A plague is a good analogy. I have also heard the human species compared to a metastatic cancer spreading over the earth, invading and consuming everything in its path. Not very attractive comparisons for the “crown of creation.”
Probably where I heard it, but it is an apt comparison to come up with. I believe Loren Eiseley used the analogy of a fire ravaging the landscape as it passes through.

Fire on landscapes can create new growth – extinction by humans not so much.
