HUNTERS in one state have the chance to win $10,000 over the next ten days as a competition targeting an invasive species begins.

Florida‘s annual hunting competition was launched on Friday and will continue to July 19.

The Florida Python Challenge encourages hunters to target the invasive Burmese Python which threatens the local eco-system, which in turn, impacts the local economy.

It takes place in eight areas across the state including Everglades National Park, Rotenberger, and Big Cypress.

Cash prizes are being dished out to groups and individuals who humanely kill the invasive snakes during the competition.

All hunters registered in the competition are categorized into veteran, novice, and professional.

Each category offers the same cash prizes with $1,000 given for the longest python caught in that group, the most pythons runner-up is awarded with $1,500 and $2,500 goes to the person in that category with the most pythons.

A whopping $10,000 grand prize is “awarded to the participant who removes the most pythons as part of the competition,” the website states.

Participants in the competition can only win one prize, if eligible for more than one, they will automatically get the highest-value prize.

All prizes are given by the Fish & Wildlife Foundation of Florida.
