SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – Radical environmentalists who threw acid and smoke bombs at Japanese whalers were found in contempt of court for continuing their relentless campaign to disrupt the annual whale hunt off the waters of Antarctica.

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals Friday ordered a commissioner to determine how much Paul Watson and members of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society he founded owe Japanese whalers for lawyer fees, damage to their ships and for violating the court order to stop their dangerous protests.

The Japanese whalers are demanding $2 million in addition to their attorney fees and damage and cost to their ships for warding off the protests.

The environmentalists’ exploits have been documented on the long-running Animal Planet reality TV series “Whale Wars.”

Sea Shepherd said in a statement it is disappointed with the ruling and considering its legal options.

“We are considering our legal options at this time, including the possibility of an appeal,” it said.

In 2012, the court ordered Sea Shepherd to stay at least 500 feet from Japanese whalers and to halt dangerous activities like attempting to ram the whalers and throwing smoke bombs and bottles of acid at their ships. The crews of Sea Shepherd ships also drag metal-reinforced ropes in the water to damage propellers and rudders, launch flares with hooks, and point high-powered lasers at the whalers to annoy crew members.

The Japanese whalers filed a lawsuit in Seattle in 2011 seeking a court order halting the Sea Shepherd’s campaign.

The 9th Circuit in December 2012 ordered the Sea Shepherd’s to stop harassing the Japanese fleet and for the group’s four ships to stay at least 500 feet from the whalers.

Watson then transferred all of Sea Shepherd’s U.S. assets to foreign entities controlled by the group. Sea Shepherd has organizations in Australia, Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.

Watson also stepped down from the board of directors of Sea Shepherd organizations in the U.S. and Australia. Sea Shepherd Australia took over management of “operation zero tolerance,” the group’s annual harassment campaign of the whalers in the Southern Ocean.

Watson also resigned as captain of the Sea Shepherd’s flagship the “Steve Irwin,” but remained aboard as an “observer.”

In February 2013, the 9th Circuit appointed a commissioner to investigate whether Watson and members of the Sea Shepherd should be held in contempt. The commissioner concluded on Jan. 31 that the Sea Shepherd wasn’t in violation of the court order because the harassment campaign was being managed outside the United States. The same month, the group’s “Steve Irwin” vessel with Watson aboard collided with a Japanese whaler.

Hung and Christmas-decorated coyote stirs outrage

Hung and Christmas-decorated coyote stirs outrage

Posted by Ted McDermott on Thu, Dec 11, 2014 at 4:42 PM

Earlier this week, Christine Svoboda was driving from her home in Thompson Falls to Plains when she caught sight of something strange and disturbing on the side of River Road, near the Sanders County Fairgrounds: a coyote, hanging by its ankle from a tree, with a red Christmas bow. She initially thought it was a wolf.

CHRISTINE SVOBODA

  • Christine Svoboda

“I was mortified by it,” Svoboda says. “I like wildlife. I moved to Montana, because I love living among nature, and then you see sad things. It’s cruelty to animals, is what it is. It’s very disrespectful to animals.”

Sanders County Commissioner Carol Brooker, who represents the Plains area, says she doesn’t know a lot about the offending coyote, but she does know Svoboda isn’t the only one alarmed by bizarre decoration. According to Brooker, River Road is the second busiest thoroughfare in the county. Its traffic, she says, regularly includes school buses.

“It’s really unnerved a lot of people,” Brooker says.

While Brooker says there is an old ranching tradition of hanging dead coyotes to ward off other coyotes from vulnerable livestock, she doesn’t believe this to be the intention in this case.

“This particular place that this is hanging, I don’t think they have any livestock,” Brooker says, adding that the animal is in a yard, not on a ranch.

According to Brooker, the Sander County Sheriff’s Department is aware of the coyote but is unable to do anything about it, since it’s on private property. As for Svoboda, she says she took photos of the hung animal in an attempt to raise awareness.

“I thought maybe I would try to just let them know that somebody knows, that somebody saw it, and maybe it’s not okay to do that,”

HSUS offers $5,000 reward for person who killed dolphin with arrow

NOAA seeks person who killed dolphin with arrow

A $5,000 reward is being offered in the disturbing case of a dolphin that washed ashore dead with a hunting arrow protruding from its side.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is investigating the death, which happened over the weekend in Orange Beach, Alabama. The agency says it is the second human-related dolphin death in the Northern Gulf of Mexico since mid November.

NOAA scientists think the dolphin may have survived for at least five days before dying from a secondary infection caused by the wound. The dolphin was shot with a steel-tipped hunting arrow that had a yellow feather on it.

The Humane Society of the United States and the Humane Society Wildlife Land Trust are offering the reward with the hope it will lead to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible.

“This intelligent, social creature experienced tremendous suffering from this senseless act. We are grateful for NOAA’s work to investigate this heinous crime and are hoping someone with information will come forward,” said Alabama HSUS Director Mindy Gilbert in a news release.

If you have information about the incident, call NOAA’s Office of Law Enforcement in Niceville, FL, at (850) 729-8628 or the NOAA Enforcement Hotline at 1-800-853-1964 as soon as possible. Tips can be left anonymously.

It was the second human-caused death of a dolphin since mid-November. NOAA is investigating the deadly shooting of a pregnant bottlenose dolphin found dead on Miramar Beach.

To report a stranded, injured or sick dolphin, call 1-877-WHALE-HELP (1-877-942-5343)

And From

Though it remains unclear just who the perpetrators of these killings are, there has been speculation that local fishermen — disgruntled by dolphins stealing their bait or catch — may be responsible.

There have, in the past, been instances of fishermen intentionally harming dolphins. In 2009, for example, a man in Panama City, Florida, was sentenced to two years in prison after he was found guilty of making pipe bombs to kill dolphins. Several fishermen have also been slapped with fines in recent years for shooting the animals.

Nature television is running wild

December 9

The Discovery Channel’s overhyped “Eaten Alive” episode Sunday evening disappointed viewers for failing to deliver on its promise to show the ultimate man-versus-nature showdown. The promotional ads boasted that naturalist Paul Rosolie, armed with a “snake-proof suit,” would allow himself to be eaten by an anaconda. But Rosolie did not go into “the belly of the beast.” Nowhere close. He didn’t even get in the anaconda’s jaws.

The bait-and-switch move infuriated viewers. But false advertising was not the worst crime committed. “Eaten Alive” featured an appalling example of human-animal relations. Snakes were jumped on, grabbed, pestered, goaded, and harassed. Animal harassment for the sake of entertainment is one of the most troubling ethical issues in wildlife filmmaking, and one that is increasingly common with the advent of nature reality television shows. Other networks, including some that claim to have environmental and educational goals, are equally guilty of going to extremes to capture “money shots.”

The MTV series “Wildboyz” was a repeat offender, featuring hosts who chased cheetahs, grabbed crocodiles, stuck their tongues in a giraffe’s mouth, and goaded scorpions into stinging them. In the Animal Planet show “Into the Pride,” animal trainer Dave Salmoni informs viewers that an overly aggressive pride of lions must be tamed to accept a growing number of ecotourists in the area, or they’ll be killed. But Salmoni “calms” the animals by increasingly aggravating them –maneuvering cameras in the faces of their cubs and walking toward their fresh antelope kill. The lions are gratuitously provoked to produce exciting television and, in the process, they become upset, alarmed, and needlessly stressed.

sarah-palin-lope-navo1Then there was Sarah Palin’s caribou slaughter on her short-lived Learning Channel show “Sarah Palin’s Alaska.” Airing footage of an animal’s death purely for viewer enjoyment takes a special kind of insensitivity.

There are many ethical issues in documenting animals’ natural lives through photography, including deceiving the audience by using captive animals and harming conservation by demonizing animals like sharks and wolves. Of these, animal harassment is particularly troubling because it will, by definition, distress the animal and even injure it. Justifying animal harassment in the name of conservation or awareness of environmental issues is unethical, yet pervasive in the industry. It’s also challenging to combat because most of the cruelty happens out in the field, with no witnesses.

Often adding to the abusive nature of a show, producers sometimes push a duplicitous defense, insisting that the show has conservationist goals. “Eaten Alive” tried this approach. In a statement on his Web site, Rosolie states, “The snakes that I work with are under threat from hunting and habitat destruction, and need help.” But as it turned out, there was virtually nothing in the show, apart from a few unpersuasive comments from Rosolie, to encourage conservation of the rain forest or to help anacondas. This is a new form of greenwashing, a deceptive PR effort to make a product seem more environmentally friendly than it is. This is especially offensive coming from a network like Discovery Channel, which promotes itself as a source of environmental and educational information. The decision to air “Eaten Alive” has serious negative consequences not only for the wildlife involved in the stunt, but also for the public’s awareness of its condition.

“Eaten Alive” likely did more to harm the reputation of the anaconda than to enlighten people. The preview demonized the anaconda as a “dangerous beast” and the show pushed that image by goading the snake to attack. While these beleaguered animals are merely defending themselves against intruders, this type of programming simply perpetuates inflated and irrational fears about the dangers of wildlife. The public is unlikely to support a species that they perceive as menacing. If “naturalists” like Rosolie and “environmental authorities” like Discovery Channel and Animal Planet fail to demonstrate appropriate respect towards wildlife, why would the general public?

The drive for ratings motivates television executives to green-light irresponsible programs like “Eaten Alive.” The goals of conservation and animal welfare have been thrown out the window. It is certainly possible to have programs that are both educational and fun. Broadcasters have shown they can do this with programs such as “Planet Earth” on Discovery and the BBC, “Kingdom of the Apes” on Nat Geo Wild, and “Whale Wars” on Animal Planet. We can do the public — and the environment — a great service by supporting positive examples of conservation and environmental programming. It’s time to give irresponsible programming a red light.

59 Billion Farmed Animals Serve an Insatiable Human World

524958_3325028303604_654533903_n

There are 59 billion animals alive at any one time, farmed for their meat. The world’s domestic cattle weigh 16 times as much as all the wild animals on the planet put together. 60% of the globe’s agricultural land is used for beef production, from growing grain to raising cows. Since the early-20th century, industrial farming and global capitalism have worked hand-in-hand to provide meat at an ever cheaper price. And our appetites, so tempted, have led us to consume more and more animals. In the US, each citizen eats on average 120kg of meat per year. And that’s not even the number one spot. Our insatiable desire for meat has defined how we use our planet. But cheap meat comes at a price. Planet Carnivore gets under the skin of the health problems that over-consumption brings; of modern farming’s destructive use of resources; and of the stretched and strained farms and abattoirs that lead to horsemeat in beef burgers and challenging moral questions about our relationship with our food. Alex Renton’s brilliantly researched, utterly compelling Guardian Short serves up the grisly stories, and also looks at how we are beginning to try and pay the cheap meat bill, from innovative twists on current techniques to cutting edge scientific breakthroughs. – See more at: http://guardianshorts.co.uk/planetcarnivore/#sthash.oURzZciG.dpuf

The Height of Hedonism: Shoppers eating reindeer meat?

The supermarket chain Lidl is offering shoppers the chance to try reindeer meat in the run up to Christmas. Animal rights groups have made their displeasure known, saying other wild animals are being systematically shot to protect supplies for retailers, but it doesn’t seem to have stopped people from giving it a try. Would you eat reindeer meat?

 Would you eat reindeer meat?
    1. Yes, it’s just like any other meat
    2. No! I couldn’t eat Rudolph

Adult Onset Hedonism

264431_455824994498980_1177070538_n

Practically everywhere you look lately are signs of a growing backlash against the progressive vegan movement. It seems people, many who’ve never tried going a day without eating animal products, are tired of being told vegetarian is healthier than flesh-eating and veganism is better still—its carbon footprint being only a fraction of the gargantuan impact of the standard American diet. Plus, vegans have the benefit of a clearer conscience than a person who contributes to animal suffering on a daily basis (assuming said person cares at all about animals). But many are comfortable with their meat addiction and don’t see any reason to ever change. And though they’re still the vast majority and therefore have nothing to fear from the efforts of outnumbered do-gooders, they see it as an attack on their right to be as hedonistic as they so desire and have begun a collective counterattack, just to show ‘em.

A prime example is the subject of a December 4, 2014, article in UT-San Diego. The piece by Michele Parente, cleverly entitled, “Meat trend has some seeing red,”

As in other major cities across the country, San Diego’s current mania for all things meat defies that other growing trend of eating only plant-based food. “I ordered double sausage out of spite,” one diner posted on Facebook, along with a photo of people eating at sidewalk tables, inches away from picketers. “For every animal you don’t eat, I’m going to eat three,” posted another.

Parente started the article out (glibly),

Meat is all the rage in San Diego right now and that’s got some people broiling.

A proliferation of pork-centric places has sprung up all over the county, along with eateries serving up all manner of beef, game, organ and exotic meats. Hungry for a meatier experience? How about a pre-dinner demonstration on how to butcher a whole animal or even the opportunity to slaughter your entrée yourself? And while the current carnivore craze is sating foodies…

What?! Wait a minute. Slow down there and let us un-hipsters catch up; just what the hell is a “foodie,” anyway? It sounds like some kind of baby talk to me. Well, I looked it up and as it turns out that’s not far off. According the Urban Dictionary’s first two definitions, a “foodie” is,

  1. Foodie: A douchebag who likes food.

Douchebag – “I’m a big foodie.”

Non-doucher – “Really? I like food too, but I’m not a tool.”

  1. Foodie: A dumbed-down term used by corporate marketing forces to infantilize and increase consumerism in an increasingly simple-minded American magazine reading audience. The addition of the long “e” sound on the end of a common word is used to create the sensation of being part of a group in isolationist urban society, while also feminizing the term to subconsciously foster submission to ever-present market sources.

Though the terms “gastronome” and “epicure” define the same thing, i.e. a person who enjoys food for pleasure, these words are perceived by the modern American consumer as elitist due to their Latin root forms and polysyllabic pronunciation

If you’ve ever heard the postpartum cries of a newborn unwillingly evicted from the warmth of a watery womb, or witnessed the incessant tantrum of a terrible two-year old, you know that babies can be a bit self-centered. They don’t really seem to care about others around them; they just want whatever they don’t have, and you’d better figure out what that is—and fast. Meanwhile, in a similarly self-absorbed manner, “foodies” believe they are entitled to make the art of stuffing their gullet an “adventure,” eating whatever they want—or whomever they want—the rights or interests of the victims of their carnivorous quests be damned.

Popular pulp among narcissistic “locavores” is new book touting the alleged virtues of “adult onset hunting.” At the height of hedonism, these nouveau-savage self-actualizers not only find fulfillment in consuming wild animals but also in all forms of related carnage, including (but not limited to) stalking, shooting, snuffing out, dismembering and butchering them first.

Parente’s article continues,

…a small group of animal-rights activists holding “Meat is Murder” signs has been picketing S&M Sausage & Meat each week since it opened in Hillcrest about a month ago.

A recent DIY butchery event, provocatively called Death For Food, was canceled after an online campaign launched by lawyer and seal defender Bryan Pease attracted about 2,500 protesters and threats of a potential boycott against Suzie’s Farm, where the farm-to-guillotine-to-table dinner was scheduled to be held.

The restaurant, whose logo is a hog on its back, feet in the air and apple in the mouth, is an unabashed haven for adventurous meat eaters, offering everything from kangaroo hotlinks to alligator-antelope Andouille sausage and fried pig ears. “Anything we can find that used to be breathing… Its customers are equally unapologetic.

“The audience is quite frankly demanding and wants to be part of the experience,” Freeman said. “They want the thrill and adventure of dining they get with whole-animal (butchery).” “…it gives you an experience.”

The otherwise nauseating article does include a good quote from Stephanie Shaw, a PETA spokeswoman, that sums up the vegan message in a nutshell.

“Any restaurant that serves meat, whether it’s farm to table, whole-animal butchers or McDonald’s … is supporting the violent and untimely or unnecessary death of an animal that wanted to live,” Shaw said. “With every meal, we have the opportunity to choose cruelty or kindness.”

Poll: Should NYC Horse-Drawn Carriages Be Banned?

Wild horse photo copyright Jim Roberson

Most New York City Council members remain largely undecided about a possible ban of the horse-drawn carriages of Central Park.

While New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is pushing ahead with his campaign promise to ban the carriages, the move also pits him against the labor unions that helped propel him to office.

The issue is a highly contested one. The mayor has supporters in animal-rights groups on one side, and on the other are the city’s unions, which have expressed concerns about job losses if the horses are banned.

About 350 workers are employed by the carriage industry, which is represented by the Teamsters Local 553.

What’s your take on horse-drawn carriages in Central Park? Vote for the horses here:
