(WJAR) — A Warwick man facing animal cruelty charges was ordered held without bail in court on Friday.

Police say he and a woman were housing the dogs who were first thought to be coyotes.

The Warwick Police Department says those two dogs and more than a dozen cats were found living in deplorable conditions at a home here in Warwick.

Police are charging 32-year-old Andrew Sanville and 29-year-old Amanda Bray with multiple counts of animal cruelty and abandonment.

Authorities accuse the pair of setting the animals free.

Bray and Sanville each face:

  • One count of Animal Cruelty.
  • One Count of Care of Dogs.
  • One Count of Compulsory Rabies vaccination
  • Two Counts of Abandonment of Animals

Sanville entered a plea of not guilty on Friday.

Bray was released on personal recognizance while Sanville was held in violation of probation.

The two dogs were wandering around all week and were thought to be black coyotes.

The owner tells NBC 10 they are part wolf.

She says she moved to Woonsocket and left the dogs with the couple now facing charges.

“I let the police know as soon as I went to my mom’s house and saw them on the news and I have seen them on the news and I was like those are not coyotes, those are my dogs,” said Amanda Ddmarais, the dog’s owner.

Hybrid wolf dogs are not legal in Rhode Island.

The dogs are being DNA tested and results are expected in a few weeks.

Sanville pleaded ‘not guilty’ to all the charges, and a judge ordered him to be held without bail.
