Illinois law enforcement is trying to trick us into believing that if marijuana is legalized, they will be forced to euthanize hundreds of drug sniffing dogs. But it’s just a red herring.
Sign the petition to tell Illinois law enforcement to end this false dichotomy and promise not to euthanize any dogs when marijuana is legalized here.
Most drug sniffing dogs are trained to sniff out everything from cocaine to cannabis to heroine, but they are not trained to identify which one they’ve found. That means that if marijuana is legalized in Illinois (go here if you want it to be), the dogs would need to be retrained or retired. The other 9 states in the nation that have legal recreational cannabis use have done just that – retrained…

I’m not a big fan of marijuana legalization; I can take it or leave it, it’s not on my priority list at all. But there are other alternatives to killing them if they don’t need as many in the even of legalization, such as finding homes for them. I just hope that people will care enough about the dogs, or just support their own self-interest (no matter how trivial) and allow something like this to go forward.
I do remember something that made me chuckle (always ironically). The last election (for President) when pot legalization was on the ballot in our state, I don’t think I saw so many young people at the voting booths in my life. 😉
Funny thing about that. I think it’s called self-interest and why people aren’t taking to the streets over animal abuse.
Thanks for clearing that up…
This also makes you wonder about the police. They shoot dogs and other animals without what seems to be good reasons. Some have left their K9’s to die in overheated cars. And now they threaten to kill their working companions if a law they don’t like is passed. They’re looking pretty bad to me.
It’s unusual to me – because many times a great bond is formed with the service dogs, such as in the military and the police. I don’t like the use of animals as ‘slaves’ and especially if they are discarded without a thought. The only saving grace about it is that bond that many times is formed, and sometimes the soldier or police’person’ will adopt them.
It’s also very misleading – there will always be drug smuggling of some sort, so it’s just nasty to come out and say something like this. States want the revenue from legal marijuana, and are going to tax the crap out of it, and there are those who wont want to pay tax on it.
But the dogs can take early retirement, or put in for a transfer to a new precinct? 😉
