- Submitted / Dept. of Natural Resources New products allow hunters to remain attached to the tree while climbing into and descending from ladder or hang-on treestands.
Despite a concerted effort by the Alabama Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries (WFF) Division’s Hunter Safety Program, Alabama deer hunters are still falling out of treestands in disturbing numbers.
Plus, there has been one firearms fatality where the cardinal rule of unloading your firearm before exiting your deer stand was not followed.

Tree stand accidents–Captain Watson’s favorite event.
If a hunter falls out of a tree stand, and no one is there to hear, is it still Obama’s, Hillary’s oe wolves’ fault?
The wolves. The wolves are always to blame. They did it.
I have commented on these tree-stand accidents before. If that hunter had not been wearing a so-called “safety harness,” he would not have suffered a broken nose. Why have a harness slam your body against a tree, when you can easily do a flip to land safely on your feet if not tethered to a tree? Always, always, set the stand above 27 feet, giving you time to think out the landing, and which direction to flip to a safe landing. Examining a tree stand on the ground is sort of like taking a vacation by buying postcards–it’s far from reality. The only way to know your stand is safe is to install it, climb in, and then give it an inspection. Also, loading & unloading can be tricky while in a tree stand. The best hunters load & unload at home. And they know that futzing with a safety will probably result in that trophy buck getting away. You know what you gotta do. Hunting accidents are what happens to the other guys. You’re a master of the realm, and you make the rules, not follow them like a pansy that comes home empty-handed to your hungry family. (^^^)
