  1. Hey, is that the first troll?

    Some of us have noticed that the Religious Right has pulled itself together after seeing all the news about Cecil. They are appalled that there is such a “fuss” about a lion when, as Mike Huckabee asserts, there is “infanticide” in the country. I put my thoughts on a conservative site (doing some trolling myself for a change);

    Marcia Mueller, Spokane, Washington

    “Your headline reads ‘Cecil the Dead Lion Gets More Attention than Millions of Dead Babies.'”

    The lion deserves the news coverage he is getting to reveal how wealthy people can stalk and kill animals from diminishing species even in supposedly protected parks.

    The anti-abortion groups are being hyperbolic if they think they are not getting enough attention. The Planned Parenthood story was on Fox, CNN, MSNBC, and ABC, CBS, and NBC and all over the Internet. You use it as a wedge issue over and over in political campaigns. You have held recurring protests at clinics for years and passed numerous laws to try to restrict abortion. How much do you want?

    The thing is, times are changing. There are more young people now. The society is increasingly secular. Science is telling us more about evolutionary and molecular biology and genetics. We know that we share 99% of our genetic material with chimpanzees and 98% with gorillas. We are finding out how intelligent animals really are (something we would prefer not to know because it makes it more difficult to justify exploiting them) and that they are sentient creatures who do not deserve the abuse they get at human hands. The faith-based chasm separating human beings from animals and denying animals moral consideration is disappearing and none too soon.

    There is also the population issue: There are approximately 25,000 lions on this earth, and by mid-century there could be 9.6 BILLION human beings by if the current birth rate continues. That is too many for the earth to sustain. It is too many to give the creatures we share this earth with a chance. It is too many to even give many people a decent life.

    So, yes, there are people who believe a lion is as important as a fetus I guess it is another issue of choice in a diverse society. If it bothers you, quit watching the news or, better yet, try to get over it. Carping and trolling won’t turn back the clock.

  2. Reports of Jericho’s demise have been greatly exaggerated. I hope so anyway! I hope they guard him safely.

    Apparently there was another lion illegally killed from the Hwange National Park in April by another American!. Now you know part of the reason why Jimmy Kimmel choked up on national TV. Americans don’t want our reputation to be this, that we condone this type of behavior in a foreign country. We’re not all insensitive clods, trampling over the laws and culture of someone else’s country and acting superior, thinking we can buy are way in and out of everything!!!!

    New York City lit up the Empire State Building golden in Cecil’s honor, as part of a series on endangered wildlife, it’s beautiful!
