© Serge MelesanA stock photo shows a pod of orca underwater. In 2020 three male orca were suspected to be the culprits of increased boat attacks.
Orcas have attacked and sunk a sailboat with five people on board, miles from the Portugal coast. The sailboat was about six miles off the coast of Sines when the mammals attacked, a statement from the Portuguese Navy said.
The boat was so badly damaged it started to sink. The five crew members were then rescued by a nearby fishing vessel. They were able to go aboard a lifeboat.
There have been no reported injuries following the incident.
Lisbon’s Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center was alerted to the incident at around midnight. The passengers were then escorted to shore, and were able to dock safely at 2:43 a.m.
“Interaction with these mammals occurs mainly due to the curious behavior of juvenile orcas, which are attracted to the moving and noisy vessel structures, such as the rudder and propeller, can get too close to the vessels and embankments,” the navy said in a statement.

“In the event of sighting these mammals, all sailors are advised to turn off the engine, in order to inhibit the rotation of the propeller, and immobilize the rudder door, thus demotivating these mammals to interact with the moving structures of the boats.”
Newsweek has contacted the Portuguese Navy for more information.
Orcas often come to the coast of Portugal during the summer months, to feed on the tuna that live around the Gibraltar Strait. Although fearsome predators to other marine wildlife, they rarely attack humans outside of captivity.
However, this has not been the first instance of orcas behaving aggressively to boats in this particular area, although it appears to be the first time a boat has sunk as a result.
Since 2020, orca boat attacks have been increasing off the coast of Portugal. Authorities identified three juvenile orca believed to be the culprits at the start of the attacks. In particular, they appeared to be targeting the hull and rudder of the sailboats.
The BBC reported in 2020 that in just six months, there were 40 attacks involving orcas off the coast of Spain and Portugal. The attacks have continued since then. One incident saw a couple from the U.K. left adrift miles off from the the coast of Portugal after their boat was attacked.
The Navy is launching an investigation into this most recent incident, according to a Facebook page dedicated to discussing orca attacks.
Orcas are incredibly intelligent mammals and display complex, emotive behavior. It’s known they can suffer mental trauma, and act out as a result. This was documented in the 2013 documentary on Sea World’s captive killer whale, Tilikum. However it is unclear why attacks may happen in the wild.
Scientists have observed killer whales approaching fishing boats, having learned that the fishing lines could provide an easy meal. It is possible that this has taught certain pods to be bolder in approaching boats.
It is also possible that these “attacks” are not supposed to be an act of aggression. The giant mammals are playful creatures, and some scientists believe they approach boats out of curiosity. Male killer whales however can sometimes grow up to 26 feet, and weigh 12,000 pounds, meaning their “games” can be frightening and dangerous.
One Facebook user, posting in Orca Attack – Iberia, said it may help to know more about the models of the boats being attacked, as it could “help to better understand what motivates Orcas to this behavior.”

Consumer attitudes about plant-based meats have certainly shifted over the past decade. This change has mostly been embraced by chains and their customers, but over at Cracker Barrel, fans are in absolute shambles over a Facebook post encouraging diners to try the restaurant’s new Impossible Sausage menu item.
“Discover new meat frontiers. Experience the out of this world flavor of Impossible™ Sausage Made From Plants next time you Build Your Own Breakfast,” read the Facebook post shared by Cracker Barrel on Monday, August 1. Many users didn’t take kindly to the suggestion, which has received 2,400 comments and counting since being shared.
One user demanded that Cracker Barrel “stick to the basics”; another informed the restaurant that they had “just lost the customer base.” While some customers were clearly distraught over the post, others questioned why a lone menu item was causing so much turmoil.
The thing is, the Impossible Sausage has been on the menu at select Cracker Barrel locations for nearly a year now. A Cracker Barrel blog post from September 2021 stated that the restaurant would soon expand its offerings of Impossible Sausage menu items.
“We want to make sure everybody feels welcome at our table,” the blog post read. “That means we’re constantly on the lookout for new ways to make your experience with us even better, so we’re especially excited about this news.”
Despite the addition of Impossible Sausage to Cracker Barrel’s menu of Southern staples, meat-loving customers can still very much order pork sausage and bacon with their Build Your Own Breakfast during their next visit.

When the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano erupted on Jan. 15, it sent the equivalent of more than 58,000 Olympic-size swimming pools’ worth of water into the stratosphere, researchers say.
Tonga Geological Services
The violent eruption of Tonga’s Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano injected an unprecedented amount of water directly into the stratosphere — and the vapor will stay there for years, likely affecting the Earth’s climate patterns, NASA scientists say.
The massive amount of water vapor is roughly 10% of the normal amount of vapor found in the stratosphere, equaling more than 58,000 Olympic-size swimming pools.
“We’ve never seen anything like it,” said atmospheric scientist Luis Millán, who works at NASA’sJet Propulsion Laboratory. Millán led a study of the water the volcano sent into the sky; the team’s research was published inGeophysical Research Letters.

Sex Education star Gillian Anderson is calling on Capri Holdings – owner of fashion giants including Versace, Jimmy Choo, and Michael Kors – to ban exotic skins.
The acclaimed actor has written a letter to the company, urging it follows in suit of brands such as Mulberry and Chanel, who have already removed exotic skins from its collections.
Vegan charity PETA will read Anderson’s letter to the organisation today, during its annual shareholder meeting.
“We’re pleased that Capri recently invested in Desserto—an innovative vegan cactus-leather company,” the letter reads.
“Capri clearly understands that the future of fashion lies in animal-free and environmentally responsible materials that appeal to today’s informed and socially conscious consumers.
“Given that Capri has pledged to do its part to make alternative, low-impact materials a reality for the fashion industry, the company must do more to uphold this pledge, starting with no longer sourcing exotic-animal skins.
“From Texas to Indonesia, South Africa, Vietnam, and Zimbabwe, PETA U.S. and other PETA entities have exposed extreme cruelty to animals exploited in the global exotic-skins industry.”
This isn’t the first time the star has used her platform for good.
Last year, following the Covid pandemic outbreak, Anderson urged fashion house Saint Lauren to ditch the use of animal fur.
“Fur production requires toxic chemicals to keep pelts from decomposing, and fur farms are breeding grounds for disease,” she said.
“COVID-19 spread like wildfire among sick animals on fur farms, requiring governments to bring forward legislation to shut down these cruel and filthy establishments, from which the virus spread to both humans and wild animals. “
“It’s illogical to keep this dwindling, dangerous trade afloat for the sake of the few remaining unscrupulous designers who haven’t yet broken their fur habit.”

‘Major Problems Down The Road’: Biden Drains Petroleum Reserves Of Crucial Type Of Crude

President Joe Biden’s Department of Energy (DOE) is emptying the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) of a crucial kind of oil that domestic refiners can easily process, which could cause oil prices to skyrocket, experts told the DCNF.
American refiners prefer medium-sour crude as they can easily process it into gasoline and other fuel products, according to Bloomberg. The DOE released 4.6 million barrels of medium-sour crude oil from the SPR in late July, meaning that the reserve now has more light-sweet crude than sour — 235 million barrels to 234.9 million — which could raise fuel costs, experts say.

“It is going to cause major problems down the road,” Tracy Shuchart, a partner at Intelligence Quarterly, told the Daily Caller News Foundation.
Domestic refiners lack the ability to refine light-sweet crude, a different type of oil that has a much lower density and sulfur content, so sweet crude has to be refined overseas, according to Marketplace.
“As they deplete our stores, refineries will have to become dependent on those sources or make costly changes to their operations,” Institute for Energy Research Senior Vice President Dan Kish told the DCNF.
“Those changes also take a long time, idling U.S. capacity when they’re already running all-out,” he said.
HOUSTON, TEXAS – APRIL 01: A person walks into a Shell gas station on April 01, 2022 in Houston, Texas.
Russia, the Middle East and Venezuela produce most of the world’s supply of medium-sour crude, according to the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies. Russian sour crude exports into the U.S. are currently sparse due to sanctions following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, exacerbating the ongoing energy crisis as other suppliers of sour crude have been unable to make up for the loss of Russian supplies.
Biden in March stated that he would release 1 million barrels per day over six months from the SPR to combat high gas prices caused by “Putin’s price hike.” The Biden administration touted its releases of oil Monday, claiming that the releases brought gas prices down by up to 40 cents per gallon.
“The Biden Administration continues to ‘salt the earth’ to kill off any future for conventional energy, even as prices have skyrocketed,” Kish said.
The White House and DOE did not immediately respond to the DCNF’s request for comment.
