“There he was maskless with all the other maskless people sitting in the stands, but if he stepped on the court, he would somehow be a threat to humanity,” said Maher.

March 19, 2022

OLYMPIA, Wash.- The Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission voted 5-4 today
against a proposed 2022 spring bear-hunting season. The vote by the
commission, which oversees the state’s Department of Fish and Wildlife, is
the second related to this year’s season. It follows an attempt by hunting
groups to reverse the original November 2021 suspension of the hunt.

“This vote is a big win for both science and black bears, and it will
protect bear cubs from being orphaned by a reckless spring hunt,” said
Sophia Ressler, a staff attorney at the Center for Biological Diversity.
“The commission once again told state wildlife officials that they won’t
authorize a hunt without a proper analysis of the threats to Washington’s
bears. We hope the wildlife agency actually listens this time.”

A tie vote in November failed to approve the rule needed to create a 2022
spring bear hunting season…

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – MARCH 19, 2022

Commission halts unethical and unscientific spring black bear hunt from proceeding after hunting groups petitioned to reinstate itOlympia, Wash.— The Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission voted 5-4 today to oppose a permanent spring black bear hunting season. The decision follows on the heels of a 4-4 split decision in November to cancel permits for the 2022 spring bear hunt. “This vote is a huge win for Washington’s black bears and for democratic process,” said Michelle Lute, PhD in wildlife management and national carnivore conservation manager for Project Coyote. “Washingtonians consistently showed up to voice their strong opposition to an ethically indefensible spring bear hunt that is also not supported by science. Today they were heard.” Following the November decision, a group of hunting groups petitioned the Commission to reinstate the spring 2022 hunting season and enact a permanent spring bear hunt. On March…

Washington Fish & Wildlife Commission Rejects Rule to Set Permanent Spring Bear Hunt

Commissioners cite scientific deficiencies and the need for a values-based discussion

Seattle, WA– Washington Wildlife First is pleased by the Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission’s 5-4 vote on Saturday to reject a proposed rule that would have instituted a permanent spring bear hunt in Washington.

The vote is the culmination of a process that began last fall, which has included many hours of Commission debate and generated widespread public interest, including hundreds of people who signed up to testify about the rule, and tens of thousands who submitted written comment. Management of the Department of Fish and Wildlife had recommended approval of the rule.

“We are grateful for the Commission’s thoughtful consideration of this issue,” said Samantha Bruegger, executive director…

Wildlife Commission Action Kit
November 2021
On November 19, 2021, the Fish & Wildlife Commission voted 4-4 not to approve the rule that would
have established a 2022 spring bear hunt. Thousands of people had weighed in during the rulemaking
process to oppose the trophy hunt, and more than a hundred people showed up to the rulemaking
hearing to give testimony. Commissioners who voted against the hunt emphasized that Department
managers failed to substantiate the purported “management need” for the hunt; and that
management’s rationale contradicted the Department’s own published science, annual game reports,
and game management plan.
December 2021
Following the vote, a number of trophy hunting organizations launched a vicious campaign against the
Commissioners who opposed the hunt, specifically targeting recent appointees Fred Koontz and
Lorna Smith. Those attacks demanded that Koontz and Smith be thrown off the Commission, called
for them to be “hung,” and claimed…

By Randy Santucci and Dan Davila

The Pennsylvania Game Commission arbitrarily changed the opening day of deer season, destroying a highly successful Thanksgiving weekend structure that endured for 60 years.

Moving the opening day from Monday to the Saturday after Thanksgiving revealed a gross lack of knowledge and enormous disregard of the economic benefits linked to hunters.

One of the top sales weekends for many rural businesses was taken away. No regulatory impact study was done to assess the impact from this radical change, and tens of millions of dollars of localized business sales, and state tax revenue evaporated.

The arrogance of the PGC Board of Commissioners was further revealed, when they ignored even the fact the Saturday opener would be in direct conflict with Small Business Saturday, steering a half million hunters into the woods that…

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — An attempt to open up Sunday hunting in Maine has been shot down in committee.

Hunting big game animals such as bears and moose is a popular activity in Maine, but the state is home to a law that bars hunting on Sunday. The Maine Legislature’s Committee on Inland Fisheries and Wildlife voted against a proposal to end the ban on Monday.

There have been many attempts to repeal or alter the ban over the years and none have succeeded. The latest proposal, from Democratic Sen. Jim Dill of Old Town, would have allowed Sunday hunting in parts of northern Maine. It also would’ve allowed Sunday hunting in parts of southern Maine with permission from landowners.

Pennsylvania authorities announced this week that no charges will be filed in the death of a Black man who was fatally shot nine times during a hunting trip.

In a statement to The Daily Beast, an attorney for Peter Spencer’s family said that they disagree with the Venango County district attorney’s decision—but are “not surprised” by the outcome.

“This is the type of behavior we have seen from the [Pennsylvania] state police and Venango County district attorney from the outset,” attorney Paul Jubas wrote.

He added that the family will hold a press conference about the decision next week.

Spencer, a Black Jamaican immigrant, was shot and killed Dec. 12 after his pregnant fiancée dropped him off in a remote area of Rockland County for a hunting trip with a friend and former co-worker, who is…
