A Florida high school principal said he regrets using live animals including a caged tiger as part of a jungle-themed prom.

The theme of the prom at Miami’s Christopher Columbus High School was “Welcome to the Jungle,” reports an ABC affiliate covering south Florida.

The prom, hosted at a hotel near Miami International Airport, featured several animals including a caged tiger, a lemur, two macaws and an African fennec fox.

Details of the wild animals’ appearance were sparked in part by a Facebook post from Mari-Cris Castellanos, whose brother attends the school. Her post included videos of the tiger pacing around the cage during prom.

“This poor tiger was used as an EXOTIC amusement for the mindless teenagers who were present,” she wrote. “It is not…

  1. This was one of the worst thing I had ever heard on the news – the tiger was pacing in his cage and was very nervous. Just imagine the loud music and how it must have affected the tiger.
What ever possessed the high school to approve it? There needs to be better laws.

Also, where are the protesters when you need them? Christopher Columbus High School sounds like it needs one of their wet blankets thrown over the sign, or have it taken down and renamed? Must not be politically advantageous enough?

  2. As I keep saying, you can’t fix stupid. Whoever thought this was a good idea doesn’t belong in the educational system.

And speaking of stupid, I was channel surfing for a few minutes this afternoon and came upon a show on FOX called THE FIVE. They were just discussing this story, and the first three thought it was a great idea for a fun night. Never mind the tiger pacing frantically in a tiny cage with all the loud music and commotion. I think someone mentioned a wolf. I can only imagine what a treat prom night must have been for him/her. One of the five stressed that if the people were safe, that was the main issue.

They were so astonishingly clueless about the affect on the animals that it was hard to believe. I don’t know what the last two thought, but I doubt if it was much different.

  3. I know what you mean – even on the National News, the ABC anchorperson (I prefer the term ‘News Reader’) had too light-hearted a tone, as if they thought it was something not deserving of reporting, ha-ha. >:(.

They said ‘the facility that provided the tiger and other wildlife was licensed’. We know that the bar is set very low for these types of licensed facilities many times. That tiger looked very stressed. It reminds me of some idiot who approved a party at a zoo, where the loud music and flashing lights were bad enough you’d think, but somebody had the bright idea to give the dolphins heroin, and naturally the dolphins were killed by it. Just kids having fun I guess:
