U.S. Rep. Dan Newhouse, a Republican from the 4th District, spoke at the start of a public meeting on grizzly restoration in the North Cascades, held Monday (Oct. 7) at the Okanogan County Fairgrounds.

500 attend listening session on bear restoration

Most people attending a public meeting to comment the proposed restoration of grizzly bears in the North Cascades said the animal would not be welcome.

About 500 people showed up Monday evening (Oct. 7) at the Okanogan County Fairgrounds Agriplex to express their opinions on a plan developed by the National Park Service and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to introduce grizzlies to the North Cascades. The goal would be to establish a population of about 200 bears within the next 100 years.

Grizzlies are believed to inhabit the North Cascades in Washington state but the evidence is scant. The last…

David Attenborough – Humans are plague on Earth

Humans are a plague on the Earth that need to be controlled by limiting population growth, according to Sir David Attenborough.

Humans are plague on Earth – Attenborough
Sir David said commentary from presenters like himself is becoming less necessary as camera work is able to tell a story Photo: PA

The television presenter said that humans are threatening their own existence and that of other species by using up the world’s resources.

He said the only way to save the planet from famine and species extinction is to limit human population growth.

“We are a plague on the Earth. It’s coming home to roost over the next 50 years or so. It’s not just climate change; it’s sheer space, places to grow food for this enormous horde. Either we limit our population growth or the natural world will do it for us, and the…

Are We About to Attack Iran?

Image

Exposing the Big Game's avatarThe Extinction Chronicles

John Bolton is gone from the White House, yet war with Iran is suddenly imminent. I had begun to believe irony was dead.

“[Bolton] calls for the preemptive bombing of Iran with dreary regularity during his many Fox News appearances,” I wrote after he became Donald Trump’s national security adviser in March of 2018, “and has labored for years to arrange the proper set of circumstances that would allow Tehran to be rendered into a pile of rubble.”

I was actually foolish enough to indulge in a brief moment of optimism after Bolton was unceremoniously shown the door last week. There was talk of Secretary of State Mike Pompeo taking on Bolton’s role like…

Controlling methane is a fast and critical way to slow global warming, say experts

PRINCETON UNIVERSITY, ENGINEERING SCHOOL

In independent studies, two Princeton University research teams recently identified surprisingly large sources of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, being leaked into the atmosphere. Pound for pound, methane causes a far greater warming effect in the atmosphere than does carbon dioxide — 86-fold more heating over 20 years, and 35-fold more over the course of a century.

In one study, a team headed by Mark Zondlo, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering at Princeton, looked at an area around western Pennsylvania rich with natural gas wells and found that a small number of these wells are “superemitters” of methane. The other study came from the research group…

Arctic sea ice is at a near-record low — but that’s just one of the north’s problems

From raging wildfires to melting ice in Greenland, the top of the world is screaming for help.

Chelsea Wegner was shocked when she landed in Anchorage, Alaska, in July, on her way to a research cruise in the Bering Sea. Smoke from wildfires across the state had darkened the skies, and Anchorage was in the midst of a heatwave that saw temperatures soar past 32 °C for the first time in recorded history.

Wegner, a marine biologist at the University of Maryland in Solomons, also knew that the unusual warmth had melted away nearly all of the sea ice in the Bering Sea. “It was a really surreal moment,” she says.

Later, while sailing aboard a Canadian icebreaker off the coast of Alaska, Wegner watched…

Blame humans for starting the Amazon fires, environmentalists say

Image

Exposing the Big Game's avatarThe Extinction Chronicles

(CNN)The Amazon is burning — and humans are likely to blame.

Environmental organizations and researchers say the wildfires blazing in the Brazilian rainforest were set by cattle ranchers and loggers who want to clear and utilize the land, emboldened by the country’s pro-business president.
“The vast majority of these fires are human-lit,” said Christian Poirier, the program director of non-profit organization Amazon Watch. He added that even during dry seasons, the Amazon — a humid rainforest — doesn’t catch on fire easily, unlike the dry bushland in California or Australia.
Farmers and ranchers have long used fire to clear land, said Poirier, and are likely behind the unusually large number fires burning in the Amazon today.
A satellite image from NASA shows the fires raging in the Amazon rainforest in Brazil in August 2019.

GOD SENDS NOAH DOWN FROM HEAVEN FOR A SECRET MEETING WITH TRUMP
In an unprecedented move by GOD, NOAH was given the impossible task of changing President Trump’s mind to save the Endangered Species Act.

WASHINGTON D.C. (Enviro Snowflake Brief- Not Real News)— In a stunning move by GOD, according to the Washington Post, our Heavenly Father arranged a private meeting for NOAH and President Donald J. Trump to discuss Trump’s recent gutting of the U.S. Endangered Species Act.

The meeting took place last Sunday at President Trump’s New Jersey golf club, which was secretly arranged by Vice President Mike Pence. According to an anonymous Pence staffer, “Pence was thrilled to prove to the world that he really does have a direct line to GOD, and he was also confident there would be nothing God, nor NOAH, could say to Trump to change his mind.”

The staffer added, “Mike knew Trump knows…

Time to Put the ESA on the Endangered List?

Image

Exposing the Big Game's avatarCommittee to Abolish Sport Hunting Blog

Ever since President Nixon signed the bill declaring the Endangered Species Act the law of the land, subsequent presidents (mostly his fellow Republicans) have tried to weaken, undermine or undo it. Not to be outdone, our current president (businessman Donald Trump) has taken a stab at it, or, according to the title of an article cheering his administration on, “revamp” it.

I’m sorry, but, at the risk of sounding distrustful, to me the word “revamp” sounds more like something a bloodsucking Count from Transylvania likes to do when sun goes down, not the kind of behavior you’d expect from an esteemed ruler of the free world.

So what would this planned “revamping” do exactly? What sort of revisions to the Endangered Species Act do the Trumpetts propose?

The Department of the Interior (namely the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. as well as the National Marine Fisheries Service) has introduced new…

Huge Wildfires in the Arctic and Far North Send a Planetary Warning

Image

Exposing the Big Game's avatarThe Extinction Chronicles

The planet’s far North is burning. This summer, over 600 wildfires have consumed more than 2.4 million acres of forest across Alaska. Fires are also raging in northern Canada. In Siberia, choking smoke from13 million acres — an area nearly the size of West Virginia — is blanketing towns and cities.

Fires in these places are normal. But, as studies here at the University of Alaska’s International Arctic Research Center show, they are also abnormal.

My colleagues and I are examining the complex relationships between warming climate, increasing fire and shifting patterns of vegetation. Using locally focused climate data and models from the Scenarios Network for Alaska and Arctic Planning, the research group I help coordinate, we are finding evidence that is…
