A professional trophy hunter shot and killed the largest ‘tusker’ elephant in Botswana after paying $50,000 to join a hunt.

Botswanan hunter Leon Kachelhoffer claims he killed the big tusker, which was carrying 200lb (91kg) of ivory, on the country’s northern border with Namibia.

The elephant was in its early-50s and killed with a single shot, a hunting industry spokesperson confirmed.

There are only 40 ‘hundred pounder’ tusker elephants with at least one tusk weighing 100lb left roaming in Africa.

Kachelhoffer reposted a Facebook story describing his controversial conquest and appeared on a podcast to explain the hunt.

He told Blood Origins host Robbie Kroger that he did not expect a controversy to arise.

Kachelhoffer laughed and said:…

Although wild birds are much more likely to survive bird flu than domestic fowl, Montana wildlife officials are still noticing fatalities.

In a press conference Friday, employees of state Fish, Wildlife and Parks said that while waterfowl seem likely to survive Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, wild turkeys are dying. The discovery comes as the state’s male wild turkey season begins. Hunters are advised to avoid birds that appear sick.

“It appears these birds, at least the ones in Montana, these animals, several of them died in one location. So, it might be highly fatal to them,” said Jennifer Ramsey, FWP veterinarian.

Ramsey said infected birds appear to be getting…

BERLIN (AP) — Twitter says it will no longer allow advertisers on its site who deny the scientific consensus on climate change, echoing a policy already in place at Google.

“Ads shouldn’t detract from important conversations about the climate crisis,” the company said in a statement outlining its new policy Friday.

There was no indication that the change would affect what users post on the social media site, which along with Facebook has been targeted by groups seeking to promote misleading claims about climate change.

New Mexico faces a long and potentially devastating wildfire season, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said Saturday, as Southwestern wildfires cause destruction and force people from their homes.

Hundreds of structures were lost in a growing number of wind-driven blazes across drought-stricken New Mexico, Lujan Grisham said Saturday.

Over 20 active wildfires were burning in at least 16 of the state’s 33 counties, in the wake of winds that gusted up to 90 mph (145 kph) on Friday, Lujan said during a briefing streamed online. “So half the state has a fire issue.”

With so many fires burning in April, well before the normal May or June start of the wildfire season, “our risk season is incredibly and dangerously early,” Lujan Grisham said.

Wildfire has become a year-round threat in the West given changing conditions that include earlier snowmelt and rain coming later in the fall, scientist have said. The problems have been exacerbated by decades of fire suppression and poor management along with a more than 20-year megadrought that studies link to human-caused climate change.

New Mexico as of Saturday had the most major wildfires burning of any state, though neighboring Arizona also had large fires that included one that burned 30 homes near Flagstaff on Tuesday.

News – National | 2022-04-22

byPetrus Muronga

THE Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism says it is currently developing a crocodile management plan involving hunting quotas and population management.

This was announced by ministry spokesperson Romeo Muyunda this week, following recent crocodile attacks in the Kavango East and Kavango West regions.

This comes as the body of a 13-year-old boy, who was attacked by a crocodile at Mupapama village in the Mashare constituency in the Kavango East region on Thursday last week has still not been recovered.

Mushongo Manga, who was a pupil at Sambyu Primary School, was attacked by a crocodile at the beginning of the Easter weekend when he and his two siblings went to the river to bath.

Muyunda said the ministry is at an advanced stage of developing a crocodile management plan to consider effective ways to manage crocodiles, and identify economic opportunities following…

In the heart of Silicon Valley in Palo Alto, California, there’s a group of retired physicists and engineers working on a nozzle to save their grandchildrens’ lives. The team, affectionately dubbed “the Old Salts,” designed the nozzle to spray sea salt particles in a specific size and concentration into the air. Once finished, it’ll be used to inject the substance into the skies over certain regions of the world.

It’s all part of an experiment to see if this approach can “brighten” clouds so they’re capable of reflecting more sunlight away from the Earth. While the tests would be small, they will attempt to uncover whether a larger scale operation like this could cool downthe planet—albeit temporarily. Then…
