SHARE Senate Bill 244 allows alligator hunting in Louisiana

LOUISIANA (WNTZ) – Louisiana is set to introduce a first-of-its-kind recreational alligator hunting season this Fall following the advancement of Senate Bill 244. The bill, sponsored by Sen. Allain, is currently on the Governor’s desk.

This new season aims to expand recreational opportunities for sportsmen and women across the state on public or private lands with landowner consent.

The establishment of this hunting season highlights the American alligator’s significant conservation success. With a dense alligator population throughout Louisiana, the La. Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) aims to increase recreational opportunities and promote the state’s rich hunting heritage.

This initiative comes as the species has recovered to a point where a recreational season can be sustained and celebrated.

Senate Bill 244 allows Louisianans to recreationally hunt alligators. Hunters will be able to pursue alligators on public lands or on private land, provided they have consent from the landowner.

The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission is scheduled to hold a meeting tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. to discuss the new season. Commissioners will receive and consider a Notice of Intent regarding the rules and regulations that will govern this hunting season.

The public can attend this meeting in person at the LDWF Headquarters or join remotely via Zoom. Information for accessing the Zoom meeting will be shared on the department’s website.

The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission meeting tomorrow will focus on outlining the official rules and regulations for the new recreational alligator hunting season. The Notice of Intent will detail how the season will be managed.
