A whole baby woolly mammoth has been found frozen in the permafrost of north-western Canada – the first such discovery in North America.
The mummified ice age mammoth is thought to be more than 30,000 years old. It was found by gold miners in Yukon’s Klondike region on Tuesday.
The area of the find belongs to the Tr’ondek Hwech’in First Nation.
The Yukon government compared it to Russia’s discovery of a baby mammoth in the permafrost of Siberia in 2007.
It said it was “the most complete mummified mammoth found in North America”, and only the second such find in the world.
The baby, thought to be female, has been named Nun cho ga, meaning “big baby animal” in the Han language spoken by Native Americans in the area.
“Nun cho ga is beautiful and one of the most incredible mummified ice age animals ever discovered in the world,” said Yukon palaeontologist Grant Zazula.
It is the best-preserved woolly mammoth discovered in North America. The partial remains of a mammoth calf, named Effie, were found in 1948 at a gold mine in neighbouring Alaska.

A Rhode Island police officer accused of punching a woman at an abortion protest while he was off-duty was suspended from his job with pay Saturday while the Providence Police Department conducts a criminal investigation into his actions.
Jennifer Rourke, Rhode Island Political Cooperative Chairwoman and a state Senate candidate, told the Providence Journal she was punched in the face at least twice by Jeann Lugo, who had been running for the GOP nomination for a Rhode Island state senate seat.

On Friday’s episode of MSNBC‘s “Rachel Maddow Show,” Maddow warned against the ramifications of a “fetal personhood” case reaching the Supreme Court, legally defining a fetus as a human being, and an abortion as murder.
Speaking on the topic shortly after the Supreme Court’s 6-3 vote in the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which upheld a Mississippi law banning abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy; a ruling in which five of the six conservative justices concluded that decision required overturning Roe, although Chief Justice John Roberts wrote a concurring opinion in which he disagreed, Maddow put into perspective just what that could lead to.
“There’s nothing in the reasoning of Friday’s opinion from these six justices that would stop them from accepting something like a fetal personhood case,” Maddow said on-air. “A fetal personhood case would give this court a path to not just let individual states ban abortion, which is what they did today … A fetal personhood case could be their vehicle to impose a nationwide ban on abortion, on the order of the United States Supreme Court.”
Former Vice President Mike Pence has already called for such a national ban, giving a statement to Breitbart News on Friday saying “Having been given this second chance for life, we must not rest and must not relent until the sanctity of life is restored to the center of American law in every state in the land.”
“The anti-abortion political project of the Republican Party and the political right has been the central organizing principle for the right’s entire effort around the judiciary, one for which there is still no match or mirror on the left. It’s a big deal,” Maddow said on her show Friday. “The conservatives have the power on this court, and they will now wield it however they want, to achieve whatever outcomes they want, to change the country however they want without restriction — and you must do what they say . . . For them, the dam has burst.”
A Semora, North Carolina man, Andrew Dease, had two charges of felony animal cruelty dismissed on Tuesday in Halifax County General District Court.
The animal cruelty charges stemmed from Dease having dragged his two hunting dogs to their deaths on March 28.
However, after hearing evidence, Judge Darrell Puckett found that the defendant’s actions were accidental, not purposeful, and that the defendant had no intent to harm the animals.
The judge acknowledged the death of the dogs was tragic, and he noted that the defendant himself was emotional about their loss, according to Commonwealth’s Attorney Tracy Q. Martin.

Law enforcement agencies across the nation are bracing for an explosion of unrest from pro-choice groups Friday after the Supreme Court’s seismic decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
Outraged by the decision, militant pro-abortion groups like Jane’s Revenge and others have urged sympathizers to unleash a “Summer of Rage” across the country.
“Now the leash is off,” the group said in a June 14 communique in anticipation of the court’s action. “And we will make it as hard as possible for your campaign of oppression to continue. We have demonstrated in the past month how easy and fun it is to attack.”
The threats, issued online and through pamphlet and flyer campaigns, drew attention from the White House this week.
Asked specifically about threats from Jane’s Revenge, press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre acknowledged the potential for nationwide tumult.
“Violence and destruction of property have no place in our country under any circumstances and the president denounces this action,” she told reporters. “Actions like this are completely unacceptable regardless of our politics and we continue to denounce any violence or threats.”

The Department of Homeland Security intelligence branch is warning law enforcement, first responders and private sector partners nationwide Friday of potential domestic violence extremist activity in response to the Supreme Court’s decision on abortion, according to a memo obtained by CNN.
The memo from the DHS Office of Intelligence and Analysis says federal and state government officials, including judges, “probably are most at risk for violence in response to the decision.”
It also includes warnings about “First Amendment protected events,” reproductive and “family advocacy health care facilities,” and faith-based organizations being targets for violence or criminal incidents.
“Americans’ freedom of speech and right to peacefully protest are fundamental Constitutional rights. Those rights do not extend to violence and other illegal activity. DHS will continue working with our partners across every level of government to share timely information and to support law enforcement efforts to keep our communities safe,” a Homeland Security spokesperson told CNN in a statement.
DHS previously released a National Terrorism Advisory System bulletin warning of potential violence surrounding the Supreme Court ruling on abortion rights.
The memo notes that potential violence is expected “for weeks” following Friday’s decision given that domestic violent extremists “may be mobilized to respond to changes in state laws and ballot measures” related to abortion. The assessment, DHS said in the memo, is based on an increase in violent incidents after a draft was leaked last month.
Some of those earlier incidents are cited throughout the memo, including arson attacks targeting pregnancy resource centers and incidents of vandalism threatening violence targeting “religious facilities perceived as being opposed to abortion.”
The DHS intelligence arm relied on a variety of sources, including news media accounts, open source reporting and Justice Department press releases, for its assessment.
