The photo is not of the lion that was killed.
On Friday a male lion, most-likely lured out of Kruger National Park with bait provided by an elephant and buffalo hunt, was shot by an alleged American trophy hunter in Umbabat Private Nature Reserve.
As per the Daily Maverick, unconfirmed reports suggest the lion may have been the leader of the Western Pride named Skye. If so, his cubs will be killed by another male taking over the pride.
Making the situation even more unfathomable, the tragic hunt took place despite non-profits EMS Foundation and Ban Animal Trading, sent a Cease and Desist warning to the Associated Private Nature Reserves (APNR) chairman, Rob Garmany, CEO of Kruger Park Glen Philips and The Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency, threatening legal action if the hunt occurred.
Why are APNR members, which border Kruger National Park…

How Does Exploiting Elephants During “Friendly” Football Match In Thailand Help Discourage Youth From Gambling Prior To The World Cup? It Doesn’t! – World Animal News

A “friendly” football match with students riding elephants was held today in Thailand as part of a campaign against gambling on the sport ahead of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, which begins on Thursday in Russia.
As per The Nation, nine elephants, adorned with “colorful cheering-squad paints” participated in a free-kick contest at the Ayutthaya Wittayalai School stadium before joining in a short game with a team of human opponents, the school’s youth athletes. The poor elephants were on loan from the Ayutthaya Elephant Palace and Royal Kraal in Phra Nakhon Sri Ayutthaya.

The activity was reportedly held to boost the tourism of the historic province and city of Ayutthaya, the second Siamese capital after Sukhothai, and to encourage people, especially children and youth, to watch the World Cup matches in the next four weeks without placing bets.

BLM is considering shipping America’s wild horses to Guyana to an area with jaguars, and to a Siberian tiger refuge in Russia to be used as prey

A couple of notes to preface the Huffington Post article below:

Regarding Russian-American company OOO Rancho Khasan: “On Nov. 1, Anatoli Lebedev, the organization’s co-founder, wrote: ‘[F]or marketing we need a very clear picture ― how are we able to extract some horses for meat from the whole herd … without hurting hearts of animal rights activists, who trusted us?’”

Regarding the area in Guyana where the BLM is considering shipping America’s wild horses (click to enlarge):

Is this how our wild horses will be treated once “adopted,” and shipped overseas out of BLM’s jurisdiction?

Santa Fe Prairie Dogs Need Our Help!

Santa Fe’s native animals are running out of time, due to massive development projects, lack of concern for local wild life,  and destruction of habitat by a city government which currently cares little or nothing about remaining Nature.  Increasing hot temperatures are also creating hardship for prairie dogs and the other wild animals who co-exist with them on remaining open areas within Santa Fe City/County limits.

Just recently, a small colony was decimated in order for Santa Fe  to have a Chik-fil-a fast food restaurant. There may be a few survivors, but not for long, due to the habitat destruction.
Also, just recently, a lovely 8 acre treed lot  off Rodeo Rd. in Santa Fe was bulldozed, now a barren waste land awaiting construction for apartments–a healthy colony was there, but no more. We do not know if any escaped.Trees, grasses and bushes  were bulldozed along with the wild life. Prairie dogs do not exist in a vacuum: with other animals living in symbiosis with them, such as quail, rabbits, snakes, birds, and burrowing owls,  also died.
If wild life & animal groups do not help those of us who are willing to step up and fight for these native wild animals, they will suffer and die.  Any “Nature” left in the Santa Fe area will be obliterated, with wall to wall tacky developments.
Where are the groups willing to help us meet  to the City & County of Santa Fe, to help  revise the present, non-enforceable prairie dog ordinance, which is not even currently honored? Where are the groups who are willing to meet with us, and be present at meetings with these local governments? We are hoping that a few groups will step up and provide some support by being present with these city and county entities–before it’s too late. We would appreciate hearing from you!
Is there anyone out there??

Protect Endangered Species

Heartbreaking Truth: Countless marine species are in real, grave danger of becoming extinct.

Could you imagine a world where children only read about whales and sea turtles in science books on natural history, aligning them with such long-gone species as the dinosaurs?

We can’t either, and luckily, that’s where the Endangered Species Act (ESA) comes in.

The Endangered Species Act is critical to keeping our nation’s most threatened marine wildlife safe from harm. But now, there are talks that the law’s very existence could be at stake. Write to your Members of Congress today and let them know you support the critical protections the ESA provides for our ocean’s most vulnerable animals.

Take action today and let them know you mean business: the ESA has got to stay. Far too many species, from innocent baby turtles to whales and more…

Immediate Action To Be Taken On Behalf Of Ely An Abused And Neglected Elephant
OneProtest started this petition to Mexico City Governor Miguel Angel Mancera Espinosa and 4 others

A total of 3 elephants have died at The San Juan de Aragon Zoo. Maggie, an Asian elephant being the latest. Maggie was euthanized after suffering from degenerative osteoarthritis. Ely could be next on the list of dead elephants at San Juan de Aragon Zoo if nothing is done to help her. It is important to note that every animal at the San Juan de Aragon Zoo is insured and upon the animal’s death the zoo receives compensation.

We are calling for the immediate and prompt surrender of Ely, a female African elephant that is being held at the San Juan de Aragon Zoo.

Ely is a former circus elephant who was bought by the Aragon Zoo. The Zoo proclaims they’re…

Petition · Send Asha the African Elephant to Sanctuary · Change.org

Voices for Asha started this petition to Mark Herring and 3 others

Asha, a 35-year-old female, African elephant has been alone at the Natural Bridge Zoo in Virginia for an accumulative 22 years. She is forced to give over 10,000 rides a year, despite active tuberculosis findings in monkeys held at the zoo. This is a huge risk to the public who are in close proximity to her on a daily basis. Her toenails are cracked due to lack of foot care, and the zoo has been cited for failing to provide adequate veterinary care across the board. These are just a handful of the issues she faces on a daily basis.

In April 2015, the Natural Bridge Zoo’s permit to publicly exhibit wild animals was suspended by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (DGIF). The zoo has since reopened despite numerous, ongoing complaints and inspections.

In male dolphin alliances, ‘everybody knows your name’ — ScienceDaily
Jonathon Goodman,
3-4 minutes

It’s not uncommon in dolphin society for males to form long-lasting alliances with other males, sometimes for decades. Now, after studying bottlenose dolphins in Shark Bay, Australia, for more than 30 years, researchers reporting in Current Biology on June 7 find that these males retain individual vocal labels rather than sharing a common call with their cooperative partners.

“We found that male bottlenose dolphins that form long-term cooperative partnerships or alliances with one another retain individual vocal labels, or ‘names,’ which allows them to recognize many different friends and rivals in their social network,” says Stephanie King (@_StephanieLKing) from the University of Western Australia. “Our work shows that these ‘names’ help males keep track of their many different relationships: who are their friends, who are their friend’s friends, and who are their competitors.”

Tundra Fires Near Lake MacKenzie Tundra Fires between 62 and 66 degrees North

Over the past week, large tundra fires have been erupting over a section of extreme northern Canada between the Great Slave Lake and the shores of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. With a major Arctic heatwave predicted as various extreme weather conditions arise, this region will be worth very close monitoring over the next few days.

The fires are emerging in a region of the Arctic between 62 and 66 degrees north latitude, near the Arctic Circle. In the image above, we see the Great Slave Lake in the lower left hand corner, the Great Bear Lake in the upper center, and Coronation Gulf and Amundsen Bay bordering the map’s right hand side. The fires are visible, along with their tell-tale smoke plumes and underlying scorch marks, in a region between the Great Slave Lake and Great Bear Lake…
