Two weeks of bullets and death in America

The wave of violence this month has been relentless, deepening a gnawing sense that shootings are now just a deplorably consistent fact of American life.

In the last 14 days, America has been shattered again and again and again by the horror of gun violence.

At least 40 people across the U.S. have been shot dead since May 11, when a man walked into a Dallas hair salon and shot three women.

The lethal tally, compiled by the Gun Violence Archive, has only deepened a gnawing sense that such shootings are now just a deplorably consistent fact of American life in the 21st century.

In the absence of any meaningful legislative action, many see bullets and bloodshed as grim inevitabilities. In a country that prides itself on being a beacon of liberty and freedom, a growing number of Americans feel that no place — church, school, the grocery story — is safe anymore.

Seventeen people were wounded in downtown Milwaukee on May 13 as fans were leaving an NBA playoff game.

The next day, 10 people were gunned down and three were wounded at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York.

Five people were hurt and one person was killed a day later during church services at a senior community in Laguna Woods, California.

In the days that followed, gunshots rang out from coast to coast, across the South and the Midwest, in big cities and small towns.

The motives in each case varied — racist venom, in some — but the end result was the same: shock, heartbreak and bottomless grief, families and friends scrambling to make sense of the senseless.

The latest massacre at a grade school in Uvalde, Texas, roughly 83 miles west of San Antonio, shreds at the soul of a country that once believed kids could sit at their classroom desks without fear.

The shooting Tuesday at Robb Elementary School killed two teachers and at least 19 children — innocent, bright-eyed kids just two days from summer break and looking ahead to middle school.

America has been here before far too many times. Columbine. Sandy Hook. Parkland. We refer to these massacres in shorthand, like signposts on a road to oblivion. The collective trauma of those tragedies lives in all of us.

The political reaction to mass shootings in America has also followed a dismaying formula.

Politicians tweet “thoughts and prayers.” Democratic lawmakers demand gun control measures. Republicans dig in their heels. Congress flails and momentum stalls, leaving the country to move on to the next political crisis or self-inflicted wound.

Young people who bear the scars of mass shootings push for a better future. The survivors of the 2018 massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, for example, want us to imagine a brighter, safer world.

But in the meantime, America waits.

We wait for the next burst of bullets, because we sense with dreadful resignation that this cycle of monstrous violence may never end.

A Russian lawmaker is warning Friday that recent comments from Poland’s leaders are encouraging Moscow to “put it in first place in the queue for denazification after Ukraine.”

Russian State Duma Deputy Oleg Morozov, using language Russia has sought to justify its bloody invasion of Ukraine, made the remark on his Telegram page, according to Russian state media.

“By its statements about Russia as a ‘cancer tumor’ and about the ‘indemnity’ that we must pay to Ukraine, Poland encourages us to put it in first place in the queue for denazification after Ukraine,” Morozov reportedly wrote.

DEFENSE SECRETARY AUSTIN SPEAKS WITH RUSSIAN DEFENSE MINISTER FOR FIRST TIME IN MONTHS, URGES UKRAINE CEASEFIRE

On Tuesday, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki wrote a column for the Telegraph criticizing Russian President Vladimir Putin and the propaganda he is spreading about the war in Ukraine.

“Putin’s ‘Russkiy Mir’ ideology is the equivalent of 20th-century communism and Nazism. It is an ideology through which Russia justifies invented rights and privileges for its country,” Morawiecki said. “In the name of this ideology Mariupol and dozens of Ukrainian cities were razed as it sent Russian soldiers to war, convinced them of their superiority, and encouraged them to commit inhuman war crimes – the murder, rape and torture of innocent civilians.”

“We cannot be under any illusions. This is not insanity but a deliberate strategy that has already opened the gates to genocide. ‘Russkiy Mir’ is a cancer which is consuming not only the majority of Russian society, but also poses a deadly threat to the whole of Europe,” he added. “Therefore it is not enough to support Ukraine in its military struggle with Russia. We must root out this monstrous new ideology entirely.”

A “potentially hazardous” asteroid measuring more than a mile long will zoom past Earth this week, the largest asteroid expected to get relatively close to our planet in 2022.

Theasteroid, named 1989 JA, is estimated to be 1.1 miles long, or 5,905 feet, according to NASA’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies. For reference, the asteroid is twice the size of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the tallest building in the world.

NASA says there are nearly 29,000 near-Earth asteroids in space, but 1989 JA is one of 878 that are at least 3,280 feet wide.

An asteroid that large could cause catastrophe on Earth, but there is no need to worry. When 1989 JA makes its closest approach to Earth on Friday, it will be 2.5 million miles away, or about 10 times the distance to the…

The legislature has sent the governor a bill that would set up a new January hunting season for deer in counties where some of the state licenses for harvesting antlerless deer were not sold. Senator Ken Rozenboom said the bill would let deer hunters use semi-automatic rifles during that period.

“The purpose of this season is not to hunt for sport, but rather to manage the size of the herd,” Rozenboom said, “which is why more efficient and effective firearms are being authorized.”

The bill cleared the Senate unanimously in April and the House approved it today on a 56-34 vote. Representative Todd Prichard, a Democrat from Charles City, said it’s a dangerous idea to use AR-15s to hunt for deer.

“The range that I’m familiar with this type of weapon…

Climate “doomers” believe the world has already lost the battle against global warming. That’s wrong – and while that view is spreading online, there are others who are fighting the viral tide.

As he walked down the street wearing a Jurassic Park cap, Charles McBryde raised his smartphone, stared at the camera, and hit the record button.

“Ok, TikTok, I need your help.”

Charles is 27 and lives in California. Hisquirky TikTok videosabout news, history, and politics have earned him more than 150,000 followers.

In the video in question, recorded in October 2021, he decided it was time for a confession.

“I am a climate doomer,” he said. “Since about 2019, I have believed that there’s little to nothing that we can do to actually reverse climate change on a global scale.”

New threats of a nuclear strike were made on Russian state TV, as the head of state-controlled Russia Today (RT) Margarita Simonyan said on air that the war in Ukraine will either end with Russia’s victory or a catastrophe for all humanity.

©Mikhail Svetlov/Getty ImagesRT editor-in-chief Margarita Simonyan made new nuclear threats on air. She said a nuclear strike is the only alternative to Russia winning the war in Ukraine.

“They all believe we’ll definitely lose, and the West will definitely win,” Simonyan said. “They say this, not understanding that it’s impossible. It’s just not possible, it will not happen. Either this ends badly for all humanity or we win. There’s no third option.”
