Missouri’s first Elk Hunting Season begins today for the first time ever.

This season will run from December 12-20, and will be firearm exclusive. An archery season is scheduled for October 17-25.

Only five permit holders will be able to bag the massive deer species this year. One is for qualifying area landowners, and four are for the general public.

Elk were reintroduced to the state after being hunted to extinction in the 19thcentury.

The new elk hunting season will be used to control their population and manage herd location.
