HINTON, Alta. – A western Alberta woman is urging hunters and hikers to be more aware of their surroundings after her pet husky was mistaken for a wolf and shot in the legs.

Bethany Dyck was walking with two friends on Saturday along a wooded trail near Hinton, Alta., that runs parallel to an old road. The group was on its way back, when her pooch, Meka, was playing in the forest with another dog.

“We were three women walking single file, talking pretty loudly,” Dyck said Wednesday. “The other dog that was with us had bells on and Meka was wearing a bright orange collar.”

They heard a gunshot and ran 30 metres through the bush toward the road, where they found Meka. Blood was seeping into the snow and the animal was screaming.

“It’s the worst sound I can imagine hearing coming from my pet,” Dyck recalled.

A hunter was in a clearing another 30 metres from where Meka was lying.

Hinton RCMP said in a news release that they were called to a rural area on Saturday where a husky had been shot.

“The adult male who had fired the shot was lawfully hunting in the area at the time and mistook the dog for a wolf,” the RCMP said. “The male has co-operated with the investigation.”

RCMP said no charges have been laid, but they’re asking anyone with information to contact them.

Dyck said one of her friends fashioned a tourniquet out of a sock to put on Meka’s leg and they set off for the vet. Throughout the 20-minute drive, Dyck said she was watching Meka’s chest rise and fall.

“She was very lucid the whole time. Her pupils never dilated. She was so clear and aware,” Dyck said.

The bullet went through Meka’s front right leg, hit bone, and then passed through her rear left leg.

She said the hunter stuck around and accompanied Dyck to the vet, but he told her he could only contribute $1,000 toward the bill.

Vet bills so far have totalled $4,000, Dyck said. If Meka needs surgery, which will be determined in another week or two, it could be another $4,000.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help ease some of the financial burden.

Dyck said she hopes her dog will be back to her usual self before too long.

“Meka’s happiest when she’s in the woods off leash going for a run. It’s so obvious when she’s running how happy she is,” she said.

“She has endless amounts of energy, especially when it’s -30 C. She loves people. She’s not a very affectionate dog, but she’s a really great sidekick to do any adventures.”

There was a similar case of mistaken identity near Whistler, B.C., in September. But that time, a four-year-old therapy dog that resembled a wolf died of its injuries after it was shot by a hunter.

Dyck said she hopes people will learn from her story.

“Just because you don’t hear or see them, you have to understand that there’s other people in the woods,” she said.

“So to assume that you’re by yourself on a Saturday afternoon, it’s a beautiful day outside, that there’s not going to be people walking their dogs, that’s wrong.”

She said she has nothing against hunting in general.

“But I’m not OK with them shooting my dog.”

Tamarack Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center near Saegertown has admitted four eagles with high lead toxicity levels in recent weeks. Three have died.

SAEGERTOWN — Bald eagles in Pennsylvania are protected from hunters but not from the lead in hunting ammunition.

Tamarack Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center near Saegertown typically treats two or three eagles each year for lead poisoning. But in recent weeks, the center has admitted four adult bald eagles, two of which still had the metal in their stomachs. As of Thursday, only one of the birds was alive and was in “guarded” condition.

“We’re doing our best but it is difficult for birds to come back from lead toxicity levels this high,” said Carol Holmgren, Tamarack executive director and wildlife rehabilitator.

Since 2009, the nonprofit in Crawford County has admitted 71 bald eagles. Twenty-five tested positive for lead…

Two dogs survive vicious attack by hunting dogs on hiking trail

A leisurely hike in Aina Haina went terribly wrong for one family.

An East O’ahu man said his two dogs were viciously attacked by hunting dogs.

Andres Gonzalo was hiking an Aina Haina trail with his dogs Lilikoi and Phoenix last Sunday.  He and his friends stopped on the trail to take a break.  Then he says out of nowhere, eight dogs came from behind.

“I had just enough time to hold my boxer and my friend picked up the small one. It was too late. The dogs were just grabbing the dogs by the neck and by the ears.” Said Gonzalo.

About a minute later, Gonzalo said two hunters showed up and restrained the dogs before disappearing.

Lilikoi bolted from the scene, but was found later on.  She suffered bite wounds resulting in 50 stitches.

“They had mauled her inside and out. Her legs, we didn’t know the extent of it until she went to the ER and they found all her intestines were perforated.  So they had to operate on that.” Said Miki Gonzalo, Andres’ wife.

They hope their story serves as a reminder that hunters should be held accountable for their dogs.

Island News spoke to the hunter who says he’s truly sorry for what happened.

Instead of pressing charges, Gonzalo and the owner of the hunting dogs have come to an agreement.

“We’re going to create an event. It would be part of their family and my family, my friends and their friends. We’re going to do a cookout or something just to get some funds.” Explained Gonzalo.

Those funds will help cover over $4,000 worth of vet expenses. The Gonzalo’s have also created a GoFundMe page https://www.gofundme.com/vet-funds-for-Lilikoi.

State hunting rules say hunters are responsible for all actions of their dogs when hunting legally.

Dogs should be kept under physical restraint and control at all times, except when actively pursuing game.

The Division of Forestry and Wildlife reminds hikers that they are more likely to encounter hunting dogs when hiking in areas that allow hunting.

“Vegan” US Senator Cory Booker Supports Vivisection

Roland Vincent's avatarArmory of the Revolution

Just because someone is vegan does not mean they support Animal Rights, or they even care about animals.

A case in point is US Senator Cory Booker, Democrat of New Jersey.

Sen Cory Booker may be vegan, but he takes bribes from vivisectors.

Booker pronounces himself vegan, but is bought and paid for by Big Pharma. For those unfamiliar with Big Pharmaceuticals, they include the largest vivisectors in the world.

Booker is being floated as a possible candidate in 2020. He is one of a few Clintonites who may do battle with Bernie Sanders.

Booker is attractive, loyal to Big Banks, Wall Street, and the military-industrial complex.  And is the leading mouthpiece for Big Ag in the US Senate.

He hopes to be heir to Obama’s black support.

Strategists for Booker hope to exploit his supposed veganism to gain traction with animal activists.

Sorry, Cory. Even if you do not…
