Acts of compassion shouldn’t land you in jail, yet Catherine McCartney has beensentenced to 15 days in jail after letting a trapped bear cub loose.
New Jersey state officials set a trap in a condo complex after an adult bear frightened some residents, but it was a cub who got caught in the trap. Hearing the cub’s cries, McCartney opened the trap to reunite the child with its mom, technically violating some laws for tampering with government property.
By the state’s own admission, had a government official gotten to the trap first, they probably would have also let the cub free since he was not the intended target. It appears that the judge chose to extend a harsh sentence anyway since McCartney has been arrested in the past for protesting bear hunters.
Acts of civil disobedience aimed at protecting vulnerable bears should not put her behind bars, though. Save the jail time for the people who are cruel to animals instead!
Join former U.S. Senator Robert Torricelli in calling on NJ Governor Phil Murphy to pardon McCartney from serving jail time, as the punishment most definitely does not fit the “crime”/act of kindness.

The tiny infant cubs up in Yreka were sweet, but it is sad that their mother is missing, possibly due to a selfish poacher. The wildlife rehab people say how much like human infants they are.

This woman should be pardoned. This innocent cub could have died. She is a hero. The judge and The laws should focus on sentencing dog fighters and other animal abusers to harsher punishments who always get a slap on the wrist. My respect and gratitude goes to this wonderful woman with compassion for this lil cub. I’m sure it was heartbreaking to hear his cries for momma.
These traps should be illegal. They are painful, harmful and can cause permanent damage to any living creature that gets stuck in them. Moreover it could of been somebody’s dog or kid that got trapped in it. There are now bears some mothers with cubs that are now missing limbs and they’re the lucky ones.
She did the right humane thing and shouldn’t be punished,

I agree with freeing the cub. If Mama Bear needs to be relocated there are times of the year to do this. Or mama and Cubs can and should be left alone

This country is backwards. You arrest someone who is trying to do something kind..which we certainly need more of and drug dealers and career criminals are out and about as they have no fear of the system as they seem to get a good lawyer and get away with their crimes.

Are you serious about this court action, freeing a cub from a trap puts someone in jail or even a fine!!! I don’t care if it was a male or female no animal should be traumatised from a bear trap, they are cruel.

She was fined and freed. This woman is not in jail now. This happened in almost a year ago.
To put her in prison for saving an animal in pain is fucking insane and shows wot bollocks the justice system is. This is what is needed by Brave, Determined folks, who realize we are in Very Dark Times now, and it is simply not enough just to comment, carry signs. Those who have gone before us –who even gave their lives– knew that this is the very Life Support System, Total Extinction, we are talking about. This is not going to be Nice and Polite. Whatever one does, it must be done for those who cannot speak, get out of traps, dodge the bullet or arrow, for the trees, oceans, air.
Not everyone can do what this woman did. But, we can decide what to do when our conscience says “this is enough, no more.”
