BEULAH, Mich. — A hunter killed a red-and-white horse in northern Michigan, apparently believing it was a deer.

The owner tells TV station WPBN that the horse was found near a bait pile in Benzie County on Nov. 19, the fifth day of deer season.

Tracii Kunish-Chandler says it’s hard to imagine that the 83-year-old hunter couldn’t recognize the animal. She says the horse, named Kodi, weighed 1,100 pounds. A gunshot was heard after legal hunting hours.

WPBN says the man has been charged with careless discharge of a gun.

  1. Some hunters are so trigger-happy they’ll shoot first and play dumb later. He (presumably) will just say he thought the horse was a moose or an elk or a deer or . . .

  2. I thot it was a cayote. Its not my falt. The hors should have been wearing orang. It shuld had the word “HOARS” painted in large letter on both sides. It’s eers shudn’t have stuk up like anlerters. It shudnt bin out after dark. Do I git to keep it? Nun my frinds hav hoars trofees it wud be cule!!!

  3. Jeez – even to drive a car you have to take more frequent vision tests for older drivers. We are so gun-happy in this country we don’t restrict shooting in any way. Coyotes, pickup trucks, dogs, other humans, squirrels – all have been shot by accident. I hope the horse’s owner demands restitution in court.
