Pesticide Use on Crops Grown in Refuges Spikes in California, Oregon, Arkansas, Tennessee, Maryland
WASHINGTON— America’s national wildlife refuges are being doused with hundreds of thousands of pounds of dangerous agricultural pesticides every year, according to a first-of-its-kind analysis by the Center for Biological Diversity.
The Center report, No Refuge, reveals that an estimated 490,000 pounds of pesticides were dumped on commodity crops like corn, soybeans and sorghum grown in national wildlife refuges in 2016, the most recent year for which data are available. The analysis was conducted with records obtained by the Center under the Freedom of Information Act.

Farmers are allowed to grow crops in wildlife refuges, I have no idea why. Must be a sort of bargain made with the gov’t, a lot like the sweet deal the ranchers have. They were and maybe still are in some places testing GMO crops, until taken to court to stop it. Some farmers say their crops help feed wildlife. 😦 But don’t think it is a current thing – this has been going on for decades.
I believe the systemic herbicide glyphosate is/has been used, and has created super-weeds resistant to it – so now of course even more chemicals must be used. 😦
That’s a prime example of humans’ time here on Earth–one mistake leads to a lifetime of them…
I read this on Garry Rogers blog and I cannot understand why crops are allowed to be grown in wildlife refuges. Given that they are, wouldn’t it be logical to have organically grown only. But no, toxic pesticides must be sprayed in wildlife refuges. Every day with new information about our ongoing destruction of the environment and wildlife, I feel like I have gone thru the looking glass….
