California is home to two new gray wolves, and it appears they’re settling down together in Siskiyou County.
After making his way to Siskiyou in November of 2020, the Oregon wolf known as OR-85 has connected with anotherwolf that biologists believe is most likely a female.
To determine the mystery wolf’s sex and possibly which pack she descended from, biologists are hard at work collecting samples of the wolf’s feces, urine and fur to be genetically tested.
This unglamorous job lands in the lap of Kent Laudon, California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s wolf specialist. He’s an expert in the state’s small population of wolves, which are making a slow comeback to a state they once called home. He works to bridge the concerns of wildlife conservationists with those of ranchers who worry wolves will endanger their livelihoods.https://65ee1cb96bf82fc6dae1b38a9522589c.safeframe.googlesyndication.com/safeframe/1-0-37/html/container.html

WASHINGTON (Sinclair Broadcast Group) —Concerns about the emergence of more infectious strains of thecoronavirusovershadowed the good news from Johnson & Johnson that it had completed the third phase clinical trial of its single-dose vaccine.
On Friday, Johnson & Johnson and Janssen Pharmaceuticals reported their vaccine was 72% effective among trial participants in the United States. But that efficacy went down to 57% in a South Africa trial, where the dominant strain of the virus is more transmissible and apparently…
Members of the Kansas Wildlife, Parks and Tourism Commission spent much of their monthly meeting Jan. 14 discussing an influx of out-of-state hunters in public waterfowl hunting areas in Kansas.
The discussionbegan with public comment from Nicholas Boehm, from the Kansas City area, who expressed concerns about out-of-state residents flooding into the state. Other public commenters later echoed his comments.
“This year in particular, myself and friends who hunt public lands for waterfowl across the state have noticed a great increase in hunting pressure on public areas, a lot of it coming from out-of-state hunters based on, of course anecdotally, license plates and just conversations at boat ramps,” Boehm said. “I feel, at least, the volume of hunters, especially nonresidents during the week, has reduced the hunting quality substantially.”https://a051e3c31d7f99d215802bf078510359.safeframe.googlesyndication.com/safeframe/1-0-37/html/container.html

A series of bills that would change Montana’s trapping requirements and expand opportunities to kill wolves are making their way through the legislature.
The legislation ranges from a bill that would make trapping education mandatory for some Montana residents to a bill draft that would permit the killing of wolves without a license year-round.
On Thursday, the House Fish, Wildlife and Parks Committee held a hearing onHouse Bill 225, which is sponsored by Rep. Paul Fielder, R-Thompson Falls. The bill would lengthen Montana’s wolf trapping season by a month. It would also allow the Montana Fish and Wildlife Commission to adjust wolf trapping season dates in different wolf management units based on…

Bird flu or Avian Influenza is highly contagious viral disease caused by Influenza Type A viruses which generally affects poultry birds such as chickens and turkeys. Many states have confirmed bird flu, and many people are shying away from eating chicken or eggs.
Bird flu is transmitted to humans through contact with infected bird feces, nasal secretions, or secretions from the mouth or eyes. Consuming properly cooked poultry or eggs doesn’t transmit the bird flu, but eggs should never be served runny. But if you are still wary, there are many vegetarian sources of protein you can toy with.
Though all the nonveg options have all 9 essential amino acids present, but one can also get the required amount of proteins from veg sources. You would have to do some mix and match to complete your daily quota. Here are some ideas:
These are rich in vitamins E, B6, niacin and folate; and they provide minerals such as magnesium, zinc, plant iron, calcium, copper, selenium, phosphorus and potassium, dietary fiber.
They are also high in monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats, low in saturated fat. They are also good sources of dietary protein, hence a good alternative to animal proteins. Some nuts are also high in amino acid arginine, which keeps blood vessels functioning smooth.
Start your day with a handful of nuts for optimal nutrient intake.
2. Do Not Miss Out On The Legumes and Pulses –
These are rich in protein, folate, fiber (both insoluble and soluble), iron, phosphorus, polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acids including linoleic and oleic acids
Legumes contain several components that, when eaten as part of a balanced plant-rich diet, may help prevent the development of various chronic conditions like CVD, obesity and poor digestive health. If you are having dal, it is a good idea to combine it with rice or brown rice for your amino acid intake.

3. Soya is a good idea too
Its high protein content, vitamins, minerals and insoluble fibre make soya a credible superfood. Soya bean has been transformed into a number of popular soya-based foods including:
Miso – a fermented soya bean paste that is used as a flavouring, it is popular in Asian cuisine. It is a good source of many minerals and vitamins.
Tempeh – is an Indonesian specialty typically made by cooking and dehulling soya beans and forming a textured, solid ‘cake’. It is a very good source of protein, B vitamins and minerals.
Tofu – also known as bean curd is made from soya milk by coagulating the soya proteins with calcium or magnesium salts. The whey is discarded, and the curds are processed. It is an excellent source of iron and calcium and a good source of protein. If you are switching to veganism, tofu could work as a substitute for paneer.
Quinoa seeds are gluten-free and contain all the nine essential amino acids. Yes, you heard us. 1 cup of cooked Quinoa seeds contains about 8 grams of protein, and the pseudo-cereal is also super versatile. You can use it to make quinoa pulao, quinoa biryani, upma et al.
“Chicken production remained steady in 2020, and as long as people are sitting around watching TV and maybe drinking a beer, wings will remain in the game,” National Chicken Council spokesman Tom Super said in a statement on the news.
The big game pitting the Kansas City Chiefs against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is an especially important food holiday this year, as fans stay home and crave comfort foods, perhaps delivered from favorite bars and restaurants.
What’s more, total chicken wing sales at supermarkets during the pandemic totaled nearly $3 billion, up 10.3% from last year. Possibly driven by the air fryer craze, sales of in-store frozen wings shot up 37.2%, according to the latest statistics from Information Resources Inc.
More fast-food chains are catering to the demand with Super Bowl focused food promotions, too. Buffalo Wild Wings has announced it would serve free wings if the big game goes into overtime, while Applebee’s has promised to give away 1.6 million boneless chicken wings (at 40 wings per order) to anyone who orders $40 worth of delivery or take out.
“Restaurants like wing joints and pizza places were built around takeout and delivery, so they didn’t have to change their business model that much during the pandemic. Wings travel well and hold up during delivery conditions,” Super said.
Indeed, despite the challenges restaurants faced during nationwide shutdowns and indoor dining closures, restaurants serving chicken wings, in particular, saw 7% growth in 2020 compared with 2019, despite an 11% dip in indoor dining over the same period, according to data from market research firm NPD Group.
“There is no evidence of illegal activity thus far as elephant tusks were found intact,” the Environment Ministry said on Facebook on Friday. When elephants are poached, their tusks are removed and the ivory sold illegally.
Botswana’s 135,000 elephants, the most in any one nation, have become a political issue because farmers say they destroy their crops and occasionally trample people. Yet the animals are key to the country’s tourism industry, which was worth some $2 billion a year before the coronavirus pandemic.
