One of the most irritating things about the Taiji campaign in Japan is the infighting amongst individuals and organization involved.
We received a few messages and calls this past week rudely demanding why Sea Shepherd is not in Taiji, Japan?
“Other groups are there, where the hell are you?”
Or “Why have you abandoned the dolphins?”
One group that has been telling us to get out of Taiji for years because we are in their opinion, counter productive called to criticize Sea Shepherd for not being there implying that we have quit the Taiji campign or at least that is what some people want others to believe.
One person called our office to say we had no right to post Blue Cove and Red Cove Day banners. “You’re stealing our ideas and taking credit for what our group is doing?” The very irate caller said, stating we had no right to post these banners.
Very strange since neither Sea Shepherd nor I post these Blue and Red Days banners but many of our supporters do and it has been my belief that the people who created the Blue and Red Day Banners would want them posted by everyone. I do admit I have no idea who created the concept and I don’t really care. If people around the world wish to post these banners, it it their right to do so unless someone, somewhere wishes to invoke a copy right.
To be blunt, Sea Shepherd has not abandoned the dolphins at Taiji. And to be even more blunt we really don’t care what people call us. We are there and will continue to be there for the dolphins. Not for people – for the dolphins.
The strength of an eco-system is in diversity. So also is the strength of a movement. We need diversity of strategies, tactics, ideas and passions.
With Taiji, we have that diversity. We have Sea Shepherd, The Dolphin Project, Save Taiji Dolphins, Earth Island Institute, Surfers for Cetaceans and many more groups and individuals.
We have no intention of bickering with any group nor do we have any interest in criticizing any other group. Our policy on criticisms from other groups is to ignore the criticisms and to refuse to engage in arguments with other groups.
The situation in Taiji continues to evolve. It is no secret that most Cove Guardian veterans have been banned from entry into Japan. This of course presents logistical obstacles that must be solved.
Sea Shepherd has decided to not be on the ground for September. Why? Because we don’t have an available Cove Guardian leader for September and September is the least dangerous month for dolphins in the season. Therefore we have scheduled Operation A for October – January and Operation B for January to March.
Why do we need a good Cove Guardian leader? Because it is our responsibility to see that volunteers from around the world have guidance when on the ground in Taiji. The police have in the past threatened and arrested Sea Shepherd volunteers. Leaders on site need to be there on the ground to offer advice and guidance on hotels, eating places, individuals of concern, the regulations and how to deal with the police and the ultra-nationalists, etc.
Sea Shepherd intends to have leadership on the ground in Taiji beginning in October. We also have plans in process that we do not intend to divulge simply because some people see fit to question our motivations and our strategies.
We are also working on a global plan to address the root of the problem – the captivity industry.
We will never abandon the dolphins. We have opposed the killing of dolphins since 1981 at Iki Island and since 2003 at Taiji. We had crew almost killed in the Tsunami in 2011. We have been on the ground every year in Taiji since 2009 in addition to fighting the slaughter of Pilot whale and dolphins in the Faroe Islands since 1983.
Criticisms, accusations, belittling and condemnation from third parties are meaningless within the context of our history and our achievements.
We salute Ric O’Barry and the Dolphin Project. We salute Louis Psyhoyos for The Cove. We salute the Producers of Blackfish. We salute Surfers for Cetaceans. We salute each and every person who has stood on the beach at Taiji and we salute each and every person who has demonstrated in front of a Japanese Embassy or consulate anywhere in the world.
We also salute our past Cove Guardian leaders who cannot return for the simple fact that they are Cove Guardian veterans. They did not commit a crime but in Japan opposition to the slaughter is treated like a crime.
Ric O’Barry has also suffered being banned demonstrating that it is not just Sea Shepherd’s opposition that is considered a threat.
Ric may disagree with Sea Shepherd’s aggressiveness but to the Japanese authorities, there seems to be no distinction.
In short, if our critics wish to criticize, they will do so and we can do nothing about it. But what we can do is to not join the party.
We need to focus on the real enemy and not be distracted by anyone else for any reason. I know people like to whine and complain, to point fingers and condemn. By all means they are free to do so. We have no control over that.
What we can control is our own response and that will be no response at all.
I see every individual and group involved in this cause as an important part of this important movement. There are only two sides – those who want to see dolphins slaughtered and those who don’t.
It a battle between life and death, good and evil, and we all know who represents Evil and who represents Good and if there are shades of gray poking about here and there, such shadows are of no significance.
We must try as hard as we can to speak in one voice when we can. Sea Shepherd intends to do just that.
Continuing to burn and extract fossil fuels comes at a terrible and rising risk for pretty much everyone. Thankfully, the capacity to reduce our dependence on these fuels from hell and transition to far less environmentally harmful energy sources is available like never before. But whether or not we make that choice as a society will depend on the actions of both political and economic leaders as well as individuals in the U.S. and around the world.

The Range 12 wildfire in Washington State began July 30 and burned for days, blackening 176,600 acres of valuable habitat on the Hanford Reach National Monument. The land was set aside in 2000 by President Bill Clinton, and it’s home to desert species including the Greater Sage-Grouse, sagebrush sparrows and tiny burrowing owls.

WASHINGTON — Hillary Clinton on Tuesday named former U.S. Sen. Ken Salazar of Colorado as the chairman of her White House transition team — a job that puts him in prime position to join Clinton’s administration if she wins the election.
As head of a lineup that includes former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm and former National Security Adviser Tom Donilon, Salazar will be in charge of vetting potential agency leaders and officials, as well as consulting with President Barack Obama’s administration on issues ranging from the economy to national security.
“Once Hillary Clinton makes history by being elected as the nation’s first woman president, we want to have a turnkey operation in place so she can hit the ground running right away,” Salazar, a Democrat, said in a statement released Tuesday by the Clinton campaign.
While transition teams are nothing new, their role has become increasingly official in recent years. Salazar’s team will meet regularly with the administration and use work space provided by the General Services Administration. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was tapped in May by Donald Trump for a similar assignment.
Clinton’s selection of Salazar is not a complete surprise, said Colorado Democrats who know both politicians. Salazar has been a longtime Clinton supporter — hosting a campaign event for her last fall — and he was mentioned as a possible running mate in the early months of the 2016 presidential campaign.
Clinton and Salazar have a history, too. Not only did they serve together in the U.S. Senate, the two politicians both were Cabinet officials under Obama: She with the State Department and he with the U.S. Department of the Interior.
“My perception is that Secretary Clinton and Secretary Salazar built a strong relationship when they both were serving in the Cabinet,” said Steve Bachar, a member of Clinton’s National Finance Committee. “They gained a lot of mutual respect and when Secretary Clinton announced her candidacy for president, Ken stepped in to be as helpful as he could in every way he could.”
Although Clinton ultimately selected U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia as her pick for vice president — over Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper — the transition team could provide Salazar a road back to Washington if he wants it.

Now that the focus has shifted to the upcoming trials of the outlaws who took over Oregon’s Malheur National Wildlife Refuge offices last January, we might recall that the actual, physical occupation lasted for a total of 41 days. In many ways, however, it never ended, and there is every reason to conclude that the occupiers won.
The refuge’s headquarters are still closed, federal cops guard the area, and no one answers the phone. At least six staff members have left, including the fisheries expert and the ecologist. They have not been replaced.
The refuge is drier now than I have ever seen it; the usually flooded ditches along Center Patrol Road are without waterfowl. Only two ponds hold water and the birds that depend on it.
The Malheur Refuge website cautions prospective visitors: “Buildings and grounds are active work sites and are closed for safety reasons.” When I found a refuge employee in a pickup on the side of the road, I asked him what “active work site” meant. He smiled wryly and answered, “That answer would have to come from a higher pay grade.”
I first visited the Malheur Wildlife Refuge in 1966, and I started teaching in the vicinity in 1973. Virtually every Memorial Day weekend since then, I have gone birding on the headquarters grounds, along with other bird watchers from the Northwest birding community and beyond. I teach a summer ornithology class now on nearby Steens Mountain, and every August I tour the refuge with my students.
But this year, we were not allowed in; in fact, a federal truck stood by the blockaded entrance to keep us out. Yet nearly a hundred days had gone by since the last occupier left, and the site had been safely visited by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Director Daniel M. Ashe and even Interior Secretary Sally Jewell. Both hosted the press on the “active work sites,” and no problems were reported. Ashe said that the occupiers had done damage estimated at $6 million, and now the rumor is that this venerable and beautiful oasis — once a showplace visited regularly by Supreme Justice William O. Douglas — will undergo a fancy facelift.
That makes me fear that the old buildings, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps out of pink Dufurrena sandstone in the 1930s, might be sacrificed to some Washington, D.C. architect’s vision of modernity. I doubt that the occupiers, slovenly though they reportedly were, could have done that much damage.
Meanwhile, all is not quiet on this Western front. Some or all of the 13 ranchers with grazing privileges on the refuge were going full-bore when my students and I drove north along the refuge on Aug. 12.
Thousands of acres of the Blitzen Valley part of the refuge had been mowed. Three huge double-flatbed trailered semis passed us going south, ready to welcome on board the valuable hay bales. Ranchers apparently pay with “in kind services,” which in this case means that the hay is paid for by mowing, baling and hauling it off. Because the mowing is considered beneficial to wildlife, it is considered a “service’ to the refuge and to wildlife, so little or no cash changes hands.
So ubiquitous was the haying activity I saw that it is hard to believe that it had only been going on for two days. Aug. 10 is the first day any haying efforts are allowed, in part because that is the date that most, but not all, young sandhill cranes are believed to be out of danger of being baled, along with the hay. A young crane, faced with an advancing piece of machinery, will crouch down instead of fleeing, and thus get macerated by a combine.
The first of the thousands of cattle that will graze there for the better part of nine months were visible, but I was concerned with some trespass livestock I had seen on Aug. 5, about a mile south of headquarters. I find trespassing cattle almost every year — there were cowpies last year right in front of refuge headquarters — but this year I was unable to report them, because nobody seems to be at work.
And so the occupation continues, even though most of the occupiers are safely tucked away in jail cells. The headquarters compound may be off-limits to human visitors, but the refuge is wide open for the grazing “treatments” that are allowed in order to “meet management objectives.” Sadly, the wildlife meant to find refuge in this place no longer seem to count for much.
Your hatred of seals and sea lions runs deep. Your father was a commercial fisherman, like his father before him. If they taught you anything about fishing, it was that marine mammals are the enemy. They serve no earthly purpose; the only good one is a dead one.
Never mind that seals and sea lions evolved over tens of millions of years to adapt to aquatic habitats, eventually becoming nature’s perfect fishers; that species of fish and other sea life evolved in harmony with pinnipeds and so were able to withstand their level of predation; or that the reasons salmon are more scarce than they were for your grand-pappy are all because of human activity—including commercial fishing.
That so-called “evolution” stuff is just some big lie made up by “scientists” who don’t know shit from Shinola and probably work for that other arch-enemy: the federal government. (Forget that the government…

The Trump brothers were attacked by the international animal-rights movement in 2012 when images of the two from an African safari circulated on social media.

Christians and Muslims both believe that God aka Allah, aka.Yahweh has a DIVINE PLAN. He knows when you will be born before you are born. He knows when you will die. He knows when you will get laid for the first time and how many kids you will have. He knows when you have been naughty and he knows when you have been nice. It’s all in the mysterious big book, you know, the one He will use for the final judgment, when you will be brought before Him to atone for your numerous sins.
Apparently it’s a pretty big book.
The problem is that God knows before you were born, what sins you will commit. It’s all pre-ordained or as the Moslems say… “it is written.”
So if God knows all this and the script for your life is set way before you’re born than what is all the praying about?
How can Christians and Muslims accept and believe in the DIVINE PLAN yet at the same time they are constantly asking God to change HIS plan in their prayers.
Some people pray for love, others for money. Some pray for children. Some pray for their enemies to die. Some people pray for Notre Dame to kick ass on the grid iron and some people pray for America to kick Syrian ass in Iraq for Jesus, while the other side prays for victory for Mohammed.
But if it is all in the DIVINE PLAN, why is anyone worried about anything? Christians and Muslims should just accept GOD’s PLAN and stop fretting about things and calling for prayers every time a terrorist attack happens or they lose the lottery.
Why bother the Big Guy in the Sky with your petty little problems. Perhaps he’s so damn busy with insignificant prayers that he just never gets around to ending war, domestic violence, serial killing, child and animal abuse, and pestilence.
Perhaps He could solve these problems if He did not have to deal with selfish prayers like winning the lottery, vengeful prayers and prayers of insecurity. In fact He seems to have so many prayers that He only gets to address a small fraction, like for example when this one guy, the sole survivor of an airplane crash said that God answered his prayers and that is why he survived which implied that God did not give a fig for those who died including the babies.
Prayers are answered randomly just as events happen randomly.
I don’t pray. I never saw the logic in it. But I do understand that prayer serves as a means of bringing peace and comfort to people and people have a right to pray and to believe in and have faith in what they believe. It is certainly far better than drugs and escapism to avoid the reality of life.
Perhaps it’s because I have never been addicted to drugs, tobacco, alcohol or anything else, including prayer that I fail to see the need for prayer.
Does praying for peace bring about the end of war? If it did I would pray three times a day but my observation is that prayer in many cases is the cause of war with people of opposing faiths praying for victory over their enemies – the unbelievers, and everyone is an unbeliever in some way because they do not believe in the God of the people who believe in another God or the same God who simply is called by a different name.
And everyone goes to Hell because Catholics will go to Protestants hell, Protestants will go to Catholic Hell, Christians and Jews and Atheists will got to Islamic Hell and Muslims and Jews will go to Christian Hell.
I have been told a thousand times in my life that I’m going to Hell. It does not bother me for the simple reason I don’t believe in Hell or the afterlife.
Well I used to believe in reincarnation but that was in my last life, not in this one.
As Gertrude Stein once said, “the answer is that there is no answer and that is the only answer we shall ever get.”
We are finite minds in an infinite universe and the finite cannot comprehend the infinite.
So for those people to who answers are demanded, wanted or needed, the only alternative is the creation of an answer to cling to within the chaos of the infinite cosmos unless you are like myself, a person who looks upon chaos as an adventure and feels secure, lost in a sea of uncertainty and insecurity.
Peace and freedom can simply be found through the acceptance of what is and what will be. When you do not fear death or consequences you are liberated from stress and anxiety and your mind is at peace, you are liberated from stress and you truly become free.
However there really is a divine plan. It is the order within the Universe controlled by the laws of physics. There are also the ecological laws. You can do nothing about the former. If you violate the laws of physics – you simply cease to exist. If you violate the laws of ecology, you will die. We have no control over the laws of physics but we do have control over how we respect the laws of ecology. With the laws of ecology we can determine our collective future. Violating both the law pf physics and the laws of ecology will get us killed individually, or can cause our extinction as a species.
A God will not protect us from Climate Change because a God did not bring it about. Humanity did and Humanity is not only the cause but we also have the power to address it which we most likely will not as long as we depend upon prayer to replace our responsibilities.
