Maine Season for Bobcat Hunting Starting as Deer Hunt Ends

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Maine‘s annual season for hunting wild cats is under way as the state transitions into its winter hunting seasons.

The bobcat hunt began on Friday and runs until Feb. 21. The elusive cats live all over Maine, and a handful of hunting guides specialize in pursuing them.

There is no bag or possession limit for bobcats. Other winter hunting seasons include snowshoe hare, fox and coyote.

The season for hunting deer with muzzleloaders and archery is still under way in limited parts of the state. It runs until Dec. 9.

  1. They can’t let the hunters run out of targets. So Bobcats are next (no “bag” limits), and snowshoe hares, foxes, and coyotes are after that on the doomed list. Then what?

I didn’t know there was so much frog hunting going on. The little fellows are hardly trophy material, but they provide the nimrods an opportunity to turn the living into the dead. I guess that gives them a high. Apparently frogs also give the hunters a chance to practice “primitive” bow hunting (handmade bows and stone arrows).

Incredibly, the knuckledraggers are allowed to hunt with atlatl and spears now! For all the efforts of HSUS and PETA and the work of animal advocates, we don’t seem to be keeping up with the barbaric traditions that continue or are being revived.

  2. It seems so ridiculous to see these modern goofballs trying to act like hunters of ancient times. You brought to mind that image of the spear hunter who lost his endorsement contract because of his idiotic behavior on video.

I’ve read all kinds of stuff; from ‘it’s a way of life’, to ‘people need to feed their familes’. Well, guess what – nobody today needs to hunt to feed their families – nobody. And ways of life change due to progress.

We are a violent species who in modern times is left with nothing but the primitive urge to kill and go to war. Our biology hasn’t changed with our progress.

  3. No bag limit for bobcats. It’s so nice for the hunters that hunting seasons flow from one species to another with nary a break in between….and of course there’s all the critters deemed so unimportant that you can kill them year round.
