MISSOULA – The man behind a controversial Facebook post is speaking out.

Toby Bridges is under investigation by Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks for pictures he posted of a dead wolf. Bridges boasted that he hit two wolves with his car.

Bridges is an avid hunter and fisherman who has come under national scrutiny for a Facebook post on the page Lobo Watch, an organization he founded in 2008.

“Lobo Watch is a web site for wolf control advocates,” Bridges said.

The Sept. 16 post references an incident on Aug. 14 when Bridges hit two wolves while driving on I-90 near the Idaho-Montana border, killing one of them.

“A mature cow elk and a calf ran out onto the interstate. I slowed down and took my foot off the gas,” Bridges said.

That’s when Bridges spotted four more wolves. He wrote in the post that he let off the brakes and hit the accelerator, because he was going to “save that calf”.

He said that he did not actually intend to hit any wolves, but rather scare them off. Bridges added that hitting the wolves was unavoidable.

“My goal was to get it up there and to either haze those wolves off those elk, or get in between those wolves and those elk. I had no intention of hitting a wolf. There was no stopping, there was no opportunity to stop, even the greatest NASCAR driver out there in the world couldn’t have prevented running into some of those wolves.”

When asked why he decided to post the picture of the dead wolf, Bridges said it was to send a message to pro-wolf advocates.

“They don’t have any problems going after us all the time. I did it, I’ll be honest with you. I did it just to aggravate them. I wanted them to do something. I wanted them to step across the line, and they did. So I got what I wanted.”

  1. CYA story, change the intent. Given who he publicly is, he likely ran into the wolves. In any case, he was observing nature, as he tells it, and decided to intervene as a God appointed elk protector, for later sports killing, still illegal. Spare me the BS: This guy illegally ran over a wolf, or two, playing nature manager.

  2. What line would that be psycho? If any one crossed the line it was you. Convicted by your own insane hatred and evidence of your crime, if you’re brought up on charges you have only yourself to blame.

  3. In my state, you are not supposed to interfere with wildlife in any way. The elk are not to be interfered with, nor the wolves. No matter how he spins this story, he should be cited or fined, IMO.

  4. “Line”? What line? Maybe he’s received threats?? He’d love nothing better, so I hope not.
The wildlife people have likely gotten an earful from the public which has no doubt trickled down to Toby. He knows he is potentially in deep doo-doo.

  5. It is actually a good thing when people of this sort express their opinions. When they do, It relays to the rest of the world just how ignorant they are.

  6. He’s the Cliven Bundy of the wolf “management” crowd of “harvesters”. And he’s totally getting off on the publicity just like Bundy.

  7. It’s ok for him to hunt the elk, but not ok for a Wolf to naturaly hunt it as food? If he’s so sick to run them down and proud of it, how does he treat other humans? He’s a sick and twisted danger.

  8. There has been a previous posting about this incident from a newspaper in Montana that was deemed “graphic”. It was to disgusting to read the vile hatred this man contains in regard to wolves. According to his prior post, he purposely tried to kill these wolves. He needs to remember that you “reap what you sow”. His hatred will definitely be his downfall.
