Hunters, Trappers Take Aim At Limiting Montana’s Wolf Population

A meeting about Montana’s wolf population turned testy Wednesday night in Kalispell.

At one point, a man stood up amidst the sea of green camo, flannel and down and called out that he’s not advocating that everybody go out and buy poison. But, “If we have to kiss heiny to the Senate or whoever it is and get it done legislatively, maybe that’s what we ought to do.”

Wednesday’s was the third meeting in recent months hosted by a trio of hunting and trapping groups — Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Montana Sportsmen for Fish and Wildlife and the Idaho-based Foundation for Wildlife Management — concerned that carnivores, and especially wolves, are depleting elk and deer in western Montana.

  1. Stubborn, wilful ignorance, you see it in republicans, Trump, hunters, trappers, ranchers. They believe something that is not true, not supported by science, facts, empirical evidence, logic. They believe, that is the clue, it is a belief based way of thinking, fine when confined to religion, but invalid in Caesars’ world. They repeat a lie, a mythology, a folklorean tale enough that it becomes fact, a reality for them.

As applied to wolves: Wolves are not decimating elk or stock or deer.

Hunter ass-umption: We have to kill more wolves and other predators so we will have more elk for us to kill. Hunters have pushed that myth since before regulated hunting, not scientifically supported ass-umption. They also scapegoat other predators. Hunters kill 7-8 times more elk in wolf territory than wolves. Elk kill by hunters is up since wolf return in MT and WY, way up, in Montana almost doubled, and at target numbers or above even in wolf country.

  2. They’ve had control of this since 2011, and still they are bitching about the number of wolves. I am so sorry that things devolved this way. The article says they want to get the population down to an unhealthy number, and that has been their goal since day 1.

Stupid to ever let them near wolves. Thanks a lot, Tester.

  3. Who stood up and called for poisoning? I’ll bet it was Tobey Bridges, we haven’t heard from him in awhile. One of the rogue’s gallery.
