Challenging the “Georgia Coyote Challenge” ~ Camilla Fox Interviews Dr. Chris Mowry, Project Coyote Science Advisory Board Member and Co-Founder of the Atlanta Coyote Project

Camilla: You studied mammal social systems as a graduate student and now teach at Berry College, where you’ve conducted a range of coyote studies. Tell us about these studies, what you’ve learned, and what you are now teaching students about ecology and conservation.

Chris: One of my former students got me interested in coyotes in the early 2000s. Berry College is the largest contiguous college campus in the world. It sits on 26,000 acres of absolutely beautiful land. We have a student-operated dairy farm and we knew that coyote sightings were increasing on campus because the dairy students were seeing and hearing coyotes, although negative interactions were almost nonexistent. We started our studies with simple camera trapping and scat analysis to learn more about the…

The best available science shows that lethal removal of coyotes during spring-summer is most effective for reducing negative impacts from coyote predation on native wildlife, which is why this program is focused on March–August. To address concerns about coyotes, our agency is raising awareness that coyotes can be hunted and trapped year-round. The Coyote Challenge is part of this educational effort.

Poaching ring suspects killed hundreds of animals for ‘thrill of the kill,’ authorities say

Exposing the Big Game's avatarCommittee to Abolish Sport Hunting Blog

Poaching photos had been posted on text messages and social media.

(CNN)The suspects documented their kill in graphic photos — grinning near slumped over carcasses, posing with a decapitated elk head and taking a selfie with animal blood splattered over one of the alleged poacher’s face.

Over text messages and social media, the poaching suspects boasted about the animals they illegally slaughtered, authorities say. Some of them even called themselves the “kill ’em all boys,” said Captain Jeff Wickersham from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.
The suspects were part of a massive poaching ring in Oregon and Washington, who were altogether charged with more than 200 misdemeanors and felonies, authorities say. They are accused of killing more than 200 animals including deer, bears, cougars, bobcats and a squirrel.

What’s the Difference between Sport Hunting and Poaching?

Exposing the Big Game's avatarCommittee to Abolish Sport Hunting Blog

The short answer is, not as much as you might think. We here at C.A.S.H. believe that all hunting is a form of stealing, whether from nature, the animals’ families or the lives of the victims themselves. But the legal definition of poaching has more to do with stealing an opportunity from another hunter.

The good thing about reporting a poacher is that it’s the one way we can use the law to punish the killing of wildlife. For the most part, poaching laws were written with the licensed hunters in mind, not necessarily the animals’ welfare. But sometimes “game” laws limit the kill methods, quantity of kills and other factors that might happen to inadvertently benefit the animals themselves as well. Clearly not because of this, some “sportsman’s” groups like to support most game regulations, mainly to ensure their own good luck for the next time out.

By WAN – June 11, 2018

Photos from Yorkshire Wildlife Park
WAN is thrilled to share that the only living polar bear in South Korea is being relocated later this year from the Everland Zoo, to the world-class facilities of Yorkshire Wildlife Park (YWP) in Doncaster, United Kingdom.
Tongki, 24, will be re-homed at YWP’s award-winning Project Polar, an international center for the conservation and rehabilitation of polar bears both in captivity and in the wild, which is especially important as Polar Bears are increasingly threatened by global warming.
YWP staff and vets have already visited Tongki and performed health checks to check if he is fit to travel the 5,500 miles from Korea to Yorkshire this November.
“We are delighted to accept Tongki and give him a wonderful retirement in the ten-acre reserves here at YWP,” John Minion, CEO of the park said in a statement. “Our top priority…
