We’ve known about China’s massive nuclear expansion for some time now. Last year, Admiral Charles Richard, commander of U.S. Strategic Command, testified that we are on a trajectory to face two nuclear peers – Russia and China – for the first time in its history.

But things have changed. This week, Richardtestifiedthat this three-party nuclear-peer reality has already arrived.

This constitutes a significant shift in threat environment. Richard said the nuclear forces we have today are“the absolute minimum”and that the Pentagon will need to make“immediate and significant”changes to our nuclear posture.

Disarmament advocates greeted his statement withskepticism, but Richard is right. There is no time to waste…

  1. While this present regional war wages, not only are innocent humans suffering, but there are zoos and other captive animal operations everywhere in this world. As we speak, the Kyiv Zoo animals and their brave, dedicated caretakers are possibly facing bombs–and they are running out of food, water, etc. Can we have Total Disarmament? I so wish it. But, as Climate Changes worsen, the world’s countries will be thrown into further turmoil–and war. If this current conflict does not result in Nuclear War, I fear it will still happen sooner or later.

  2. Now that the nuclear Pandora’s box has been opened, we can see that it was never a good idea. There’s still no good way to dispose of the waste even at best, and at worst – it has brought the world to its knees in fear of a dictator.

  3. Yes, and in case most people in this country do not know: just some 30 miles from Santa Fe, NM., in Los Alamos (the horrible birth place of the making of Nukes), we have continuous issues with radioactive “leaks” from so-called nuclear material storage. This has been going on for years. Now, there are plans to further equip ($$$$$) Los Alamos to become the Plutonium Capitol of the world. As this current crises continues, people need to realize that this place up there in the Jemez Mts., is slated to become the major facility to build the “pits” for bigger nukes. D-Martin Heinrich of N.M., is the darling of this proposal–which will most likely get done. The word “Pit” is used so the whole terrible thing does not sound so bad, but these are actually “bombs” the strength of which were exploded upon Japan, after being tested here in Southern NM many years ago. The Los Alamos Study Group and Nuke Watch are trying to stop this–but there are millions of dollars being poured into this here.
