Many moons ago I was a zookeeper at the LA Zoo for 4 years. I had read too much Gerald Durrell as a child and had some idealistic notions of zoos. I was severely disillusioned. Zoos educate people about how miserable zoos are. I was so innocently jazzed to be around all those magnificent animals but the rot set in and I saw zoos for what they are. I wish every zoo creature could go to a peaceful sanctuary, never again to be gawked at, teased or exhibited in all the resulting boredom and stress that is zoo life. Inherently wrong. Prisons, even if “comfy.” I once thought zoos could be genetic arks, full of creatures to be released to their rehabilitated ecosystems. There is very little of that going on. Perhaps the California Condor is an example, but that program is off exhibit.
