Don’t Underestimate Trump’s Danger — Even on the Cusp of Defeat

It ain’t over, not quite, but the finish line for the 2020 presidential election is a few short strides away, and matters are looking grim for The Donald.

As of this morning, the count in the state of Georgia has flipped in favor of former Vice President Joe Biden, an astonishing feat of history. It’s a sliver of proof that the South, a huge brick in the GOP’s mighty red state wall, may be changing right along with everything else, thanks to the strength of grassroots organizing (and particularly the efforts of Stacey Abrams’s Fair Fight and other groups confronting racist voter suppression).

Trump pulled a mini-surge in Arizona over the last couple of days, but it appears to be falling short of knocking Biden out of the lead in that state. Biden also maintains a narrow lead in Nevada, while Trump holds a small lead in North Carolina.

Pennsylvania, however, is the ballgame. Before the Democrat-heavy mail-in vote was counted, Trump led in the Keystone State by as much as 700,000 votes. As the week wore on and those mailed votes were tabulated, that mighty lead melted to almost nothing. And at 8:52 am this morning, CNN reported that Pennsylvania had flipped to Biden by a count of more than 5,000 votes. That margin continues to grow by the hour, and at this point, it is only a matter of time.

The Electoral College (EC) count stands at 253 for Biden and 214 for Trump. Pennsylvania’s 20 EC votes are more than enough to push Biden over the top, with Georgia, Arizona and Nevada adding gravy to the potatoes.

We’re all still going to be here for a while. Trump has made it clear that he will not concede no matter the outcome — though it’s important to keep in mind there is no constitutional requirement for a concession to take place. He has insisted on peddling a stolen-election conspiracy theory too wild even for Twitter to stomach.

“I easily WIN the Presidency of the United States with LEGAL VOTES CAST,” Trump shriek-tweeted at 2:22 am. “The OBSERVERS were not allowed, in any way, shape, or form, to do their job and therefore, votes accepted during this period must be determined to be ILLEGAL VOTES. U.S. Supreme Court should decide!” Moments later, Twitter labeled the tweet as “misleading.”

Behind the sweaty walls of Trump’s campaign headquarters, all is chaos. “Senior White House and Trump campaign officials are complaining bitterly about poor internal communication, blaming colleagues, pondering what jobs they might try to get next year, and lashing out at their new enemy: Fox News,” reports Axios.

Recall: The Trump campaign is pissed at Fox for calling Arizona perhaps a shade too early, as if that call is the reason for the math behind all those mailed-in votes in Pennsylvania and Georgia. As for the legal recourse Trump is seeking in several states, well: “Some advisers are also skeptical that the campaign’s lawsuits will do anything to change the vote count,” reports USA Today.Trump has been flipping lit matches into a cask of gunpowder for months now. One of them could catch fire any moment now.

“Skeptical” is a kind euphemism. These lawsuits are garbage on the wing, and anyone with a stitch of legal sense knows it. Ben Ginsburg, maybe the top GOP election lawyer, is the Darth Vader of politics in the courtroom. He was at the center of the Bush campaign’s ruthlessly successful 2000 Florida fight, represents the campaign PACs of the most powerful Republicans in Congress, and was until recently a partner at the powerhouse Washington, D.C., law firm Jones Day.

“It’s difficult to see the long-term winning strategy behind these lawsuits,” Ginsburg told Axios regarding Trump’s legal strategy. “To mix metaphors, it looks like throwing the kitchen sink at the wall and see what sticks.”

Ouch.

The “illegal” mailed-in votes arguments are belied by what went down in Ohio. All the other states counted the in-person votes first, making it seem as if Trump had this massive lead because more Democrats than Republicans voted by mail this time. In Ohio, they did the opposite and counted the mailed-in votes first. You may recall seeing Biden ahead in Ohio by more than 300,000 votes on Tuesday; it was positively surreal.

Soon enough, however, they got to the in-person votes, reality returned to the Buckeye State, and Trump won Ohio handily as expected. No one in the Biden camp complained, because they bothered to understand how the process was going to work this year.

It ain’t over, and the shouting/tantrum portion of this exercise will likely continue long after January 20, 2021, comes and goes. But math is math, and it seems farfetched to believe a Trump legal team comprised of Rudy Giuliani, Corey Lewandowski and the last three people Trump hasn’t fired yet have the horses to get it done in a courtroom. Ginsburg and the other legal heavies like James Baker are sitting this one out.

“What will Trump do now?” is the last, and most pressing question of the hour. Will he signal to his followers that the time for violence has come? Will they make that decision by themselves? On the other hand, will any Republicans finally stand up and shout Trump down if he refuses to accept the inevitable? Will Trump’s last act in office be the final obliteration of the Republican Party?

Trump has been flipping lit matches at an open cask of gunpowder for years now. The next one could drop in at any moment, which is why Joe Biden suddenly has a whole crowd of new, heavily armed friends in black suits with wires in their ears.

Yeah, no, not over yet. Not with this guy.

Donald Trump Jr. on Thursday fired off a tweet calling for his dad to wage “total war over the election” — while parroting the same allegations of voter fraud that his father has used to explain away his dwindling hopes of staying in the White House.

Twitter quickly hid the message from view for spreading false information about the election.

Trump Jr., who has a long history of using Twitter to fuel conspiracy theories, hit the send button amid a flurry of lawsuits filed by his father’s campaign to turn the election — including one in Pennsylvania that sought to stop vote-counting.

“The best thing for America’s future is for @realDonaldTrump to go to total war over this election to expose all of the fraud, cheating, dead/no longer in state voters, that has been going on for far too long,” Trump Jr. wrote, repeating several conspiracy theories about the election and seemingly calling for Americans to go to war with one another.

“It’s time to clean up this mess & stop looking like a banana republic!” he added.

Twitter flagged the tweet minutes after it was posted for violating its “Civic integrity policy.”

A number of key battleground states have not been called since the 2020 presidential election wrapped Tuesday night, including Pennsylvania and Georgia, which Trump needs to carry to get to the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency.

His campaign has filed a number of lawsuits in both states, including one in Chatham County, Georgia, which was tossed by a judge Thursday.

How Trump and Biden can win based on where the election stands now

  • As of 5 a.m. ET on Thursday, Democratic nominee Joe Biden had a more flexible path to securing the 270 electoral votes needed to win than President Donald Trump.
  • However, the seats Biden could win to put him over the top — Arizona, Wisconsin, Georgia, Nevada, and Pennsylvania — are still counting their ballots.
  • Trump’s path is narrower, but he is still in it.
  • Visit Business Insider’s homepage for more stories.

In the early hours of Thursday morning, the 2020 US presidential race still did not have a clear winner, with races tightening as counts continue in crucial states.

Democratic nominee Joe Biden maintains a lead, though both he and President Donald Trump are in limbo early and absentee votes are tallied.

As of 5 a.m. ET on Thursday, Biden had secured 253 electoral votes, while Trump had 214. You can follow Insider’s live election results coverage here.

Biden, the former vice president, has held on to all the states that Hillary Clinton won in 2016, and also won Michigan and Wisconsin, two key battleground seats that Trump turned red in 2016.

Trump is now likely to take North Carolina and Alaska, but other key states — Pennsylvania, Nevada, Arizona, and Georgia — are less clear.

Which campaign will reach the required 270 electoral votes hinges on the results in those remaining states.

Here’s how Biden can get the extra 17 or more votes to reach 270:

  • He wins Pennsylvania (20 votes).
  • He wins Arizona and Nevada (11 + 6 votes).
  • He wins Arizona and North Carolina (11 + 15 votes).
  • He wins Georgia and Arizona (16 + 11 votes).
  • He wins Georgia and Nevada (16 + 6 votes).
  • He wins Georgia and North Carolina (16 + 15 votes).
  • He wins Nevada and North Carolina (6 + 15 votes).

(None of the above include Alaska, which is very likely to go to Trump.)

Here’s how Trump can get the extra 56 votes to reach 270:

  • He wins Pennsylvania, Arizona, North Carolina, and Georgia (20 + 11 + 15 + 16 votes).
  • He wins Pennsylvania, Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, and Alaska (20 + 11 +16 + 6 + 3 votes).

There is also a scenario which gives Trump 269 votes — enough for a tie.

  • He wins Pennsylvania, Arizona, North Carolina, Nevada, and Alaska (20 + 11 + 15 + 6 +3 votes).

The Associated Press and Fox news both called Arizona for Biden, but as of early Thursday the race was still too close to call based on the projection by Decision Desk HQ, which is informing Insider’s election coverage.

As of early on Thursday morning, Biden led Trump 50.49% to 48.14% in the state.

In Georgia, Trump had a narrow lead of less than half a point, or roughly 23,000 votes, as of early on Thursday.

Decision Desk HQ called Wisconsin for Biden on Wednesday afternoon, when he was ahead by around 20,000 votes. The Trump campaign signaled on Wednesday that it would call for a recount in Wisconsin, though past recounts in the state have only affected a few hundred votes.

Trump’s campaign also filed a lawsuit in Michigan to stop counting there, claiming it had been denied  “meaningful access” to watch the opening of ballots and the tally.

If the race came down Pennsylvania, that would likely be the most prolonged result in terms of vote counting.

The president signaled early Wednesday that Pennsylvania could be the center of a legal battle over which ballots ultimately get counted. However, as election experts have noted, it can be very difficult to get ballots discounted.

Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court ruled that election officials could receive and count ballots until November 6 as long as they were postmarked by Election Day. Republicans requested a stay from the US Supreme Court that would have blocked the state court’s ruling.

But the US Supreme Court was deadlocked at 4-4, leaving the lower court’s ruling in place. Justices Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, Clarence Thomas, and Samuel Alito voted to grant Republicans’ request, while Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Stephen Breyer, Elena Kagan, and Sonia Sotomayor dissented.

Justice Amy Coney Barrett declined to participate in the case “because of the need for a prompt resolution of it and because she has not had time to fully review the parties’ filings,” the court said in a statement. However, Barrett has not recused herself, meaning she could still be the decisive fifth opinion.Read the original article on Business Insider

Eric Trump was busted on Wednesday for tweeting a fake viral video of what he claimed was someone burning dozens of ballots cast in favor of his father, President Donald Trump.

As the final result of the 2020 election remained undecided, the president’s son retweeted a video that purported to show a man torching 80 ballots for Trump in Virginia Beach, Virginia.https://platform.twitter.com/embed/index.html?creatorScreenName=Lee_Moran&dnt=true&embedId=twitter-widget-0&frame=false&hideCard=false&hideThread=false&id=1324088311644856327&lang=en&origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.yahoo.com%2Fhuffpost%2Feric-trump-fake-ballot-burning-video-074218729.html&siteScreenName=Yahoo&theme=light&widgetsVersion=ed20a2b%3A1601588405575&width=550px

The city of Virginia Beach, however, debunked Eric Trump’s post.

“Those were sample ballots,” the city responded to Trump on Twitter.https://platform.twitter.com/embed/index.html?creatorScreenName=Lee_Moran&dnt=true&embedId=twitter-widget-1&frame=false&hideCard=false&hideThread=false&id=1324101214477393922&lang=en&origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.yahoo.com%2Fhuffpost%2Feric-trump-fake-ballot-burning-video-074218729.html&siteScreenName=Yahoo&theme=light&widgetsVersion=ed20a2b%3A1601588405575&width=550px

“A concerned citizen shared a video with us that ostensibly shows someone burning ballots,” the city said in a statement on its website. “They are NOT official ballots, they are sample ballots.”

Officials noted “the absence of the bar code markings that are on all official ballots” in a screenshot from the video.

“Fire investigators are looking into the illegal burning,” the city added.

The account that originally posted the clip has now been suspended.

Eric Trump, who late Wednesday falsely claimed that his father had already won Pennsylvania, has not deleted his own tweet.

The moment every Donald Trump opponent has been waiting for is at hand: Joe Biden seems to be taking the lead. So why am I not happy?

I am certainly relieved. A Biden victory would be an infinitely better result than a Trump win. If Trump were to maintain power, our child-king would be unfettered by bothersome laws and institutions. The United States would begin its last days as a democracy, finally stepping over the ledge into authoritarianism.

Discover Atlantic Planet, a new section devoted to climate change and the ways it will reshape our worldExplore

A win for Biden would forestall that terrible possibility.

But no matter how this election concludes, America is now a different country. Nearly half of the voters have seen Trump in all of his splendor—his infantile tirades, his disastrous and lethal policies, his contempt for democracy in all its forms—and they decided that they wanted more of it. His voters can no longer hide behind excuses about the corruption of Hillary Clinton or their willingness to take a chance on an unproven political novice. They cannot feign ignorance about how Trump would rule. They know, and they have embraced him.

Sadly, the voters who said in 2016 that they chose Trump because they thought he was “just like them” turned out to be right. Now, by picking him again, those voters are showing that they are just like him: angry, spoiled, racially resentful, aggrieved, and willing to die rather than ever admit that they were wrong.

MORE BY THIS WRITER

To be clear, I never expected a Biden landslide in a country as polarized as the United States. I was a wet blanket even among my Never Trump comrades, holding out only the modest hope that Biden would recapture the states Clinton lost in 2016, and possibly flip Arizona. But I expected the margins in all of those states—and especially in Biden’s birth state of Pennsylvania—to be higher. I suspected that Biden had no real chance in places such as Texas or Georgia or even North Carolina, all states in the Trumpist grip.

Nor was I among the progressives who believed America would repudiate Trump’s policies. For one thing, I am a conservative—and I know my former tribe. Trump voters don’t care about policy. They didn’t care about it in 2016, and they don’t care about it now. The party of national security, fiscal austerity, and personal responsibility supports a president who is in the pocket of the Russians, has exploded the national deficit, and refuses to take responsibility for anything. I had hoped, at the least, that people who once insisted on the importance of presidential character would vote for basic decency after living under the most indecent president in American history.

It’s clear now that far too many of Trump’s voters don’t care about policy, decency, or saving our democracy. They care about power. Although Trump appears to have received a small uptick in votes from Black men and Latinos, the overwhelming share of his supporters are white. The politics of cultural resentment, the obsessions of white anxiety, are so intense that his voters are determined not only to preserve minority rule but to leave a dangerous sociopath in the Oval Office. Even the candidacy of a man who was both a political centrist and a decent human being could not overcome this sullen commitment to authoritarianism.

My greatest fear, aside from an eventual Trump victory over the coming days, is that no matter the outcome, both parties will rush to draw the wrong lesson from this close election. The Republicans will conclude that just a bit more overt racism (but less tweeting about it) will carry the day the next time. They will see the exit polls that called for a “strong national leader,” and they will replace the childish and whiny Trump with someone who projects even more authoritarian determination. They will latch on to the charge that democracy is a rigged game, and they will openly despise its rules even more than Trump has.

The Democrats, for their part, might look at this near-death experience, and, as they sometimes have in the past, conclude that moving left, including more talk of socialism and more social-justice activism is just the tonic they’ll need to shore up their coalition. Some Democrats tend to believe that almost every election confirms the need to lurch to the left, when in fact the 2020 election should be a reminder that Trump would have beaten anyone left of Biden.https://e2b84f66dd4fd3211c1953d32ee4b25b.safeframe.googlesyndication.com/safeframe/1-0-37/html/container.htmlhttps://e2b84f66dd4fd3211c1953d32ee4b25b.safeframe.googlesyndication.com/safeframe/1-0-37/html/container.html

If the vote plays out as it seems it will at this point, Biden will become our 46th president. But Americans can take very little pride in the overall vote and what it reveals about nearly half of our electorate.

American voters, including those who didn’t show up or who voted third-party in 2016, are now like drunks who have been bailed out of jail in the morning, full of relief as their lawyers explain that the police aren’t pressing charges. If Biden wins, we will have a second chance to keep our democracy intact. Some of us will have a moment of clarity. Most of us will just want to go home, throw up, change our clothes, and hope for the best.

But many millions, eyes dimming and livers failing, are still reaching for the bottle.

Trump’s 2 AM tirade against democracy was what he planned all along

For everyone still asking “how can it be so close,” the answer is: it’s not. Based on current projections, Joe Biden will win the White House with a greater popular vote margin than Hillary Clinton and somewhere north of 300 electoral votes. In any other cycle, we might not call that a blowout, but it would certainly be a solid win.

If your question is “how is it possible Donald Trump is seen as a viable alternate in the first place?” the answer is: I don’t know.

But one thing that’s exceptionally clear on the day after the election, is that while Biden came out late in the evening to tell the nation, correctly, to have patience and trust in the process, Trump stepped up at 2 AM to do the opposite. Trump’s false claim of victory, and his attempt to murder the election in mid vote, may be the most dangerous statement Trump has ever made. And that’s saying a lot, for Mr. Maybe We Can Inject Bleach.

Stepping in front of the cameras in the early hours, Trump falsely claimed both that Democrats were trying to steal the election, and that he had already won the election. Repeatedly during his tirade Trump made it seem that people were still voting after the polls closed, rather than simply counting the votes that had already been made. And Trump reached straight for his big gun, saying that he intended to go to the Supreme Court, though he gave no clue on what basis or through what mechanism he would seek to appeal … democracy.

No one sitting through Tuesday evening, or looking at where things stand on Wednesday morning, should be surprised. This is exactly the scenario that was predicted over and over.

Trump and other Republicans worked hard to throw as many monkey wrenches into the works as they could. They’ve already launched, lost, appealed, and tried again on everything from halting drive-up voting locations, to throwing out whole boxes of mail-in votes. This is literally the effort Trump put underway months ago. It’s the reason he employed DeJoy to wreck the Post Office, and the reason he was so determined to seat Amy Coney Barrett before the election.

Trump thought he would lose, and set up a process to make it seem like he hadn’t. Now he’s executing that plan. On Wednesday morning, that plan looked like Trump standing in front of a hundred maskless supporters to lie about winning, call counting the vote “stealing,” and make false claims of fraud.

“To me, this is a very sad moment,” said Trump. He also said that it was an embarrassment to the nation. On those two points, Trump is right. Though not for the reasons he believes.

The voting has stopped. The counting will continue.  Trump will keep complaining. Because this has been his plan all along.

President Donald Trump criticized the FBI on Sunday for announcing an investigation into some of his supporters in Texas for harassing and endangering the lives of passengers on a Joe Biden campaign bus last week — an action that may have been inspired in part by the president’s own son just a couple of days prior.

Video on social media showed motorists, many with Trump 2020 flags or other insignia demonstrating their support for the president, surrounding a Biden for president campaign bus on a Texas interstate highway on Friday. The drivers shouted profanities toward the bus riders and attempted to slow the bus down to a complete stop.

The bus ended up slowing to 20 miles per hour at one point on the highway. Other videos shared online revealed more violent behavior, including a Trump-aligned pickup truck appearing to ram itself into the side of a vehicle that was escorting the Biden bus.

After the video appeared on social media, the president tweeted out his support for his supporters who surrounded the bus, displaying an edited video that omitted their more violent acts. “I LOVE TEXAS!” Trump said on Twitter Saturday.

Later, the FBI announced that it was looking into the matter.

“FBI San Antonio is aware of the incident and investigating,” FBI spokesperson Michelle Lee said to CNN.

The announcement prompted the president to complain on Sunday about the fact that an inquiry into his violent supporters had been opened.

“In my opinion, these patriots did nothing wrong,” Trump said, suggesting that the FBI should look into antifa instead.

At several points during his presidency, Trump has used his bully pulpit to criticize a number of institutions, including political opponents and the media, in a manner that has oftentimes inspired his backers to act violently. It’s possible, however, that this time around, Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., inspired his father’s supporters to behave maliciously.

Days before the apparent attack on the Biden bus took place, Trump Jr. shared a video message to the president’s supporters in Texas, encouraging them to harass a planned event involving Biden’s vice presidential running-mate, Kamala Harris.

“It’d be great if you guys would all get together, head down to McAllen and give Kamala Harris a nice Trump train welcome,” Trump Jr. said in the message published on Wednesday.https://platform.twitter.com/embed/index.html?creatorScreenName=truthout&dnt=true&embedId=twitter-widget-1&frame=false&hideCard=false&hideThread=false&id=1321543980165857283&lang=en&origin=https%3A%2F%2Ftruthout.org%2Farticles%2Fdon-jr-told-dads-supporters-have-fun-with-biden-campaign-before-bus-incident%2F&siteScreenName=truthout&theme=light&widgetsVersion=ed20a2b%3A1601588405575&width=500px

“Get out there, have some fun. Get out there, guys,” he added.

Harris or Biden were not onboard the bus during the apparent attack, but Democratic candidates running in local races were riding on it, including former state lawmaker Wendy Davis, who is running for a U.S. House seat in Texas. After the dangerous provocation on the highway unfolded, Davis and others on the bus canceled their planned campaign event due to safety concerns.

Neither Biden nor Harris had been on the bus on the time, however the scenario rapidly devolved to the purpose the place police had been known as to escort it to its subsequent vacation spot. The actions of the gun-waving pro-Trump drivers each on the interstate and in Austin had been thought-about harmful sufficient to cancel two subsequent Democratic rallies. For these accustomed to the anti-civil rights thuggery of previous eras, particularly within the South, the “Trump Prepare” was simply recognizable for what it was: an try to intimidate the opposition into fleeing, both through the specter of mob violence or violence itself.

The orange fascist himself was ecstatic on the show, each on Twitter and, now, in his rallies.

It seems Trump’s giddy thrill at inflicting automobile accidents for Expensive Chief was not the aspirational dictator’s solely hyperlink to the intimidation. A number of days previous to the Texas encounter, Donald Trump Jr. explicitly known as out to these drivers in an try to make the incident occur.

In another of his possibly cocaine-tinged videos promoting his father, Trump Jr. made the request:

“It’d be nice if you happen to guys would all get collectively, head right down to McAllen and provides Kamala Harris a pleasant Trump Prepare welcome. Get on the market, have some enjoyable, get pleasure from it.”

It’s uncommon, to say the least, for an American president or his offspring to advertise such behaviors. The tinpot Trump clan has confirmed keen and desirous to reward each intimidation and violence on behalf of Chief Dearest, nevertheless, and gun-waving pickup-truck-based terrorism is (ahem) actually on model for the dumbest of violent American actions.

It serves as warning as effectively. The Trump “motion,” if it may be known as that, is an authoritarian-premised cult of character extra beholden to its white nationalist agenda than to democracy itself. There could also be related makes an attempt to “encompass” polling websites on Election Day. If Trump loses, it’s nearly assured that some inside his base will use it to justify violence and terrorism.

We’re effectively previous the purpose the place deluded, conspiracy-obsessed Fox Information-watching white nationalists might be ignored with out consequence; our greatest hope is that the American folks converse out so forcefully with their votes as to politically bury its Republican enablers—completely.

On Friday, a Trump-and-confederate-flag waving “Trump Train” of Texas pickup trucks intercepted the Biden-Harris campaign bus as it traveled on Interstate 35, headed to Austin, Texas, for a planned rally. The pro-Trump drivers used their vehicles to surround and slow the bus, and appeared to cause at least one intentional accident when one hit the vehicle of a Biden-Harris staffer closely following the bus.

On Mobilize America, there are hundreds of campaigns and local Democratic parties organizing (mostly virtual) get-out-the-vote activities. Find one near you, and connect with members of your community while doing work to turn out the Democratic vote!

Neither Biden nor Harris were on the bus at the time, but the situation quickly devolved to the point where police were called to escort it to its next destination. The actions of the gun-waving pro-Trump drivers both on the interstate and in Austin were considered dangerous enough to cancel two subsequent Democratic rallies. For those familiar with the anti-civil rights thuggery of past eras, especially in the South, the “Trump Train” was easily recognizable for what it was: an attempt to intimidate the opposition into fleeing, either via the threat of mob violence or violence itself.

The orange fascist himself was ecstatic at the display, both on Twitter and, now, in his rallies.https://platform.twitter.com/embed/index.html?dnt=false&embedId=twitter-widget-0&frame=false&hideCard=false&hideThread=false&id=1322945006647345160&lang=en&origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.dailykos.com%2Fstory%2F2020%2F11%2F1%2F1991583%2F-Trump-Jr-pushed-for-Trump-supporters-to-intercept-Biden-bus-Trump-Sr-praised-them-afterwards&siteScreenName=dailykos&theme=light&widgetsVersion=ed20a2b%3A1601588405575&width=550px

It turns out Trump’s giddy thrill at causing car accidents for Dear Leader was not the aspirational dictator’s only link to the intimidation. Several days prior to the Texas encounter, Donald Trump Jr. explicitly called out to those drivers in an attempt to make the incident happen.

In another of his possibly cocaine-tinged videos promoting his father, Trump Jr. made the request:

“It’d be great if you guys would all get together, head down to McAllen and give Kamala Harris a nice Trump Train welcome. Get out there, have some fun, enjoy it.”

It is unusual, to say the least, for an American president or his offspring to promote such behaviors. The tinpot Trump clan has proven willing and eager to praise both intimidation and violence on behalf of Leader Dearest, however, and gun-waving pickup-truck-based terrorism is (ahem) certainly on brand for the dumbest of violent American movements.

It serves as warning as well. The Trump “movement,” if it can be called that, is an authoritarian-premised cult of personality more beholden to its white nationalist agenda than to democracy itself. There may be similar attempts to “surround” polling sites on Election Day. If Trump loses, it is almost assured that some within his base will use it to justify violence and terrorism.

We are well past the point where deluded, conspiracy-obsessed Fox News-watching white nationalists can be ignored without consequence; our best hope is that the American people speak out so forcefully with their votes as to politically bury its Republican enablers—permanently.Sunday, Nov 1, 2020 · 10:55:42 AM PST · Hunter

Donald Trump Jr posed in front of a “Don Jr 2024” sign in Nevada on Saturday, posted the picture online and waited for “the lib heads to explode”.

“Hahahahaha,” wrote the president’s oldest son, on Instagram. “Oh boy. This was a sign up at the Fallon Nevada Livestock Auction. This will make the lib heads explode.” (“Lib” being short for liberal.)

“To whomever made that thanks for the compliment … but let’s get through 2020 with a big win first!!!!!”

Though Nevada went for Hillary Clinton in 2016 and Joe Biden leads Donald Trump Sr there this year, it is considered a swing state. Democratic voters are concentrated in Las Vegas and its suburbs while Republicans can be found in more rural areas.

Trump Jr, 42, is best known as an internet provocateur who shares both his father’s brashness and his inclination for sharing disinformation.Advertisementhttps://tpc.googlesyndication.com/safeframe/1-0-37/html/container.html

Since his father won the White House he has not been involved in policy like his sister, Ivanka, and her husband, Jared Kushner, or as active in running the Trump Organization as his brother, Eric. He also has two half-siblings, Tiffany and Barron.

But Don Jr does seem to be the Trump offspring most inclined to politics and he has turned into a valuable campaign surrogate with a knack for communicating with the president’s base.

“Don Jr represents the emotional center of the Maga universe,” Jason Miller, a senior advisor on Trump’s campaign, told the New York Times, using an acronym for “Make America Great Again”, a Trump slogan.

Trump Jr has only joked about running for office but he – and his sister – have registered strongly in polls regarding notional Republican candidates for 2024, whether to succeed his father or to attempt to deny Joe Biden a second term.

The president’s oldest son has also published two books with political themes, seeing the first top bestseller lists, if with help from the party, and suffering embarrassment over a mistake on the cover of the second.

A Vice reporter recently suggested that Pennsylvania Republicans were floating the idea of Trump Jr replacing Pat Toomey, a Republican senator who has announced he will retire. Trump Jr himself has not spoken about the Pennsylvania seat.

Speaking to the Guardian this week, Rick Wilson, a former Republican consultant and member of the anti-Trump Lincoln Project, called Trump Jr “a post-Republican Republican … there only to engage in that performative dickery that is lib-owning in the Trump world. It is a political performance art to show your contempt for norms, institutions and education.”

Wilson went on to explain why, should Trump Jr actually consider a run for office, that might be an asset.

“It has become the ideological underpinning of the GOP. There’s no party of ideas any longer. There’s no there there except for sort of the screeching fury of Trumpism.”
