Here is your opportunity to officially weigh in on the use of helicopters and motorized vehicles by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to round up wild horses and burros on the Public Lands.

Comments can be made in January and February 2018 for wild horse herds specifically targeted for round-ups in Idaho and Montana.

Please know that Equine Advocates is completely opposed to wild horses and burros being rounded up at all! With that said, getting rid of the helicopters and other vehicles which cause terror, suffering and in many documented cases, the needless injuries and deaths of these animals, would be an important step in helping to eliminate some of…

Two White Tigers And Two Bears Rescued Thursday In Texas From Owners Housing Them Illegally – World Animal News

January 22, 2018

A white tiger and a snow-white tiger, along with two bears were seized late last week according to In-Sync Exotics, a non-profit organization that is dedicated to the rescue of neglected, abused and unwanted exotic felines.
On the organization’s Facebook page, it explained the situation and shared the good news that the tigers, named Assad and Zahra were relocated to their new home at the In-Sync Exotics’ sanctuary located in Wylie, TX. The bears were transported to Frank Buck Zoo in Gainesville, TX.

A joint operation between In-Sync Exotics, Texas Parks and Wildlife, and the local county Sheriff’s office, who reportedly seized the animals from owners who did not have the proper permits and were housing them illegally.

“Both tigers will be in mandatory quarantine for 30 days. Their quarantine area is located in the sanctuary’s on-site veterinary clinic where staff veterinarian, a veterinary…

Pumas are not Competing with Human Hunters for ‘Trophy’ Animals

Josh Gross's avatarThe Jaguar

Mountain Lion (aka Puma) by Jitze Couperus. CC BY 2.0

A recent blog post by Dr. Mark Elbroch of Panthera’s Puma Program brings up an important issue. As Dr. Elbroch states, there is an old and pervasive belief that large predators compete with human hunters for antlered deer and elk. This is one of the many factors that has led to the persecution of animals like pumas (mountain lions, cougars, Puma concolor, etc.). However, a 2017 study by Dr. Elbroch and his colleagues calls this belief into question.

In this study, as well as in his blog post, Dr. Elbroch explains that trophy hunters prefer to target large male elk and deer. These individuals have large antlers, and are therefore more impressive than the rest. There is a financial demand for large, antlered ungulates that encourages game agencies to remove any factor that might decrease their abundance –including large predators.

The World Has Never Seen an Oil Spill Like This

An oil tanker engulfed in flame
The Sanchi engulfed in flame on January 13China Daily via Reuters
Over the last two weeks, the maritime world has watched with horror as a tragedy has unfolded in the East China Sea. A massive Iranian tanker, the Sanchi, collided with a Chinese freighter carrying grain. Damaged and adrift, the tanker caught on fire, burned for more than a week, and sank. All 32 crew members are presumed dead.

Meanwhile, Chinese authorities and environmental groups have been trying to understand the environmental threat posed by the million barrels of hydrocarbons that the tanker was carrying. Because the Sanchi was not carrying crude oil, but rather condensate, a liquid by-product of natural gas and some kinds of oil production. According to Alex Hunt, a technical manager at the London-based International Tanker Owners Pollution Federation, which assists with oil spills across the world, there has never…

Poulsbo man charged in Alaska for hunting crimes

ANCHORAGE — A Poulsbo man charged earlier this month in U.S. District Court in Alaska is being accused of illegally leading a hunt for Dall sheep inside a national park and falsifying documents.

Jeffrey Harris, 44, also allegedly wrote to another man, who was also charged, that he planned to plant two dead rabbits, tainted with a substance called xylitol that is poisonous to wolves and coyotes, at a bear baiting station. Xylitol is a sweetener that is deadly to canines and birds, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Alaska.

“Let them snatch them and have a sweet treat,” Harris allegedly wrote in a Facebook message, obtained by federal investigators according to court documents. Harris was charged for the poisoning as well.

Harris was employed as a horse wrangler and maintenance worker for Ptarmigan Lake Lodge, which provided guided hunting trips at Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve, the country’s largest national park. Harris, who was not authorized to guide hunts, is accused of illegally leading in 2014 one of the hunts that resulted in the shooting of a sheep. Harris is then accused of falsifying documents to hide his involvement. The person who shot the sheep paid $4,000.

Harris is also accused of illegally trafficking a harvested blonde grizzly bear, then knowingly filing falsified reports, misstating the date the bear was shot as it was out of season, according to court documents.

Two other men were charged in connection to the case, Dale Lackner, 72, from Haines, Alaska, and Casey Richardson, 47, from Huson, Montana.

Monarch Migration

A large number of Monarch butterflies have been seen in their migratory funnel in Cape May. N.J. instead of across the Texas-Mexico border. This delayed migration is not normal, and it alarmed monarch researchers across the country. The Cape May stragglers were only a sliver of the record number of monarchs reported in the Northeast in November and December — news that sounded good initially to conservationists. But seeing butterflies so far north so late in the year suggested that few of these latecomers would reach their Mexican wintering grounds. Scientists fear that climate change is behind what they’re calling the latest monarch migration ev er recorded in the eastern United States, and they worry that rising temperatures pose a new threat to a species that saw its population hit record lows in recent years.

Known for their complex, improbable migrations, most monarchs embark on 2,000-mile journeys each…

Minnesota-based food giant General Mills has announced plans to invest in Urban Remedy, a California-based company specializing in plant-based ready-to-eat meals and cold-pressed juices and drinks.

The $17 million round of Series B funding comes via 301 Inc., the General mill investment group.

“Through retail stores, branded kiosks, and direct-to-consumer delivery, Urban Remedy excels at providing convenient access to organic products,” John Haugen, vice president and general manager of 301 Inc., said in a statement.

General Mills, isn’t new to the natural marketplace. The maker of Cheerios owns several natural channel brands including Annie’s Homegrown, Cascadian Farms, Lärabar, and Muir Glen.

Urban Remedy said the partnership works because of a synergy between the companies.

“Having a partner that’s aligned with us not…
