Newark Police are aware of recent concerns about the use of horses and carts on public roads.

Officers have been investigating reports that a horse trap was involved in a collision with cars in Newark last week.

Police said:

‘Several vehicles were reportedly damaged during the incident on Beacon Hill Road, at around 7 p.m. on Saturday, 12 July.

‘Police have since arrested a 20-year-old man on suspicion of theft of conveyance and causing suffering to a protected animal.

‘These enquiries are still ongoing, while the horse involved in the incident has been located.

‘Please rest assured that our officers will always investigate all reports of collisions and damage on the roads.

‘This includes those involving horses and carts/traps.

‘Their presence on the roads is not, in itself, a crime, although this is subject to a number of conditions.

‘These include them not causing an obstruction, annoyance, or danger; drivers adhering to traffic signs; and them not being operated by someone under the influence.

‘If anyone has any concerns that an offence is being committed using horses and carts/traps, please continue to report this to the police by calling 101.
Any issues relating to animal welfare should be directed to the RSPCA.’

The good news? McDonald’s dog, a silver Lab named Jeter, was also present and is OK.
