Cutting emissions more urgent than ever, say scientists, with forest producing more than a billion tonnes of carbon dioxide a year

The study found fires produced about 1.5bn tonnes of CO2 a year, with forest growth removing 0.5bn tonnes. The 1bn tonnes left in the atmosphere is equivalent to the annual emissions of Japan.Photograph: Carl de Souza/AFP/Getty Images

TheAmazon rainforestis now emitting more carbon dioxide than it is able to absorb, scientists have confirmed for the first time.

The emissions amount to a billion tonnes of carbon dioxide a year, according to a study. The giant forest had previously been a carbon sink, absorbing the emissions driving the climate crisis, but is now causing its acceleration, researchers said.

Most of the emissions are caused by fires, many deliberately set to clear land forbeefandsoy…

  1. Each year, more, hotter forest fires, less & less bees, birds and other non-human life. We have been forewarned for years, but each new warning comes with “oh, but we can have more “green this & that” –and now our species is enamored with the idea of storing the increasing carbon we are emitting by burying it, storing it underground.” Never mind that each new techno fix corporations & some scientists come up with will not Heal the Planet. Couple this with the hoards of unvaccinated folks causing viral increases everywhere…hang on to your seats folks–even ultra rich Bezos will have to return to Earth. Reality is upon us, and it doesn’t look good.
Front page yesterday in local paper: “New Mexico is drying up.” Not much water left in any of the man-made reservoirs, streams, rivers not flowing.
I have a Xeric garden for pollinators. Two lovely bees at my Spirea bushes this year, only 2 hummers–a few years ago there would have been scores. No butterflies. It is coming fast, isn’t it?
