Animals are Sentient! Time to End Foie Gras!

France has declared that animals are sentient and ‘not furniture!’

The French Parliament has overturned 200 years of law to elevate animals to the status of sentient beings. Although it was already obvious to most of us, this recognition in law is an important milestone for animals. As the law begins to acknowledge the sentience of animals, recognition will grow that animals have needs and desires of their own. And one day they will gain the rights that they have so long been denied.

Pope Still a Bit Confused

My fellow animal lovers, it’s time to quit singing praises for the Pope. It turns out Pope Francis has backed away from his alleged statement that (non-human) animals have souls and that our bygone pets (God rest their souls) will be waiting for us in Heaven (presumably with leash at the ready, for us to take them on a long-overdue poody walk).

Whether Pope Francis said that last week or not, the very idea that pets go to heaven has been vehemently denied by Vatican commentators. How would humankind ever square that with their notions of superiority and sense of entitlement to preferential Heavenly treatment?

But the Pope did recently do right by our biological underlings in proclaiming his belief in Evolution and the Big Bang Theory.  God is no ‘magician with a magic wand,’ he quickly added, being sure to assign ultimate credit to the mystical one created in Man’s image. (As to whether magicians are gods he wouldn’t divulge.)

Collective Evolution reported, “Pope Francis continues to shake-up the Christian world with his latest public revelation, announcing that evolution and the big bang theory are in fact real, Speaking to the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, [Wait, what? Pontifical sciences? Isn’t that an oxymoron?] Pope Francis’s words lessened the divide between the Christian faith and science with his shocking assertion about mankind’s evolution.”

The fact that originators of the Big Bang Theory never mentioned Heaven or its approximate location within the boundless Universe doesn’t seem to matter to His Holiness, but evidently there’s limited acreage within its gates since non-humans are not officially allowed in. Apparently they still haven’t evolved a savable soul.

Listen up, ladies (and men who care about women’s rights, duh!), because this one’s for you:

As an animal rights activist AND a feminist, I’ve always felt that it’s important for us women and girls to recognize the connection between feminism and the treatment of cows used by the dairy industry. While this may sound like a stretch at first, here’s why:

All cows who are used for their milk are female—in case ya didn’t already know that!

Female cows don’t need to be milked. Female cows produce milk for the same reason that human women do: to feed THEIR babies. On factory farms, calves are torn away from their mothers so that the momma cow’s milk can be saved for human consumption (we’re the ONLY species that drinks another species’ milk regularly—so weird!). This is what it looks like:

Cows produce milk only after they’ve been pregnant. In order to get cows pregnant, farmers forcibly impregnate them on what the industry calls a “rape rack.” Uhhhhh … read that again. A rape rack. That’s literally what it’s called. Can you really consider yourself someone who stands up for all females if you condone farmers’ use of RAPE RACKS to impregnate cows—just so they can DRAG their babies away and repeat the whole thing again?

Female cows in the dairy industry are treated as nothing more than baby- and milk-making machines—with no regard for their emotional lives. If they were allowed to do so, mother cows would spend months with their young, teaching, nurturing, and bonding with them. On factory farms, all they can do is cry out for their babies as they’re violently dragged away. For the milk to make it to grocery-store shelves, cows are hooked up to milking machines for most of their lives. No “old MacDonald’s farm” here. When their milk production decreases and the cows are no longer profitable, they’re sent to slaughter.

If you still aren’t getting the connection, let me break it down for you: Women and girls EVERYWHERE are being used and abused. Many of us have grown up in male-dominated societies that tell us what to do with our bodies and how they should be used, and sadly, we’re often seen as nothing more than objects. Many women and girls are forced into situations where they lose control over their bodies—and far too often, other people think that they deserve this control. That’s what’s happening to cows on dairy farms every single day—all for a totally unnecessary and disgusting product.

No moms want to be hooked up to a rape rack, be forcibly impregnated, and have their baby taken away from them. It’s up to us to exercise our “girl power” (the best kind of power there is!) and say enough is enough!

The New Christmas Story & Commandents

In the beginning the Great Felidæ said, “Let the Earth bring forth every kind of living creature. And we will make cats in our image, after our likeness. They shall rule.”
And it was foretold: the wolf & grizzly shall once again roam free, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and a little kitten shall lead them.
And it came to pass, after much begetting, that many cats had gone astray, and there was no room in the shelter. Then an angel of the Felidæ came to Mary and Joseph and said, “we need foster parents.” And she delivered to them a kitten wrapped in swaddling clothes.
And lo, three wise men came to bring gifts to the baby kitten and to worship her. The kitten had many titles: wonderful, counselor, princess of peace, Queen of Judæa. The wise men wondered what to call her.
The one who brought gold said, we should call her name Manuela, the Goddess is with us. The one who brought incense said we should call her Gloria, her Excellency. The third asked the kitten what she thought.
The kitten responded “Mrrrrh.” And there was a twinkling in her eye. And she said: Humans are corruptible.
For verily, I say unto thee, I am thy cat, a jealous cat, there shall be no others before me; humans will be humbled, and few.
Remaining Humans will now obey the New Commandments:
  1. Humans shall no longer multiply and subdue the Earth.
  2. Thou shalt not wear, eat, experiment upon, hunt, trap, harass, capture, poison, torture, or otherwise, in any way, mistreat or disrespect non-human creation.
3. Non-humans: those who crawl, burrow, fly, walk, swim, run, climb–from the great mammals to the smallest insects and bacteria–will be free from human bondage, never-ending human development and destruction, at last.
  1. All the waters of the Earth shall once again flow free. Dams, and other human diversions, machines, will be destroyed.
  2. Non-humans will take precedence over the land. Humans will be relegated to certain, small areas of the Earth, which will not disturb non-humans.
  3. Wild Nature will be held Sacred and Secure, as the Apostle, Walkin’ Jim Stoltz proclaimed in his songs to the Earth.
  4. Humans shall not make War anymore. Those lands scarred and desecrated by Endless Human War shall be restored.
  5. All weapons shall no longer exist: Guns, Arrows, Snares, Bombs, Cages, Spears, & any other weapon used to injure, kill, or capture, will be no more.
  6. Humanist Ideology & Religion shall now be replaced by Wisdom, Awe, Respect, Adoration, and Humbleness to The Great Filedae, who will Reign Over All.
  7. The Earth will breath a sigh of relief from the terror, greed, avarice, ignorance, prejudice, and mindlessness of The Rogue Species, once called Humans.
These New Commandments Shall Now Declare a New Earth, birthed from the ashes of the sick, dying Earth humans have made. We now sing praises to the Great Felidae. “unto her, all the Power, the Glory, and Majesty—-FOREVER, AMEN.

Miracles Are for Animals Too

As the Pope recently decreed, animals are hereby allowed into Heaven (as long as they wipe their feet, shut the door behind them and stay off the furniture). Since non-humans are now part of the in-group permitted into Paradise, it’s only logical to assume that God is granting them the occasional miracle too.

You might be wondering why He would put off eternal bliss for animals until their afterlife, considering that He allows untold misery to befall animals on a daily basis—for example, farmed animals like pigs, chickens, cows, lambs and turkeys spend every day of their short lifetimes in the most inhumane of conditions. Apparently he thinks the odd miracle more than makes up for a lifetime of desolation.

Miracles for humans are often shrouded in tragedy. When 800,000 people died in the catastrophic day-after-Christmas Indonesian Tsunami, someone surely declared it a miracle that anyone survived. Animal miracles are also often hard to see at first glance, as well.

Here then, is a partial list of some of the animal miracles of 2014:

– Although 426 wolves were mercilessly killed by hunters and trappers in the Great Lakes area this year alone (272 in Minnesota and 154 in Wisconsin) a federal judge miraculously threw out an Obama administration decision to remove the gray wolf population in the western Great Lakes region from the endangered species list — a decision that banned further wolf hunting and trapping in those states.

-Despite the fact that we’re in the midst of the sixth mass extinction event in Earth’s history, with so many species going extinct per year that no one can possibly keep track, last year remote cameras miraculously captured images of both an ocelot and a jaguar in southern Arizona.

– While no actual examples of rights to which a nonhuman animal is entitled are given and there is no statement that either orangutans in general, or Sandra in particular, are entitled to any rights, a seemingly miraculous landmark decision in Argentina appears to suggest that some non-human beings (animals) are entitled to some kind of rights, and therefore their protection is required…

– Even though more than 155,000 birds were destroyed after a bird flu virus hit 8 locations in B.C.s’ Fraser Valley, extra turkeys are being shipped to southwest Canada this Christmas to make up the shortage caused by the avian flu outbreak, and officials say birds raised within the province are safe to eat.

Wait a minute, that’s not an animal miracle, it’s just another miracle in favor of we overly-successful humans…
