I do think the whale was trying to protect her, not because it thought she was a seal, but because she was vulnerable and the whale recognized that. Awesome for this to happen to a whale researcher! I did not know Humpbacks were known to protect other marine life from certain species of sharks.
It’s interesting, because the whale does seem to recognize the danger of the shark presents to other creatures. Just amazing. There’s so much we don’t know about animal life. Or can’t recognize because of our elevated opinion of ourselves.
