WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. – A backyard flock in Whatcom County has been infected with the deadly bird flu.
The Washington State Department of Agriculture says the owners reported an abnormal number of deaths within their flock on Thursday, May 12th.
Tests confirmed an infection with the H5N1 avian influenza.
It’s one of eight flocks infected in six counties over the past few weeks.
Bird owners are advised to keep their flocks from contacting wild birds and to report any illnesses to the department’s sick bird hotline.
The department is also urging bird owners to skip fairs and exhibitions to help tamp down the spread of the disease.
A spokesperson says they hope those activities can return to normal by the end of June.
