Humpback whale gulps and spits out Cape Cod lobsterman

A US lobsterman has been describing how he escaped being swallowed by a humpback whale.

Michael Packard says he was diving when he ended up in the marine giant’s mouth for about 30-40 seconds off Provincetown, Massachusetts.

The leviathan spat him out and Mr Packard was left with nothing more than a suspected dislocated knee.

Despite his wife’s pleas to get another job, he has no plans of giving up a 40-year career diving off Cape Cod.

Humpback whales can grow to as long as 50ft (15m) and weigh about 36 tons. According to the World Wildlife Fund, their global population is about 60,000.

Mr Packard, 56, told the Cape Cod Times he and his crewmate took their boat, the Ja’n J, off Herring Cove on Friday morning where conditions were excellent, with water visibility at about 20ft.

He told WBZ-TV News that after jumping off the vessel in scuba gear into the water, he “felt this huge bump and everything went dark”.

‘He’s trying to swallow me’

He thought he had been attacked by one of the great white sharks that swim in the area, “and then I felt around and I realised there was no teeth”.

“And then I realised: ‘Oh my God, I’m in a whale’s mouth and he’s trying to swallow me. This is it, I’m going die’.”

Mr Packard says he thought about his wife and two boys, aged 12 and 15.

“Then all of a sudden he went up to the surface and just erupted and started shaking his head.

“I just got thrown in the air and landed in the water. I was free and I just floated there. I couldn’t believe… I’m here to tell it.”

His topside crewmate, who had been desperately scanning the water for telltale bubbles from Mr Packard’s oxygen respirator, hauled him back into the boat.

Provincetown Fire Department confirmed to CBS News they had responded to a call at 08:15 local time (12:15 GMT) to help an injured lobsterman at a Provincetown beach.

Journalists interviewed Mr Packard about his Biblical ordeal after he was discharged from Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.

Humpback whales tend to feed by opening their mouth wide to gulp down as much prey, like fish or krill, as possible, leading marine scientists to speculate that what happened to Mr Packard was in all likelihood purely accidental. One expert told the Cape Cod Times it was practically unheard of for a whale to swallow a human.

In NBC interview, Putin says he can work with Biden

Corky SiemaszkoFri, June 11, 2021, 4:30 PM·3 min read

Russian President Vladimir Putin, in an exclusive interview Friday with NBC News, called former President Donald Trump a “colorful individual” and said he can work with President Joe Biden.

Putin compared the two presidents at a time when relations between Russia and the United States are at a historic low and ahead of the Russian leader’s upcoming summit with Biden.

“Well even now, I believe that former U.S. president Mr. Trump is an extraordinary individual, talented individual, otherwise he would not have become U.S. president,” Putin told NBC’s Keir Simmons during a wide-ranging and, at times, contentious interview. “He is a colorful individual. You may like him or not. And, but he didn’t…

NATCHEZ, Miss. (AP) — Doughnuts from a local store were the key to capturing a large black bear that had been spotted wandering near downtown Natchez — he couldn’t resist them, authorities said.

Officers used doughnuts from The Donut Shop to lure the bear into a barrel-shaped trap for his breakfast on Thursday, The Natchez Democrat reported.Recommended VideosPowered byAnyClipSurprise Donuts Recipe Doughnuts Recipe Donuts Filled With Caramel Chocolate Bhumika Bhurani3.9KPlay Videohttps://imasdk.googleapis.com/js/core/bridge3.464.0_en.html#goog_1887231766https://imasdk.googleapis.com/js/core/bridge3.464.0_en.html#goog_1274544031Ad: (6)

HURRY! $1* for 6mos. ends June 13th!

Aproposed rule regarding, “Prizes of Value for Predator Hunting Contests” was heard by the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources Board meeting on May 27. Wildlife killing contests are organized events in which participants compete for prizes (typically cash or guns) to see who can kill the greatest number or the largest or smallest animals within a certain time period.

Participants may even compete to kill the youngest, mangiest or ugliest animal, or the animal with the bushiest tail. Contests may also be judged on a system of points attributed to each species killed, such as five points per coyote, three points per fox, etc.

While I support sustainable hunting, wildlife killing contests are archaic and outdated events that do not reflect the majority of Virginians’ feelings towards our wildlife in 2021.

Protect Our Wildlife is petitioning to ban hounding and the use of lead ammunition on the Refuge

STOWE, Vt. — The Silvio O. Conte National Wildlife Refuge is seeking public comment on its recreational hunting and fishing plan found here. This plan impacts the Nulhegan Basin Division and the Putney Mountain Unit in Putney. Currently, no areas of the Vermont portion of the Refuge are closed to hunting.

“The use of radio-collared hounds to run down bobcats, bears, coyotes and other wildlife is a cruel and disruptive practice,” said Johh Aberth, POW Board member and licensed Vermont volunteer wildlife rehabilitator. Hounding occurs not only during the legal hunting seasons, but throughout the year during the hound training season. Aberth added, “The hounds chase the animals for miles through the woods until the animal climbs a tree where they’re then often shot or decides to…

Newly discovered planet could have water clouds

https://www.cnn.com/2021/06/10/world/exoplanet-atmosphere-study-scn/index.html

By Ashley Strickland, CNN

Updated 3:58 PM ET, Thu June 10, 2021

(CNN)Scientists have discovered an exoplanet located 90 light-years from Earth with an intriguing atmosphere — one that could contain water clouds.Exoplanets are planets located outside of our solar system. This exoplanet, called TOI-1231 b, completes a full orbit around its star every 24 Earth days.It orbits a red, or M-type, dwarf star, known as NLTT 24399, that is smaller and dimmer than stars like our sun.

The discovery of the planet was detailed in a new study that will be published in a future issue of The Astronomical Journal.

What alien raindrops on other planets have in common with rain on Earth

What alien raindrops on other planets have in common with rain on Earth“Even though TOI 1231 b is eight times closer to its star than the Earth is to the Sun, its temperature is similar to that of Earth, thanks to its cooler and less bright host star,” said study coauthor Diana Dragomir, an assistant professor in the University of New Mexico’s department of physics and astronomy, in a statement.

“However, the planet itself is actually larger than earth and a little bit smaller than Neptune — we could call it a sub-Neptune.”

Why this exoplanet might have clouds

The researchers were able to determine the planet’s radius and mass, which helped them calculate its density and infer its composition.Enter your email to sign up for the Wonder Theory newsletter.“close dialog”

Webb will have the ability to peer into the atmospheres of exoplanets and help determine their composition. And Hubble is scheduled to observe the exoplanet later this month.Sign up for CNN’s Wonder Theory science newsletter. Explore the universe with news on fascinating discoveries, scientific advancements and more.

The search for exoplanets

Burt, Dragomir and their colleagues discovered the planet using data from NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite, or TESS. The planet-hunting satellite, launched in 2018, observes different areas of the sky for 28 days at a time. So far, TESS has helped scientists find large and small exoplanets orbiting stars like our sun as well as the smaller M dwarf stars. These diminutive stars are common in the Milky Way galaxy. When a planet crosses in front of its star during orbit, it blocks a certain amount of light. This is called a transit, and it’s one way astronomers search for exoplanets using missions like TESS.

These 7 Earth-size exoplanets named after beer may be incredibly similar

These 7 Earth-size exoplanets named after beer may be incredibly similarGiven that M dwarf stars are smaller, the amount of light blocked by a planet orbiting them is larger, which makes the transit more detectable. Scientists look for at least two transits before determining if they have found an exoplanet candidate. Follow-up observations were made using the Planet Finder Spectrograph on the Magellan Clay telescope at Las Campanas Observatory in Chile.

“One of the most intriguing results of the last two decades of exoplanet science is that, thus far, none of the new planetary systems we’ve discovered look anything like our own solar system,” Burt said.”This new planet we’ve discovered is still weird — but it’s one step closer to being somewhat like our neighborhood planets.”

China has punished 27 government officials deemed responsible for last month’s ultramarathon deaths, the state-run People’s Daily said on Friday, one of the world’s deadliest sporting tragedies in recent history.

Twenty-one people died of hypothermia when extremely cold weather suddenly descended on a government-organized 100 km marathon on May 22 in the rugged northwestern province of Gansu.

The head of Jingtai county, where the race was held, was dismissed from her post, the People’s Daily reported, citing a news briefing by investigators.

Other organizers held accountable included the mayor and the Communist Party chief of the city of Baiyin, to which the jurisdiction of Jingtai belongs.

Other punishments imposed on officials included major demerit ratings and disciplinary warnings.WATCH NOWVIDEO06:54Asia’s growing addiction to the ultramarathon

Li Zuobi, the Jingtai county party chief, fell from his apartment building on June 9 and died, state media reported, adding that the police have ruled out homicide while Li’s death was still being investigated.

It was not clear whether or not Li’s death was linked to the ultramarathon.

The investigators said the tragedy was a public safety incident brought about by extreme weather including high winds, heavy rain and plunging temperatures, as well as unprofessional organization and operation.

China’s sport administration said last week it was suspending all high-risk sports events that lack a supervisory body, established rules and clear safety standards.

The activities halted include mountain and desert trail sports, wingsuit flying and ultra-long distance running.

Images of Joe Biden giving speeches and shaking hands with foreign dignitaries duringhis ongoing trip to Europewill take up space in the news over the coming week. But once he returns to the United States, the pattern that’s prevailed over the past five months will likely resume.

Which means the president will once again disappear.

It was common for Democrats during the 2020 presidential campaign to talk encouragingly about how boring a Biden administration would be in comparison to the nonstop cycle of chaos, cruelty, and outrage that prevailed under President Trump. Where Trump tweeted partisan provocations day and night, keeping reporters and pundits furiously scribbling, analyzing, and denouncing 24/7, life under a Biden presidency would return to normal, with a slower pace and the president…
