Toni Okamoto started Plant-Based on a Budget to show people how affordable plant-based eating can be.

Toni Okamoto

Toni Okamoto became overwhelmed with frustration after she watched family members suffer severe health consequences from the food they ate.

Her aunt suffered multiple amputations from Type 2 diabetes prior to dying, and her grandfather had multiple heart attacks before dying in a bypass surgery.

She also saw how their financial situations limited the choices they could make regarding their food.

So, she decided to do something.

“That’s how I started Plant-Based on a Budget — I was on a limited income with limited resources to eat healthy-ish, and I started compiling those recipes for my family to benefit and saw very quickly how many people wanted to eat healthier but didn’t know where to begin,” she said.

Catch up on the developing stories making headlines.

A 34-year-old man is recovering from injuries sustained at Yellowstone National Park after he was charged at and brutally gored by a bison when he and his family got too close to the animal.

The incident occurred near Giant Geyser at Old Faithful on Monday when the unidentified man from Colorado Springs, Colorado, was walking with his family on a boardwalk at Yellowstone National Park when a bull bison began charging at them, according to a press release issued by the park.

“Family members did not leave the area, and the bull bison continued to charge and gored the male,” the statement from Yellowstone continued. “The male sustained an injury to his arm and was transported by ambulance to the Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.”MORE: Woman, 72, gored multiple times by bison after getting too close taking pictures

It is unclear whether the family had gotten too close to the animal or if the attack was unprovoked but Yellowstone officials confirmed that the incident remains under investigation and did not disclose any further information on the man’s condition.

Yellowstone warned that park regulations mandate people stay at least 25 yards away from bison at all times because they are unpredictable animals and can run three times faster than humans can.

“This is the second reported incident in 2022 of a visitor getting too close to the animal and the bison responding to the perceived threat by goring the individual,” said Yellowstone National Park.

That incident occurred just last month on May 30 when a 25-year-old woman from Grove City, Ohio, approached a bison within 10 feet near Black Sand Basin, located just north of Old Faithful at Yellowstone, causing the animal to charge at her. The victim was subsequently gored by the bison and tossed 10 feet into the air before she was immediately taken to the hospital for treatment, according to a statement from Yellowstone National Park released at the time of the incident.MORE: Girl, 3, runs off trail and falls into scalding water at Yellowstone National Park

“Yellowstone’s scenic wonders are sure to take your breath away: don’t let them take your life,” warns Yellowstone National Park on its page online for park safety. Some of the rules highlighted by the park include never approach wildlife, stay on boardwalks and trails in thermal areas, and never feed wildlife.

“Bison have injured more people in Yellowstone than any other animal,” says the park. “Always stay at least 25 yards (23 m) away from bison.”

Greta, Greenpeace and flying in to the dairy farm

The Boss and Dave Grohl. Should we “carbon shame” Macca over his special guests?

With a giant Greenpeace banner strewn across the stage, Paul McCartney delightedly introduced his Saturday night special guests and gave anecdotes on their short notice air flights. Dave Grohl and Bruce Springsteen were only onstage for a couple of songs in The Beatles’ headliner set; that this passes with so little commentary only shows how weak and toothless the drive to reduce anthropogenic climate change really is. Aviation is of course understood to be a huge emitter of greenhouse gases.

Grohl explained. “Well I started on Wednesday, then the flight got cancelled, back to the airport Thursday and then the flight got cancelled, but I swear I would never miss being on stage with you right now.”

Sir Paul enthused. “These two guys flew in especially for this tonight.”

As with David Attenborough in 2019, earlier in the day Greta Thunberg had been wheeled out for a little eco-conscience slot, as always warning the audience of the perils that are due if we don’t mend our ways. Then it was back on with the entertainment as a various assortment of international artists performed to an international audience. No more parties were pooped nor personal desires challenged. Flying is just an accepted and aspirational norm for the heaving billions.

Greta getting the masses to pay lip service to climate change

McCartney is no stranger to climate activism himself, urging the Climate Conference attendees to adopt plant-based diet treaties. A fair point given that outside of our choices around reproduction (each new human multiplies our impacts) switching to a plant-based diet is the most effective personal choice.

Which leads us to the site itself, Glastonbury takes place on the acreage of Michael Eavis, a dairy farmer. The land is used for cow farming the rest of the year and farming cows is time and again shown to be an inefficient usage of land, calories and a key source of food based emissions alongside meat.

Eavis releases feelgood videos to Youtube about the happy cows and where they go to during the festival. Unsurprisingly he doesn’t suggest the slaughterhouse or separation of mother and calf as possible outcomes.

The kids aren’t alright. Let the Glasto cleanup begin…

One musical artist has been brave enough to point out the hypocritical and harmful industry that takes place at good ol’ ‘Glasto’. Morrissey blew the whistle on his being blocked from performing The Smiths track Meat Is Murder with its video of standard practice on the big screen. He went on to state that milk production is even more cruel than meat and highlight how environmentally damaging it is.

“In 2011, I played Glastonbury and attempted to sing the song Meat Is Murder.

“Behind me, a screen that usually shows the many evils of factory farming remained blank.

“Dairy cows are not allowed to not be in lactation because then their milk production decreases and they do not produce enough milk to justify the cost of their board and lodgings. Therefore, cows are repeatedly raped and raped and raped … which Michael Eavis presumably thinks is a great way to make sentient beings happy.”

“Does Michael Eavis at his Glastonbury Farm accommodate any cows at all that do not yield money his way? I doubt it. Off with their heads!

Does Michael Eavis care about the insane environmental damage caused by dairy farming? I doubt it. To hell with the environment! People who do not care about animal rights usually do not care about human rights. It naturally follows.”

I saw only the one social media poster draw attention to McCartney’s oh-so casual talk of flying in his cameo guests. A response came in saying that this constituted “carbon shaming”. I am familiar with many of the “shaming” tropes but this one was new to me. I replied that we should be so lucky to shame anyone and that a whole lot of “carbon shaming” is going to be required if the ambitious and non-binding net zero targets are ever going to be met,

Nearly 400 dogs rescued from slaughter as Chinese activists continue fighting

A Humane World Kitty Block’s Blog
infamous Yulin ‘festival’Calendar Icon June 29, 2022A dog rescued from a dog meat truck headed for Yulin is now receiving care at HSI’s partner shelter in north China, run by Vshine, a local animal welfare group. VshineEarlier this month we told you about Lucky, a dog saved moments before slaughter in Yulin, as the city began preparing for its infamous lychee and dog meat “festival” later in June. Since Lucky’s rescue, local activists have been vigilant in their determination to end this event for good.In the days and nights leading up to the summer solstice, activists stayed awake at all hours to patrol highways for trucks transporting dogs into the city for slaughter. With their help, police in Xi’an intercepted a truck bound for Yulin and confiscated all 386 dogs, many of whom were stolen pets still wearing collars. Activists praised the police for their swift response; if all law enforcement agencies took this zero-tolerance approach, China’s dog meat trade would come to an end.The term “festival” is a misnomer because there is actually very little about this week in June that would be recognizable as festivities. The event was originally marketed as a festival when it was launched in 2010 by dog meat traders. After years of opposition by Chinese animal advocates, supported by global voices such as Humane Society International, the event has been vastly reduced, and now it would be more accurate to describe it as a dinner party for some locals during which dog meat is eaten in greater volume, and visitors from other cities arrive in the city for the alleged local “specialty.”Local animal groups report that business at this year’s event was once again slow. While dog meat was still sold at the markets, the number of diners inside local restaurants was noticeably smaller. Although Yulin has become globally famous for all the wrong reasons, the spotlight on this cruelty often overshadows the fact that dogs and cats are killed for meat in Yulin and other cities in the Guangxi region and beyond all year round. Long after the world’s media have moved on from Yulin in June, this brutal trade, though extremely small in view of China’s gigantic economy, continues to be responsible for the suffering and death of millions of dogs across China every year.Transport cages such as these are typically used to bring dogs to the slaughterhouses in Yulin. HSIEvery year, we highlight the rescue of dogs and cats who, thanks to the diligence of local activists, are saved and brought to shelters to recover and begin new lives as adoptable pets. While we hope that this dog and cat cruelty will come to an end in Yulin and across China, it is vital to amplify the voices and efforts of all those Chinese advocates calling for change. The activists whose actions changed the lives of 386 dogs on the eve of the Yulin event, deserve our praise and admiration. All 386 dogs were handed over to the activists on June 21. While most were taken in by local shelters, 80 were accepted to animal welfare group Vshine’s shelter in north China, which is supported by Humane Society International. The dogs are now receiving much-needed veterinary care as well as nutritious food and time to heal, before being offered for local adoption when they fully recover. These are the silver linings that keep us fighting this cruel trade—but we know that no rescue can replace the urgent need to ban the dog meat trade. This is why other elements of this year’s Yulin event stand out as positive marks of progress:Our partner group activists who were stationed in several sections of the highways leading to Guangxi reported that most of the time they saw no dog trucks on the highway. The only one they saw was the truck that was successfully intercepted in Shaanxi, many miles away. This suggests a reduction in the volume of dog trafficking.Activists on the ground had expected to see a surge in dog slaughter and dog meat sales because 2022 was the first year since the COVID-19 pandemic began that China had lifted most of the restrictions on live animal transport across provinces. Instead, business at Yulin’s dog meat restaurants was surprisingly slow. From early June, our partner group mobilized concerned citizens from across China to urge through hundreds of phone calls different provincial offices urging a stop to the slaughter and the dog meat trade. This level of citizen mobilization shows the strength of opposition against the cruelty.Although much more needs to be done, the Yulin authorities have heard domestic and international criticism and have been restricting many of the usual practices of the traders.Dog meat is not part of China’s mainstream food culture. It is not a common food choice of citizens of Yulin, or indeed most of China, but is pushed out to consumers at a steady pace by those who can profit from it. Across China, there is significant opposition to the dog meat trade. And even the authorities do not see dogs as food. In 2020, China’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs made an official statement that dogs are companion animals and not “livestock” for eating. The cities of Shenzhen and Zhuhai in south China led the country in outlawing dog meat trade through local legislation, which we hope other cities will replicate in future.Persistence is so much a part of the work we do to make the world a more humane place for animals. I have no doubt that the persistence and dedication of the activists on the ground and the shelters and organizations in support of saving these dogs from slaughter will soon create the future we all want to see, one where the dog meat trade no longer exists. You can join us in taking a stand against the dog meat trade.Follow Kitty Block on Twitter @HSUSKittyBlock.The post Nearly 400 dogs rescued from slaughter as Chinese activists continue fighting infamous Yulin ‘festival’ appeared first on A Humane World.Related StoriesAs India swelters under intense heat waves, we’re helping communities care for their dogs – EnclosureAs India swelters under intense heat waves, we’re helping communities care for their dogsPhotographer shows survivors of dog meat farms in inspiring new light
