I don’t know if it is too late for humanity to avert a climate catastrophe, but I am sure there is no chance if we continue to treat global heating and the destruction of nature as separate problems.

The European Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen, speaking in Brussels this Thursday

That is the wrongheaded approach of the United Nations, which is about to stage one big global conference for the climate in Glasgow, having just finished a different big global conference for biodiversity in Kunming.

This division is as much of a mistake as the error made by universities when they teach chemistry in a different class from biology and physics. It is impossible to understand these subjects in isolation because they are interconnected. The same is true of living organisms that greatly influence the global environment. The composition of the Earth’s atmosphere and the temperature of the surface is actively maintained and regulated by the biosphere, by life, by what the ancient Greeks used to call Gaia.Advertisementhttps://2b4f1362857ca54edba03a00a60b6d41.safeframe.googlesyndication.com/safeframe/1-0-38/html/container.html

Almost 60 years ago, I suggested our planet self-regulated like a living organism. I called this the Gaia theory, and was later joined by biologist Lynn Margulis, who also espoused this idea. Both of us were roundly criticised by scientists in academia. I was an outsider, an independent scientist, and the mainstream view then was the neo-Darwinist one that life adapts to the environment, not that the relationship also works in the other direction, as we argued. In the years since, we have seen just how much life – especially human life – can affect the environment. Two genocidal acts – suffocation by greenhouse gases and the clearance of the rainforests – have caused changes on a scale not seen in millions of years.

Because subjects like astronomy, geology, and meteorology are taught separately in schools and universities, few people are aware of the natural forces affecting the Earth’s surface temperature.

For billions of years the Earth’s surface temperature has been determined mainly by the radiant heat coming from the sun. This energy increased over time because it is the nature of stars like the sun to increase their heat output as they grow older. But temperatures on Earth remained relatively stable thanks to Gaia: forests, oceans and other elements in the the Earth’s regulating system, which kept the surface temperature fairly constant and near optimal for life.

The global warming that concerns all of us, and which will be discussed this week in Glasgow, includes a great deal of extra heating that comes as a consequence of extracting and burning fossil fuels since about the middle of the 19th century. That releases methane, carbon dioxide and other gases into the atmosphere. They absorb radiant heat and stop it escaping from Earth. This is what causes global warming.

The amount of global warming depends hugely on the properties of water. When cold ice forms, much of it is white snow. This reflects the sunlight back to space and is cooling. But when it is warm, the water vapour in the air is a powerful greenhouse gas that makes it warmer still.

Much of the confusion over global heating comes about because of the huge quantities of heat needed to change the state of water. Few are aware that to melt a gram of ice takes 80 calories, enough heat to raise the temperature of 1ml of water to 80C. Try an ice cube in your boiling hot tea.

Then imagine how much heat was needed to melt large areas of the polar ice cap during the recent summer and how much hotter the world would have been if the ice had not been there. No wonder there is confusion about whether there is global heating or not.

Warnings that once seemed like the doom scenarios of science fiction are now coming to pass. We are entering into a heat age in which the temperature and sea levels will be rising decade by decade until the world becomes unrecognisable. We could also be in for more surprises. Nature is non-linear and unpredictable, never more than at a time of transition.

Lowering these risks and adapting to those we can no longer avoid will require a mobilisation of resources on the scale of a war economy. We have no choice but to reduce the burning of fossil fuels or face even worse consequences.

But we should also not become over-reliant on renewable power, which will leave us with an energy gap. We need to build more nuclear power stations to overcome that, though the greens will first have to get over their overblown fears of radiation.

The dangers are nowhere near as bad as they are often painted. I’ve travelled millions of miles by air, and all that time I have been exposed to levels of radiation that are ten times as great as at ground level. The dangers are exaggerated.

We also need to address the problem of overpopulation and to urgently halt the destruction of tropical forests. Most of all, we need to look at the world in a holistic way.

I am not hopeful of a positive outcome at Cop26, knowing who is participating. I was not invited to Glasgow, though that is hardly a surprise. As well as being 102 years old, I am an independent scientist, and the university academics have never been comfortable with that.

But my fellow humans must learn to live in partnership with the Earth, otherwise the rest of creation will, as part of Gaia, unconsciously move the Earth to a new state in which humans may no longer be welcome. The virus, Covid-19, may well have been one negative feedback. Gaia will try harder next time with something even nastier.

Media caption,Sir David Attenborough to COP26 delegates: “The world is looking to you”

British naturalist Sir David Attenborough has urged COP26 climate summit delegates to “turn tragedy into triumph” and tackle climate change.

In an impassioned speech which drew a standing ovation, he said the fate of future generations must give delegates the impetus “to rewrite our story”.

The 95-year-old warned that humanity was “already in trouble” because of rising carbon levels in the atmosphere.

More than 120 world leaders are in Glasgow for the two week summit.

The COP26 conference is seen as crucial to limit global temperature increases, and changes to the climate.

The world is now about 1.2C warmer than it was in the 19th Century – and extreme weather events like heatwaves, floods and forest fires are already becoming more intense.https://buy.tinypass.com/checkout/template/cacheableShow?aid=tYOkq7qlAI&templateId=OTBYI8Q89QWC&templateVariantId=OTV0YFYSXVQWV&offerId=fakeOfferId&experienceId=EXAWX60BX4NU&iframeId=offer_0e763acc7b457c03340a-0&displayMode=inline&widget=template&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bbc.com

A private plane took off on Oct. 26 from the Russian city of Chelyabinsk having filed a flight plan to its final destination, the Tanzanian city of Moshi, in Northern Tanzania, on the African east coast. The unusual passengers onboard this prestigious KlasJet private aircraft are a lion and a leopard who are being repatriated to more familiar territories following a long and complex rehabilitation process.

Both of the animals, Simba the Lion cub, and Eva the Leopard will be flown from the city of Chelyabinsk, where they have been carefully rehabilitated by Russian veterinarian Karen Dallakyan, to their new home in the care of the animal welfare foundation, Kilimanjaro Animal CREW – the Tanzanian Centre for Rescue, Education, and Wildlife – located near Moshi on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro.

In another unique operation for KlasJet, a family member of Avia Solutions Group (ASG), the whole project will come as the culmination of a long and complex process involving stringent logistical planning, the sourcing and provision of complicated permits and permissions, and the cooperation of multiple agencies and organizations. The whole process would also have been impossible without the assistance of the Transport Competence Agency in Lithuania who gave unlimited time and assistance for the successful outcome of the project.

Simba the lion cub’s rescue mission in March 2020 was led by Yulia Agaeva, the founder of SO.TRAVEL and Friends Of My Heart community of animal rights activists, who also was an integral part of this repatriation project. The little lion was saved from abuse at the hands of a beach photographer who used the cub for portraits with holidaymakers. In an act of gross brutality, the cub’s legs had been broken to prevent the animal from escaping. Thankfully, after the rescue, the lion cub was put into the care of Dr. Dallakyan and was taken to a shelter for wild animals, “Save Me,” where the rehabilitation process began.

In contrast to Simba, Eva the Leopard had an easier upbringing having been rejected by its mother at birth and not suffered at the hands of man, Dr. Dallakyan once again stepped in to ensure the animal would be treated humanely and taken care of until such a time that she could be repatriated.

In usual circumstances, animals are transported by cargo aircraft. However, in this situation and to ensure that the animals’ handlers, vets, and the entire repatriation team could travel together, the KlasJet private passenger jet was reconfigured to accommodate their cages by removing a section of the seating normally reserved for humans.

While at a glance reconfiguration can look like a simple change, in reality, this was a long and intricate process that required meticulous planning. A project for the aircraft modification was prepared. A step-by-step guide detailed the preparation process from what materials will be used for cages, how they’ll be assembled and fastened to the aircraft, to special seating plans that clarified what seating will be removed and how the rest of the seats will be allocated to the passengers to ensure distance and safety requirements according to the aircraft performance limitations. These plans explained in thorough detail the whole process of working with animals, loading and unloading the cats, changed procedures in case of emergency. Only with careful and thorough preparation, the success of a project of such magnitude was possible.

According to Rita Domkute, KlasJet CEO, “At KlasJet, complex and unique requests are nothing new to us, finding solutions for those requests is what makes us stand out from our competitors. Over the years we have carried individual sports stars and entire teams while managing to cater for their specialized diets with individually created menus. We have catered for entertainers, celebrities, high-net-worth individuals, business leaders, and heads of state, so, having the King of the Jungle onboard is just more opportunity to demonstrate our flexibility and attention to detail.”

Giving further examples of KlasJet’s flexibility, the CEO went on to say, “As part of our response to the most unique private jet requests, we have transported precious goods and antiquities which involved meticulous planning and had to adhere to all additional safeguarding procedures. We have also trained our staff and crew to cater for both the religious and cultural differences we may encounter to provide the highest level of service and excellence. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we have operated safely and successfully, even while repatriating infected passengers. Additionally, we have been called upon in a range of other medical emergencies, natural disasters, and in the provision of assistance to NGOs and other organizations.”

Regarding the difficulties involved in the task of repatriating the animals to Tanzania, the CEO said, “The whole operation was a long and complex one, with many hurdles to be crossed and obstacles to be overcome. The logistics involved, and the reconfiguration of the aircraft required the attention of specialists. Additionally, even the best-planned flights can sometimes face unforeseen situations and delays due to external factors. In such situations professionalism, quick thinking and creativity enable us to make effective decisions to divert the situation back on track. For example, for this flight, the unrest in Sudan and Covid-19 border restrictions have prompted us to make alterations to our route. Thankfully, at KlasJet we have a team of hugely experienced aviation professionals who know and understand the compliance with and implementation of all legal requirements in an operation such as this.”

Rita Domkute also added, “Projects of such magnitude and difficulty can seem impossible at first, yet where there’s a will there’s a way. Our team is always eager to undertake social projects and to use their experience, knowledge and determination to make the impossible a reality. Our team at KlasJet follows one golden rule: if at least one member of our team believe in a project and trusts it is possible, we are going all the way and will do our best to make it happen. And I am very proud to be a part of such a team.”

Ricky Gervais says he wants to ‘f***ing batter’ poachers after seeing photos of a dehorned rhino.

The comedian, who is an outspoken advocate for animal rights, took to Twitter today (1 November) to share an article about a mutilated Southern White Rhino.

The horrific photos of the injured rhino were taken in North West Province in South Africa five years ago and show the animal weeping.

Sharing the story, Ricky wrote: “Devastating. I go from wanting to cry, to wanting to f***ing batter the c***s who did this.”

Since posting the tweet, it has been liked more than 18,000 times, with thousands of people piling into the comments to offer their support.

One user said: “That’s exactly the way I feel Ricky when I see this or any cruelty to animals… sometimes I really don’t know how I’ve managed not to SCREAM at some of the people I’ve had to deal with.”

The harrowing images were captured by British director and photographer Simon Needham, who witnessed the rhino being saved by wildlife charity Saving the Survivors.

Commenting on Ricky’s post, the organisation said: “Thank you for your passion @rickygervais and for sharing this story of our work. Sadly Seha is just one of the many Rhinos we have treated, however, many like Seha are saved from their injuries by our Vets. Thank you for your support!”

They also revealed that Seha has since had a son and is doing very well.

Talking about the photographs, Simon, who has worked with a number of similar charities in the past, said: “When I heard about @savingthesurvivors within the community and after hearing what they do I offered my time to photograph the rhino to help promote their need to raise money.”

“Saving the Survivors are a team of wildlife vets whose mission is to save every animal who has fallen victim to poaching or traumatic incidents.

“Poachers butchered the rhino’s horns and removed parts of the bone in his skull as well,” Simon says.

“The owners of the game reserve left him for dead for two weeks as he wasn’t worth a bullet to put him down, not without his horns.

“The police noticed him and called Saving the Survivors to help him.”

South Africa, which is home to the majority of the world’s rhino population, has been hit by a poaching epidemic over recent years, with more than 1,000 rhinos killed each year between 2013 and 2017.Related video:https://www.ladbible.com/jw-iframe.html?videoId=null&autoplay=false&isNielsenEnabled=false&title=Ricky%20Gervais%20Wants%20To%20Fg%20Batter%20Rhino%20Poachers%20&description=The%20comedian%20said%20he%20was%20disgusted%20by%20the%20images%20of%20the%20mutilated%20animal%20&platform=Web

Last year, there were 394 incidents recorded in the country and on average, a rhino is killed for its horn every 22 hours.

The latest numbers show that rhino populations, particularly in key strongholds such as Kruger National Park, in South Africa, have fallen dramatically.

Rhino populations have had no time to recover from ruthless poaching that’s taken place throughout the last decade

“It’s devastating to see animals abused this way by humans for profit,” said Simon.

“I just wanted to capture some clear, honest and factual shots of the tragedy going on in Africa in regards to poaching

“It’s sad people can’t believe we still do this to animals in this day and age. Until humans stop wanting rhino horn this will go on and on.

“The world’s wildlife population is under heavy attack from the human population and the plight of these intelligent, emotional, sentient beings needs to be highlighted and the wildlife protected.”
