Animal Welfare Groups Push for Lesser ‘Threatened’ Status for Gray Wolf

A coalition of animal rights groups is pushing to downgrade federal protections for the gray wolf, hoping to compromise with opponents who want to remove protections altogether.

The groups are asking the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to list the gray wolf as threatened rather than endangered.

Wolves are currently endangered in Wisconsin and Michigan, thanks to a court ruling in late December that put the wolf back under federal protection.

But some members of Congress are pushing to change that status through legislation.

Now the Humane Society of the United States and twenty other wildlife protection groups are advocating for what they call a compromise plan to give the wolf the less-restrictive designation of ‘threatened.’

Humane Society President Wayne Pacelle says it could give managers and property owners more flexibility, even allowing lethal control in some cases.

“We feel that this petition provides a way forward that gives something meaningful to both sides.  More active management of problem wolves, but maintaining federal protections.”

Wolves are on the endangered species list in most of the lower 48, except for parts of the Northern Rockies.

A federal court ruling in December re-listed wolves as endangered in Wisconsin and Michigan, and threatened in Minnesota.

The ruling put a stop to wolf hunts in all three states.

  1. Jim…

Once again Wayne leaves out the animals!

…³active management of problem wolves²… management = murder

How about the ³something meaningful² be SAVE WOLVES¹ LIVES!

      • Sure does, Jim. I once belonged to HSUS, but no more. It is shameful, disgusting, and traitorous that these so-called “animal groups, wildlife groups” are willing to compromise away the lives of non-humans. I think we all need to let them know what we think of them. How in the hell is de-listing these wild animals helping them? Even when they are “listed” (a human category which wolves and other non-humans do not recognize), they are shot, trapped, tortured, poisoned, so “de-listing” them to threatened is meaningless drivel, but gets them more publicity and $$$. It is apparent that these sell-out groups don’t really care about the wolf, or the coyote, or the lion, or the prairie dog or….anything, but making “deals with and sleeping with”—the Enemy.
This is a war, and those who compromise with the Enemy, are Traitors.

  2. Yeah, like compromise really works. The Democrats are really good at compromising and now they have lost both the House and the Senate.

  3. Keep in mind that Wayne Pacelle organized the “Hoofin It” event in Denver to promote “humane meat.” So for four days people went to different restaurants to eat pigs, bison, cows, and sheep, a strange event for the president of an organization who is said to promote veganism and oppose slaughter. It seems he likes compromise, and I suspect he is trying to get more members for the HSUS by offering less “radical” solutions for the organization. Sounds like his new proposal for the wolves. For ranchers and hunters, though, all wolves are problems that need a lethal solution.

  4. Peh, we’ve seen what “compromising” means with ranchers (and hunters). How’s about just keeping them listed and law enforcement actually do their job properly? How’s about instead of a slapped wrist for poachers, they get the book thrown at them good and hard. FWS wants wolves delisted again, anything to get the ball rolling; they will push until it is done and the hunts are resumed in full force. This move is so transparent, if it were not so detrimental it would be laughable.
