It is recreational thrill killing season across America. My news feed was loaded this morning with grinning Fudds and selfies, so proud of their selfies boasting their trophy deer kills.
Per MT FWP “The total number of deer killed by hunters in Montana in 2023 was 173,942, which includes 85,390 antlered deer and 88,552 antlerless deer. This was a 17.6% decrease from the 2022 firearm deer harvest.
The 2023 deer kill was the fourth-highest in the last 10 years and the sixth-highest in the state’s history. However, the deer population in Montana has been declining since 2017. The 2022-2023 winter was severe, and the state experienced drought and disease in 2022. The estimated deer population for 2023 was 449,464, a 4.1% decline from 2022″
