Indiana seeks to solve hunting decline with women, youth

By Associated Press |

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Indiana officials are looking for ways to encourage more women and youth to become game hunters as the state continues to issue a declining number of hunting licenses.

The Indianapolis Star reports that the state’s wildlife preservation programs rely on the sale of hunting licenses as a main source of funding. So Indiana’s decline in hunting for the past decade is also threatening conservation efforts.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says Indiana sold more than 552,100 hunting licenses, tags and permits in 2006, but the number was down to about 426,300 in 2016.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources is hoping to solve the problem by launching new programs to reach groups not typically associated with hunting. One program is teaching students archery in schools.

AR Hunter Donations

>

FORREST CITY, Ark. (WREG) — Just before Christmas, an 8-year-old boy lost all his hunting gear to thieves, and he’s not finding out that good people outweigh the bad in the world.

Jayce Collum was devastated when his gear was stolen in December, but now people have been sending him hunting gear to replace his that was stolen.

“Buckmaster sent a whole group of things—clothes, hats, t-shirts, hoodies—you know, just to get him started back,” his mother Kristen Shepherd said.

The smile on Collum’s face looking at all his new gear says it all. The 8-year-old was left paralyzed after a truck crash in 2015, and he wondered how he would ever go deer hunting again with his gear stolen.

“Disappointed, mad and all that,” Collum said about losing his gear.

A well-known north country hunting guide is accused of violating the terms of his federal probation.

Bill Saiff III pleaded guilty in 2017 to guiding waterfowl hunts over baited ponds, which led to the killing of protected birds, a violation of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Saiff was fined, and as part of his punishment, he was banned from hunting activities until January 1st. Officials say Saiff didn’t honor that probationary period.

Saiff is once again accused of being involved in bird bating and guided hunting activities.

Saiff’s lawyer, David Antonucci, tells 7News, “We don’t believe his actions violated the terms of his probation.”

For now, a judge has placed Saiff under a 7 p.m. To 7 a.m. curfew.

The case is due back in court in February.

At yesterday’s Centralized Court at the Clearfield County Jail, Frank M. Ferguson, 48, of Altoona, waived his right to a preliminary hearing in front of District Judge Jerome Nevling.

Ferguson allegedly shot a member of his hunting party during bear season in Cooper Township in November. He has been charged by North Central division of the state Game Commission with shoot at/kill/injure a human while hunting — a misdemeanor of the second degree; and unlawful shooting on/across highway — a summary offense of the fourth degree.

According to the criminal complaint, on Saturday, Nov. 17 around 7 a.m., two game commission wardens were patrolling the area for the opening day of bear season at the intersection of state Route 53 and Cooper Township Road within Cooper Township alongside a large unharvested corn field.

As the wardens rounded the turn toward the back side of the corn…

https://newyork.cbslocal.com/2019/01/03/hunter-caught-with-illegal-deer-blames-wife/

BALDWIN, Mich. (CBS Local) — A Michigan hunter who got caught with an illegal deer blames his wife for his actions.

“The honest-to-God truth is that my wife wants deer meat and if I come home without any she’ll get really mad at me,” the hunter told Conservation Officer Josiah Killingbeck.

Killingbeck told the Cadillac News he made contact with the suspect after receiving a tip that a hunter had shot a spike horn buck near Baldwin in violation of antler point restrictions imposed to protect young deer in Lake County.

At first, the suspect denied that any deer had been killed. Then he tried to explain away the physical evidence. Killingbeck said he also observed unused deer tags in the man’s wallet.

When Killingbeck told the hunter a witness saw him shoot the deer, “the suspect hung his head and admitted to…
