LYON, France (Reuters) – Farmers trucked hundreds of sheep into a central square in the French city of Lyon on Monday in protest against the government’s protection of wolves, which they blame for livestock deaths and heavy financial losses.

European wolves were hunted to extinction in France in the 1930s but a pair crossed the Alps from Italy in the early 1990s and they now number about 360 in packs scattered across the country, according to wildlife groups.

As their population has rebounded, they have encroached increasingly on farmland.

“10,000 animals killed every year by the wolf,” read one banner

Michele Boudoin, president of the National Sheep Federation, said wolves were costing livestock producers 26 million euros a year compared with 1.5 million euros in 2004.

“Enough with the wolf,” Boudoin exclaimed. “At some point you have to choose between farmers and the wolf.”

A new five-year government plan allows a small number of wolves to be culled each year, according to French media, but farmers are demanding the right to shoot dead any wolf that attacks their herds.

  1. “10,000 animals killed annually” allegedly by wolves in France, sheep ranchers protest, must be fat wolves, must be self reports, claims for compensation by sheep ranchers.

Let us do some math: around 300 wolves, that would be over 33 sheep per year per wolf.

Are hunters killing all the wildlife so wolves have little choice but sheep for dinner? Seems like the wolves would soon get too fat to move?

“How many prey animals do wolves kill per year? Wolves depend on a variety of large ungulates (hoofed animals) for food. Although studies have been conducted in some areas to determine the actual number of prey killed each year, the results are estimates. For example, an estimate for deer “equivalent” ranges from 15 to 19 adult-sized deer per wolf per year (equivalent refers to the mass of deer consumed by wolves, not individual deer). Given the 2013 estimate of 2,200 wolves in Minnesota, for instance, that would equal 33,000 to 41,800 deer killed by wolves. In comparison, hunters killed approximately 128,814 deer during the 2013 firearms deer harvest season. Additionally, several thousand deer are killed during collisions with vehicles each year (interesting fact).” http://www.wolf.org/wolf-info/basic-wolf-info/wolf-faqs/

I bet anytime a sheep dies of something, a self reporting French sheep rancher is running for compensation because of wolves.

  3. In a world overpopulated by human beings who own and profit by the animals they domesticated, the wolf won’t be left alone. Isaiah’s phophecy is not for the lambs and wolves of this world.
