Former President Trump tore into President Biden during a rally in South Carolina on Saturday for his approach to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The former president pointed the finger at Biden for the Russian invasion, saying Russian President Vladimir Putin would have never started a war with Trump in office.

He told supporters at the rally that the U.S. needs to stay out of war and that Biden still has a chance to keep Americans out of the conflict.

“Despite all of Biden’s weakness, cowardice and incompetence, there is still a path for him to end this tragedy without getting Americans snared into a gruesome and very bloody war,” Trump said.

He predicted that if the invasion continues, it will lead to another world war.

“This could lead, by the way, this could lead to World War III,” Trump said. “I see what’s happening. Because if you think Putin is going to stop, it’s going to get worse and worse. He’s not going to accept it, and we don’t have anybody to talk to him.”

In response to the invasion, Biden has levied harsh sanctions against Russia and this week announced a ban  on Russian oil, natural gas and coal imports.

Trump said the U.S. will not be able to end its dependence on Russian oil until it commits to “end Biden’s ridiculous war on American energy,” sounding a familiar note, as Republicans have for months sought to blame the president and Democrats for rising gas prices by tying them to what they argue is a lack of energy independence under the Biden administration. Analysts, however, have attributed the high prices seen in recent months to supply and demand mismatches related to the coronavirus pandemic.

“We have to get our great energy works drilling, pumping, producing, mining and refining like never before,” Trump said.

He also went after Biden for last year waiving sanctions on the Russian firm behind the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, a move that at the time drew pushback from Democrats and Republicans alike, who said the administration should take a harder stance on Russia. Biden last month announced sanctions against the company amid the building conflict in Ukraine.

Trump further criticized the Biden administration for its willingness to engage with countries such as Venezuela, Iran and Saudi Arabia to potentially make up for the void left by Russian oil imports.

“And now Biden is crawling around the globe on his knees begging and pleading for mercy from Saudi Arabia, Iran and Venezuela,” Trump said.

Trump said Biden was “groveling at the feet of the oil-rich and brutal Maduro regime,” referring to Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

Lawmakers have also criticized the administration for engaging with the countries over oil, saying the White House should not switch from dealing with one dictatorship to another to stabilize global energy markets.

Trump has previously called the Russian invasion of Ukraine “a holocaust,” though he praised Putin for his strategy in the days leading up to the conflict.

War has brought the world to the brink of a food crisis

London (CNN Business)Svein Tore Holsether says the world is careening toward a food crisis that could affect millions of people.

Record high natural gas prices have forced the company he runs, fertilizer producer Yara International, to curtail its production of ammonia and urea in Europe to 45% of capacity. With less of those two essential agricultural ingredients, he expects knock-on effects forglobal food supplies.

“It’s not whether we are going to have a food crisis. It’s how large that crisis will be,” Holsether told CNN Business.

Two weeks after Russia invaded Ukraine, the prices of key agricultural products produced in the region have skyrocketed. Thebiggest problem is wheat, a pantry staple. Supplies from Russia and Ukraine, which together account for almost 30% of global wheat trade, are now at risk…

Iran has claimed responsibility for a missile barrage that struck near a sprawling U.S. consulate complex in the northern Iraqi city of Irbil, saying it was retaliation for an Israeli strike in Syria that killed two members of its Revolutionary Guard.

BAGHDAD (AP) — Iran claimed responsibility Sunday for a missile barrage that struck near a sprawling U.S. consulate complex in northern Iraq, saying it was retaliation for an Israeli strike in Syria that killed two members of its Revolutionary Guard earlier this week.

No injuries were reported in Sunday’s attack on the city of Irbil, which marked a significant escalation between the U.S. and Iran. Hostility between the longtime foes has often played out in Iraq, whose government is allied with both countries.

The attack drew harsh condemnation from the Iraqi government, which called it a “violation of international law…

PARIS, March 11 (Reuters) – France is to slaughter several million poultry birds in the second mass cull of flocks this winter as the country tries to contain outbreaks of avian influenza, the agriculture ministry said on Friday.

After a wave of cases in the southwest led to the culling of around 4 million animals, the ministry said the disease has spread rapidly since last month in the Pays de la Loire region, another major poultry zone further up France’s west coast.Report ad

The authorities had slaughtered 1.2 million birds so far in the region and expect to cull another 3 million, as they adopt the same strategy as in the southwest by emptying poultry farms in areas near outbreaks, a ministry official said.

    3/11/2022

CHICAGO, March 11 (Reuters) – Iowa reported an outbreak of highly lethal bird flu in a commercial flock of egg-laying chickens on Friday, raising the risk for further infections in the top U.S. egg-producing state.

Iowa was already facing restrictions on exports of poultry products after a commercial turkey flock tested positive for the disease on Sunday.

In 2015, Iowa was at the center of the biggest-ever U.S. outbreak of avian flu, which killed about 50 million egg-laying chickens and turkeys. (Reporting by Tom Polansek; editing by Jonathan Oatis)

Bucharest, Romania (CNN)As Vice President Kamala Harris wasjetting to Poland this week, she got a mid-flight call from the White House.

It was President Joe Biden, looking to make sure his No. 2 was up to speed on the administration’s scramble to deal with a problem awaiting her in Warsaw, a senior administration official said. The Polish government was offering to send fighter jets through the US to Ukraine, an idea the administration had no choice but to firmly decline in a Pentagon statementthe day before Harris’ departure.Ordinarily such a scenario might prompt a cursory phone call between leaders to clear the air.

But in this case, the administration’s response was still unfolding as Harris was flying across the Atlantic to meet Poland’s President and prime minister, raising the stakes for a trip…

At just three meters wide, 2022 EB5 was around just half the size of an average male giraffe, which grows to be around five-six meters in height. As such, it was unlikely to do any damage if it had impacted the planet.

Pentagon says airstrike indicates Russian forces ‘broadening their target sets’

Commentator on Russian state TV criticizes Putin’s invasion

“Look, this is the third now military facility or airfield that the Russians had struck in western Ukraine in just the last couple of days,” Kirby told ABC “This Week” co-anchor Martha Raddatz, on Sunday. “So, clearly, at least from an airstrike perspective, they’re broadening their target sets.”

The Yavoriv International Center for Peacekeeping and Security, located about 10 miles from Poland and an hour west of Lviv, sustained damage from the airstrike. Lviv Gov. Maksym Kozytskiy said at least 35 people were killed and another 134 injured during the attack on the Ukrainian military training base. Kirby confirmed no Americans were present.

Raddatz followed up, citing Ukraine’s defense minister calling the strike “a terror attack near the NATO border” and “saying action must be taken to stop this, close the sky.”

“Could a no-fly zone have stopped this?” she asked.

“No, I don’t think so,” Kirby responded. “Look, I mean, no-fly zone has a nice air policing kind of sound to it. But I participated in one as a young officer on an aircraft carrier way back in the early ’90s. It is combat. You have to be willing to shoot and to be shot at.” He added that U.S. troops in Ukraine “leads to war with Russia.”MORE: Pentagon again rejects Poland’s plan to make US provide Ukraine fighter jets

Raddatz asked, “If those attacks on military supply centers cross into Poland — and I know that is a fear of the United States and the NATO allies — what changes? Kamala Harris just reaffirmed the pledge — the Article 5 pledge — to defend NATO members. If they strike in Poland, what happens?”

“We take our Article 5 commitment very seriously and the vice president was pretty firm about that on her recent visit, so has been [Defense] Secretary [Lloyd] Austin,” Kirby answered. “An armed attack against one is considered an armed attack against all. That is why, Martha, we continue to flow and to move and to reposition forces and capabilities along NATO’s eastern flank to make sure that we can defend every inch of NATO territory if we need to.”

“Now, there’s no reason we should need to because there’s no reason that there should be war in Ukraine as it is, and we’ve made it very clear to Russia that NATO territory will be defended not just by the United States, but by our allies,” Kirby later added.

“But this was just 10 miles from that border,” Raddatz pressed again, saying, “I just crossed that border the other day. Doesn’t this change the way you look at things? They’re getting closer and closer to our NATO allies.”

“I can tell you that we have been consistently concerned about NATO’s eastern flank and that airspace and, of course, that ground space on that flank of NATO. And we continue to look for ways to bolster the defenses of our NATO allies,” Kirby said.

The U.N. Security Council scheduled a meeting Friday at Russia’s request to discuss the unfounded Russian claim that the U.S. is working with Ukraine on developing biochemical weapons, an allegation the Biden administration has vehemently denied.MORE: Russia escalates false chemical weapons claims about US, Ukraine by bringing them to UN

“It is of the Russian playbook that that which they accuse you of they’re planning to do now,” Kirby said. “Now, again, we haven’t seen anything into it indicates some sort of imminent chemical or biological attack right now, but we’re watching this very, very closely.”

On Friday, President Joe Biden said Russia “would pay a severe price” if any biochemical weapons are utilized during the unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.MORE: Biden warns Russia will pay ‘severe price’ if it deploys chemical weapons

But as Ukrainian leaders plead for a no-fly zone over their country, Markian Lubkivskyi, an adviser to the Ukrainian defense minister, said during an earlier “This Week” interview that Ukraine was “still waiting for the weapons, for the aircraft, for the anti-air systems to protect Ukrainians from the air.”

Kirby, however, said assistance would “continue to flow” to the country.

“The kinds of things we know they most need, the kinds of things that they’re using so well, we’re going to continue to help get them into their hands. And we know that it is working, that they are receiving them and they are using them.”

“I mean they have impressed everybody around the world and certainly they have impressed the Russians who have been increasingly flummoxed and frustrated about their lack of progress because of this Ukrainian resistance,” he added.

Shortly after Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014, Ukraine built a concrete dam cutting off 85 percent of the peninsula’s water supply. So one of Moscow’s first strategic moves after invading the country was to blow it up.

©The Associated PressHow a Ukrainian dam played a key role in tensions with Russia

Ukraine had constructed the dam on the North Crimea Canal, a Soviet-era conduit that conveyed water from the Dnieper River to both Crimea and the Kherson region of Ukraine.

Russia has been diverting other water sources to the region since 2017, but those efforts could not compensate for the loss of canal flow, and the peninsula’s agriculture sector had essentially run dry.
