Last week, Oregon removed two more Harl Butte wolves from the pack after weeks of persistent livestock depredation. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) have been carefully monitoring the pack via a single radio-collared wolf in the pack; the two selected wolves were non-breeding members, according to ODFW.
“We have discovered in the past few weeks working out in the field with this pack, that it’s actually larger than originally expected,” ODFW spokeswoman Michelle Dennehy told KBND. “We thought there were seven wolves plus three pups and we’ve since learned that there were ten wolves with three pups, so now there are eight wolves, and after this there will be six. So, we hope that has the impact that we’re looking for.”

While ODFW has worked to keep livestock safe from the Harl Butte pack via non-lethal measures like electric fences, range riders, ranchers spending more time with livestock and wolf hazing, because this pack is so large, livestock continues to be in danger. The decision to remove problem wolves from the pack follows Oregon’s wolf management plan.
“We have a wolf plan that guides wolf management in Oregon,” says Dennehy. “Unfortunately, sometimes, wolves will kill livestock, and the Harl Butte wolf pack, which is in Wallowa county, killed livestock and that’s why we are going to kill an additional two members from this pack.”

There is no option other than to remove livestock from public lands. Future battles need to be about this. There really is no longer any room for compromise.
‘Effing humans..
and their hubris..
their misplaced superiority complexes..
and their need to murder other sentient beings…
I swear they enjoy it..
Serial killers all..
IMO
Well the only 4 legged species left on our public lands will be cows !
Speciesism is deadly !
Couldn’t agree more with your statement
Humans thinking they need their meat is killing the natural world … we are consuming everything in our sight and exploiting all species for our wants and marketed desires without consideration for the suffering and misery of those we use to satisfy our species …it’s our entitlement theory in full bloom
We are the world’s most terrifying species
We seem to live a parasitic existence without any realization of our impact upon our hosts
We are void of moralality basing our existence on domination and our right to utterly do so
I intent to give Michelle Michelle Dennehy, a piece of my mind. Even though it won’t make a difference, but I think it will have a psychological effect. Michelle.N.Dennehy@state.or.us, (503) 931-2748
Cattle and wolves are a lethal combination for the wolves. Those who insisted on the reintroduction of wolves did them no favor. The wolf may be an important part of an ecosystem, but that is in a place without human beings.
“We have discovered in the past few weeks working out in the field with this pack, that it’s actually larger than originally expected,” ODFW spokeswoman Michelle Dennehy. DOUCHE BAG!
Always a convenient excuse, isn’t there. 😦
Also, the Colville wolf hunting, but why *expanded* wolf hunting? Someone is too close to the ranchers, I think. Also, these decisions are not unanimous among the tribe.
So when all is said and done, the equivalent of at least one pack of wolves will have been killed, *in two consecutive years* instead of every other year, as was bad enough in the past.
This is an improvement?????
Where I live, our local tribe absolutely despises their tribal leadership and thinks they are extremely corrupt. So these decisions are not unanimous.
Ranchers deserve to be the target of outrage and their use of public lands needs to end.
Too often anger seems to be directed at the helpless cattle, as if they willfully planted themselves near wilderness areas.
I don’t like the war on wolves. I also don’t like the news of a dead calf with 100 wolf bites on his body and his back legs torn away.
Cattle are defenseless against wolves. They can’t run fast, and they don’t have big antlers that allow them to fight back. It is inexcusable for ranchers to put them in danger of their suffering and death and then demand the destruction of wolves.
This is just another instance of human greed and irresponsibility at work.
Especially when left to their own. What a racket, and it needs to be stopped, not kept going with the help of the F&W dept! The public needs to get a clue, if they even give a damn. Or because the U of Wa needs money for a medical school and lets donors dictate policy!!!!
You just nailed the two big issues: The public doesn’t give a damn, and money speaks with the loudest voice.
Plus putting the cattle on a difficult and rough landscape just makes it all worse. To hear these ranchers say they love their cattle is a big joke. The cattle I do not blame – I blame the ranchers and the weak government agencies, who are now liars as well as weaklings. Ranchers leave their cattle defenseless, and then are compensated with rock-bottom grazing fees, compensation for lost livestock, and the taxpayers ought to be tired of it.
We can only hope that their descendants wont’ carry on the family business, and get off the public lands. Or if they do, at least be a little more amenable to working with not against.
Consumers need to be held accountable too. Apparently this is A-okay with them.
Oh! I just realized I was thinking this article was about Washington, not Oregon. Washington, Oregon, who can tell these days.
So this spokesperson thinks that because the pack was bigger than expected (which I don’t believe for a second!) that means that makes it acceptable to kill them? Jeez they think the public is stupid.
Population control, Fish and Wildlife style. They can’t count straight and correct their answer through killing.
