It’s the opening of the regular firearms deer season in our area on Saturday and, like most recent years, the Department of Natural Resources is putting out its annual safety message. I know some folks like to pooh-pooh such things. It’s become fashionable to dismiss those “nanny state” messages as just another example of government overreach.
But here’s the thing. All that nanny overreaching has made a huge difference when it comes to your odds of being shot while out in the woods this deer season.
In years past, heading out in the woods on the deer opener was akin to entering a war zone and it took a serious toll on hunters. I never realized just how much of a toll until I was paging through one of my mother’s scrap books and found a small clipping from the 1930s, naming one…

If I could find a way to zap a pheasant in the air without killing it, to have a second or two to hold it and look over its feathers and admire their sheen and the length of the tail growing late into the season before it wakes up and takes flight out of my hand, I probably would. However, the hard work of my dog, the limits of our technology afield, and the nature of the hunt itself produce a sense of obligation to pull the trigger, which results in a finality that is both sweet in the form of success and sorrowful in the taking of something so beautiful. That and stunning an animal in such a manner likely crosses a line into wildlife harassment, which as I mull this ethical scenario over on long walks in the field and…

EDDY COUNTY, N.D. (KMOT) – Two North Dakota men are facing criminal charges after a hunting dispute in October.

A game warden said he was called to a section of land in Eddy County on Oct. 21 where 69-year-old Jeffrey Erman, of Bismarck, was involved in an argument with 23-year-old Dustin Wolf, of West Fargo, and group of other West Fargo men.

One of the men, Jacob Sweere, recorded the incident and posted a video on YouTube. The video had 1.8 million views as of Thursday.

In the video, viewers can see Erman driving up to the hunters set up on the boundary line of the field, yelling profanities, and telling them he would call off his “friend” the game warden if they paid him $300.

An affidavit indicates that Wolf told game wardenshe had permission…

Some People Should Take Preventive Measures to Protect Against Bird Flu Viruses

Español|Other Languages|Print

November 3, 2022—As bird flu outbreaks in wild birds and poultry continue across the U.S., the country approaches a record number of birds affected compared to previous bird flu outbreaks. Since early 2022, more than 49 million birds in 46 states have either died as a result of bird flu virus infection or have been culled (killed) due to exposure to infected birds. This number is nearing the 50.5 million birds in 21 states that were affected by the largest bird flu outbreak that occurred in 2015. Even so, the number of states affected in 2022 is already more than double the number of states that were affected in 2015. Although the overall risk to the general public from the current bird flu outbreaks remains low, it is important that people…

Rich countries must sign a “historic pact” with the poor on the climate, or “we will be doomed”, the UN secretary-general, António Guterres, has warned, as a deepening gulf between the developed and developing world has put climate talks on the brink.

The stark warning comes as world leaders start to gather for theUN Cop27 climate summit, which opens on Sunday in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, but which even the hosts admitwill be the most difficult in at least a decade.

Cop27 is taking place amid the worst geopolitical tensions for years…

RENO — A 48-year-old Winnemucca man died Tuesday after being accidentally shot by his friend on a hunting trip.

Elko County Sheriff’s Deputies were contacted Tuesday morning with a report of a hunter who had sustained a gunshot wound to the chest in the North Pequop Mountains. Deputies, along with Reach Air Medical Services, arrived on scene but declared the victim deceased just after 9 a.m. that morning.

A preliminary investigation by Elko County Sheriff’s Deputies and game wardens with the Nevada Department of Wildlife determined that a friend of the victim was attempting to place his weapon into a plastic gun case attached to a side-by-side ATV when the rifle accidentally fired, hitting the victim in the chest.

Game wardens report that often tragedies such as this occur while entering or exiting a vehicle…

A man in Connecticut was caught illegally baiting ducks around a hunting blind by spreading kernels of corn and then shooting them, doing so under the watchful eyes of the Connecticut Environmental Conservation Police, which had been tipped off by an anonymous complaint.

David Foster, 51, of Westbrook, and two other hunters shot and retrieved ducks over the area that had been baited by Foster. When confronted, Foster admitted he had spread corn over the hunting area to attract ducks, theU.S. Attorney’s Office of the District of Connecticut stated.

Foster violated the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, which bans people from hunting any migratory game bird by baiting, and was fined $4,000 by U.S. District Judge Kari A. Dooley.

In late September and early October 2020, the Environmental Conservation Police and U.S. Fish and Wildlife, acting on…

Environment correspondent

Europe’s growing reliance on liquefied natural gas (LNG) is coming at a high environmental cost, new research shows.

LNG imports have soared in the wake of the Ukraine war which has limited piped supplies from Russia.

Analysis, seen by the BBC, shows that the production and transport of LNG causes up to ten times the carbon emissions compared to pipeline gas.

There are worries that the extra carbon could hamper efforts to rein in warming.

World leaders will meet in Egypt next week for the COP27 climate conference, amid concern that the war in Ukraine has distracted efforts to cut…
