Wayne, what are you doing?

Wayne Pacelle is the President of the Humane Society of the United States.

I have known Wayne since the Eighties when he and I were both working with the Fund for Animals. At the Higgins Pigeon shoot in Pennsylvania I filmed Wayne running in front of hunters armed with shotguns who were blasting defenseless pigeons being released from cages. It was a brave thing to do and Wayne was a dedicated and passionate activist for the Fund for Animals, mentored by Cleveland Amory himself.

I’ve always liked and respected Wayne, even when he decided that Sea Shepherd and I were too controversial to be seen together in public, but that’s okay, we get that from lots of folks…

  1. I usually agree with Captain Watson and will continue.

The sexual harassment claims are, as far as I know, new.

Pacelle’s caving in to welfare rather than rights policies has disappointed many. Others say the rights message is too radical for the current culture and applaud’s Pacelle’s less extreme measures to improve the lives of the animals he could not save. My biggest disagreement with his decisions was the Hoofin’ It nights in Denver, offering dinners of four different species of “humane meat.” There are limits to trying to sit on both sides of the fence.

Personally, I favor PETA and its more “radical” approach, although it has attracted critics and outright hatred. And while other organizations are less extreme, claiming to avoid controversy, PETA has millions of members and offices and programs around the world.

So we’ll have to see what happens in the post-Pacelle HSUS, if he is out. Whether it’s deciding an organization’s policies or testing the limits of personal behavior, choices have consequences.

      • I read the earlier replies and WTF HSUS. Excellent. The bison at PRIME AGE at 24 to 30 months! What about the other 27 years they’re missing?

I’ve wondered about the slaughter issues with the bison too. Every time Buffalo Field Campaign sends those terrible pictures of the bloodied animals in holding pens and chutes and then the trucks, it is sickening. (I can’t think of anything I hate more than transport trucks!)

It seems like a sad betrayal when someone like Pacelle sells out to get members, funds, and approval by sacrificing some animals. Getting cozy with the “humane farmers” or the likes of Bill White doesn’t work for me.
