LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — A local family who freed a fox from a steel trap has been fined by the state and threatened with arrest after 13 Investigates shared their story.

It’s a gross misdemeanor in the state of Nevada to disturb somebody else’s trap.

But when we spoke to the Nevada Division of Wildlifefor our original story, NDOW confirmed they’d investigated and did not issue criminal citations.

That changed over the weekend, sparking a call for the governor to intervene.

  • Proposed legislation in Britain to ban the import of hunting trophies like horns, antlers, and tusks enjoys popular support.
  • But in Africa, rural communities often rely on revenue from trophy hunting to support development and conservation projects.
  • In response to a recent Mongabay commentary, “UK trophy hunting import ban not supported by rural Africans,” writer Merrill Sapp argues that it’s possible to have both development and healthy elephant populations, without hunting.
  • This article is a commentary. The views expressed are those of the authors, not necessarily of Mongabay.

In December, the British government announced aplan to banthe import of hunting trophies into the UK. The proposal has popular support, but there is a vocal contingent that claims the ban will do more harm than good for both people and animals. Though the ban would be for all trophy hunted items…

Illinois brought back the hunting of bobcats almost six years ago. Sightings of the animal have increased rapidly across the state. West Central Illinois appears to be the prime place to come looking for one during its regulated hunting and trapping season during the winter. Prior to 2016, the species was considered a protected species due to over hunting in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries.

Illinois Department of Natural Resources Program Manager for the Wildlife Diversity Program Stan McTaggart says that the bobcat population and species is a true conservation success story. He says over harvest of the animals occurred due to a lack of any conservation laws. He says that over the past century the state was able to bring back…

A highly infectious and deadly strain of bird flu has been detected in a bald eagle in British Columbia, posing a potential threat to hundreds and perhaps thousands of backyard flocks across Oregon as well as large commercial operations with millions of birds.

The strain is the same one that caused an outbreak in late 2014 and early 2015, forcing the destruction of millions of birds.

The virus poses little risk to humans. Infections in people are rare and are associated with close, prolonged and unprotected…

March 19, 2022

OLYMPIA, Wash.- The Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission voted 5-4 today
against a proposed 2022 spring bear-hunting season. The vote by the
commission, which oversees the state’s Department of Fish and Wildlife, is
the second related to this year’s season. It follows an attempt by hunting
groups to reverse the original November 2021 suspension of the hunt.

“This vote is a big win for both science and black bears, and it will
protect bear cubs from being orphaned by a reckless spring hunt,” said
Sophia Ressler, a staff attorney at the Center for Biological Diversity.
“The commission once again told state wildlife officials that they won’t
authorize a hunt without a proper analysis of the threats to Washington’s
bears. We hope the wildlife agency actually listens this time.”

A tie vote in November failed to approve the rule needed to create a 2022
spring bear hunting season…

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – MARCH 19, 2022

Commission halts unethical and unscientific spring black bear hunt from proceeding after hunting groups petitioned to reinstate itOlympia, Wash.— The Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission voted 5-4 today to oppose a permanent spring black bear hunting season. The decision follows on the heels of a 4-4 split decision in November to cancel permits for the 2022 spring bear hunt. “This vote is a huge win for Washington’s black bears and for democratic process,” said Michelle Lute, PhD in wildlife management and national carnivore conservation manager for Project Coyote. “Washingtonians consistently showed up to voice their strong opposition to an ethically indefensible spring bear hunt that is also not supported by science. Today they were heard.” Following the November decision, a group of hunting groups petitioned the Commission to reinstate the spring 2022 hunting season and enact a permanent spring bear hunt. On March…

Washington Fish & Wildlife Commission Rejects Rule to Set Permanent Spring Bear Hunt

Commissioners cite scientific deficiencies and the need for a values-based discussion

Seattle, WA– Washington Wildlife First is pleased by the Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission’s 5-4 vote on Saturday to reject a proposed rule that would have instituted a permanent spring bear hunt in Washington.

The vote is the culmination of a process that began last fall, which has included many hours of Commission debate and generated widespread public interest, including hundreds of people who signed up to testify about the rule, and tens of thousands who submitted written comment. Management of the Department of Fish and Wildlife had recommended approval of the rule.

“We are grateful for the Commission’s thoughtful consideration of this issue,” said Samantha Bruegger, executive director…
