A Missouri turkey hunter Telechecks her adult gobbler using MDC's MO Hunting mobile app following a successful public land hunt.

Missouri’s spring turkey hunting season concluded Sunday. In four months, local archers will again be seeking gobblers for what they hope is a robust fall season.

Neighboring Kansas won’t have that luxury.

The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parksrecently announced that its fall season will be canceled on account of a dwindling turkey population, the firsttime Kansas has canceled a season in the modern turkey-restoration era.

Kansas wildlife officials hope that cutting the fall season for the foreseeable future will help boost the population, which recently hit a 15-year low. Fall turkey season hunting participation in Kansas has also been reportedly low.

Kansas also imposed a one-turkey bag limit for the spring of 2024, similar to neighboring states Oklahoma and Nebraska, which also imposed stricter bag limits due to declining turkey populations.

  • A mink farm in Spain is the site of concerning research regarding thespread of avian influenza.
  • Researchers believe the bird flu was transmitted across minks in the farm—a troubling mammal-to-mammal spread.
  • Theoutbreakat the mink farm opens a new worry for health researchers.

Last fall, on a mink farm in Spain, H5N1 (avian influenza) likely spread across the animals. The outbreak resulted in the death or culling of the entire group of 50,000 minks.

Why should you care? Because it may have marked the first known case of mammal-to-mammal transmission of the deadly virus known as the bird flu, according to a new study. And that doesn’t portend anything good for humans.

The bird flu has proven scary enough with its occasional spreads from birds…

The world’s wildlife populations haveplummeted by more than two-thirds since 1970– and there are no signs that this downward trend is slowing. The first phase of Cop15 talks in Kunming this week will lay the groundwork for governments to draw up a global agreement next year to halt the loss of nature. If they are to succeed, they will need to tackle what the IPBES (Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and…

Antarctica’s last 6 months were the coldest on record

https://www.cnn.com/2021/10/09/weather/weather-record-cold-antarctica-climate-change/index.html

(CNN)In a year of extreme heat, Antarctica’s last six months were the coldest on record.”For the polar darkness period, from April through September, the average temperature was -60.9 degrees Celsius (-77.6 degrees Fahrenheit), a record for those months,” the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) said. The last six months is also the darkest period at the South Pole, which is where the name polar darkness (alsocalled polar night)comes from. Here, the sun sets for the last time around the spring equinox, and does not rise again until near the autumn equinox six months later.

For the entire Antarctic continent, the winter of 2021 was the second-coldest on record, with the “temperature for June, July, and August 3.4 degrees Celsius (6.1 degrees Fahrenheit) lower than the 1981 to 2010 average at -62.9 degrees…

Urgent: Wisconsin Greenlights 300 Wolf Killings

    PETITION UPDATE

    Center for Biological Diversity

    AUG 24, 2021 —

A new hunt was just approved in Wisconsin allowing the killing of 300 wolves.

We’re fighting to stop it, and you can help. Please give to theWolf Defense Fundtoday.

When a similar hunt was allowed there earlier this year, trophy hunters gunned down 218 wolves in just 72 hours. Now the war on wolves is escalating even further.

Wisconsin is becoming Exhibit A for why wolves need their federal Endangered Species Act protection restored. The state even has a law thatrequiresa wolf hunt each year.

The newly announced 300-wolf quota is more than double the number recommended by a state wildlife agency. Last winter’s slaughter annihilated at least 20% of the state’s wolf population.

Wisconsin allows hunters to use despicable techniques to kill wolves, including using dogs to hunt them down. More tags are sold to kill wolves…

It’s a setting Atwood says is a bit more easy going than the mixed classes.
