Lisa Lange, PETA Senior Vice President: “Doris Day was a silver screen and singing legend, but PETA will always remember her for her most important role: animal champion. She personally rescued, fostered, and found loving homes for hundreds of animals; founded an organization to stop animal homelessness through spaying and neutering; and formed the Doris Day Animal League, which joined PETA in opposing cruel chemical tests on animals. Day was a warm, kind, generous person, and she will be missed by all of us here at PETA.”

Paul McCartney: “So sad to hear of Doris Day passing away. She was a true star in more ways than one. I had the privilege of hanging out with her on a few occasions. Visiting her in her Californian home was like going to an animal sanctuary where her many dogs were taken care of in splendid style. She had a heart of gold and was a very funny lady who I shared many laughs with. Her films like ‘Calamity Jane’, ‘Move Over, Darling’ and many others were all incredible and her acting and singing always hit the mark. I will miss her but will always remember her twinkling smile and infectious laugh as well as the many great songs and movies she gave us. God bless Doris.”

Doris Day was kind and decent, onscreen and off; she maintained her friendship with Rock Hudson after his AIDS diagnosis, in a climate of fear and abandonment – one of his last appearances was on a TV show with her. Here they are in younger days:

PETA’s Secret Weapon In Fur Ban Fight: A Coyote Trap

The animal-rights group is showing lawmakers how brutal the traps are as the City Council considers a ban on fur sales.

By Noah Manskar, Patch Staff |  |
NEW YORK — Hooded faces ringed with fur seem to cross every New York City block in the winter months as Canada Goose parkas have grown popular. But the high-end outerwear’s trim comes from coyotes, which often find themselves caught in small but powerful metal traps, animal rights activists say.

As the City Council considers banning fur sales, Dan Mathews, a senior vice president at People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, has been snapping pencils with one of those traps to show lawmakers just how brutal the fur trade is.

“Some of the shards of the pencil fly eight feet across the room and they imagine that being an animal’s bone — it puts a visceral face on a talking point,” said Mathews, who has met over the last several weeks with half a dozen Council members, including Speaker Corey Johnson.

The trap is a powerful visual aid in PETA’s quest to make New York the nation’s largest city to ban fur sales, according to Mathews, who is also demonstrating it for fashion designers and model agencies ahead of a May 15 hearing on the Council bill.

PETA is training its activists to show the traps off more widely and producing a video featuring the designer Stella McCartney to educate consumers about them, Mathews said.

“People have commented that it looks like something out of a medieval torture museum,” Mathews said. “And I think when people realize that there are thousands of these in use today capturing animals — not just coyotes but all sorts of wildlife and family dogs — it becomes a very simple issue.”

The so-called leghold trap Mathews demonstrated for Patch on Thursday snapped in the blink of an eye. Food is used to lure coyotes to the devices, which go for as little as $10 online. But they inadvertently capture other creatures such as dogs, cats, songbirds and owls — which trappers call “trash animals,” Mathews said.

New York State is home to about 10,000 trappers. Leghold traps are used throughout the state, including just north of the city in Westchester County, Mathews said.

State law bans leg-gripping traps with teeth and requires trappers in most parts of the state to visit their traps every 24 hours. But such rules are hard to enforce, as only the trappers generally know where the traps are set, Mathews said.

Mathews expects a tough fight over the proposed fur ban despite Johnson’s support for it. The bill would bar retailers from selling fur apparel and fine those who get caught.

Johnson has argued the measure would help protect animals. But longtime Manhattan furrier Jerry Sorbara, whose store is on West 32nd Street, says it could put him out of business.

“It’s gonna escalate to that you cannot even walk in the street and they come and see what kind of shoes you (are) wearing, and they will kill you if you wear something that is not right,” said Sorbara, 80, who opened his custom fur business in 1975. “I think it’s really insane what they’re doing.”

While Johnson’s bill would let merchants sell used fur items, Sorbara said only “a handful” of people sell used fur coats. The ban could also hurt parts of the fashion industry that make other components of fur garments such as buttons and linings, he said.

Sorbara said he uses furs from farm-raised minks, chinchillas and sables — not trapped animals. He’s even made a miniature mink coat for a customer’s dog.

“You mean to say … that we don’t love animals? Are you kidding me?” Sorbara said.

Shocking Video of Deer Baiting, Netting Unveiled—Ask City to Halt Terror Trapping

https://www.peta.org/action/action-alerts/shocking-video-deer-baiting-netting/https://www.peta.org/action/action-alerts/shocking-video-deer-baiting-netting/

Citizen Advocates for Lakeway Deer (CALD)—a grassroots organization of residents of Lakeway, Texas—has unveiled never-before-seen video footage of the city’s handling of so-called “surplus” deer. The footage exposes for the first time how the animals, who are lured into traps, are netted, are pinned to the ground, have their antlers sawed off, and are then hauled upside down into a trailer. They’re ultimately transported to slaughter.

After being driven 80 miles, the animals are shot in the head and butchered.

A Lakewood police detective admitted that “any animal that gets a net dropped on ’em … gets its horns cut off … gets picked up and put in a trailer upside down, that’s traumatized, you know?”

One trapped deer had previously been shot with an arrow. He lay bleeding, caught in the netting. Instead of ending the wounded deer’s suffering, the workers sawed off his antlers and dragged him away to the trailer.

Lakeway spent more than $28,000 in 2013–14 on this traumatizing practice, even though trapping is an ineffective method of wildlife control. Killing backfires because the resultant spike in the food supply accelerates breeding among survivors and newcomers. Even the detective admitted, “I’ve seen this going on for 10 years, and Lakeway is still covered with deer. It’s … not going to eliminate ’em, you know.”

And deer families are torn apart, with orphaned young left to starve. Despite widespread opposition, the city has continued with this year’s trapping program.

You Can Help Stop This!
CALD has collected the signatures of more than 1,000 Lakeway residents who are calling on the city to end the deer-trapping program, conduct a census of the deer population, and implement humane means of managing wildlife issues.

Please urge Lakeway officials to halt the trapping and slaughter of deer, and share these humane deer-control tips with them.

DES MOINES, Wash. – The German Shepherd who was shot three times while protecting his owner from a burglary at their home in Des Moines last month was honored by PETA on Tuesday.

The dog named Rex was given the agency’s Heroic Dog Award for, “going above and beyond at great personal risk to protect his beloved family,” according to PETA.

Rex was also reunited with Des Moines Police Department Animal Control Officer Jan Magnuson, who helped save his life.

“It makes me feel good that a lot of people care for my dog,” said his 16-year-old Javier Mercado.

PETA presents Rex with hero dog award. Rex was shot protecting his family during an armed home invasion. He is expected to make a full recovery

Mercado was home alone when someone broke into their home on February 21. He called 911 and hid in a closet while Rex ran after the burglars to defend his home.

His family said Rex was shot three times at the burglars got away.

Animal Control Officer Magnuson then rushed Rex to an emergency veterinary hospital.

After undergoing surgery, he’s now recovering at home.

“Rex is happy. I’m happy,” said Mercado. “He looks good to me, he’s running, jumping, playing.”

But, Rex still has about two more months of recovery until he’ll be ready for his daily walks again.

“I’m very happy just to see how much support our family and Rex, especially has been getting,” said Mercado’s mother, Julia Cadena.

Along with the award, Rex received a get well care package from PETA full of treats and toys.

PETA is also offering a $5,000 reward to find the burglars who shot Rex.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Des Moines Police Department at 206-878-3301.

Gofundme account has raised more than $62,000 towards Rex’s veterinary bills.
